lol so I’ll be busy these next few weeks but here’s some derpy thumbs to show off my comic process for the curious OTL.Thumbs on the left, sketches on the right. I usually move right to inks after the sketches are straightened out.

As for content, it’s still very WIP. Babs has too much fun poking at Dick’s weak spots, he’s so easy to make fun of sometimes hahahha

ugggghh sketches are done;; not sure when I’ll start finishing these because my schedule is asdkljflskdf. With the whole fiasco with amnesia!DickRic, it seems the perfect time for a Dynamic Duo reprise without any DC fuckery.

EMEND: a PG-13 batfam comic aka relationship study between Bruce and Dick (and Damian). There is a soft Brudick vibe because I’m trash. If Timkon is my wholesome, high-school-sweethearts ship then Brudick is the dumpster fire complicated mess I like to poke at because I can. I’ll be tagging all the EMEND posts with the brudick tag so if it’s not your thing you can filter it out!

Also this is kind of a Superkiddos 1.5 because the story I planned out for Superkiddos 2 starts off with Colin already enrolled in Damian’s and Jon’s school. Now I have to go back to work nooo;;

Since starting working on my new comic for the last few months, I’ve been wondering how other comickers feel about the process of working on pages.

What’s the most rewarding/fun part of the process for you?
What’s the most challenging?

For me I find the thumbnailing stage to often be both these things. It’s an often difficult stage because planning panels is such a critical part, and I usually have an idea of my head of how certain panels should be (ie. large panel end of page) so I have to work around those panels. I thumbnail at about half-sized, and so sketch fairly detailed, which makes the inking phase much faster when I bring it into the computer (in my case, iPad). I also write the dialogue in so I can get a sense of pacing, etc. So, my thumbnails are more detailed than other artists’, which I think tend to be more small and loose to figure out layout/composition– but it works well for me.

Thumbnailing is really rewarding to me because I can feel the comic actually taking shape. And it makes me excited to complete pages so I can get to future ones I’m extra excited about.

I’d love to hear other people opinions about this! Feel free to share.

Dates 3: Inks!

Inks are the second-to-last checkin we schedule out for our artists, and just like pencils and thumbnails, everyone does them differently. Some folks make really heavy use of spot blacks (Sonia and Sparklenaut, the first and fourth images), and others mostly just outline shapes and plan on doing the bulk of their rendering with tones. Regardless, inks are when we see pages start to really firm up and settle into their final form, which is always super exciting for us as editors!

The pages above are from stories by (in order): @sonialiaoart,@ametalias,@fawnprinceling, and @sparklenautarts&@basaliskwrites

You can see some Dates 3 thumbnailsandpencils in our process tag, and dig into our contributor feature thread on twitter to find the final versions of some of these pages! And, since there are just 10 days left in the campaign:

Go back Dates: An Anthology of Queer Historical Fiction, Volume 3 on Kickstarter now!
