Quokkas are to kangaroo rats as Man-Bat is to Batman. Which is to say, quokkas are rat kangaroos. They’re ugly, scruffy little sons of bitches, but I’ll be damned if they haven’t got something. They’ve got it, you know? That special something extra, that x factor. They look like they crawled out of an Australian sewer the morning after a mad scientist improperly disposed of some radioactive wallaby juice, but they kind of make it work. And since they’re from some of those random Australian islands with practically no predators, they aren’t afraid of people! So they’ll come right on up to you and get in your lap and let you scratch their little ears and obviously that can only mean something terrible. No matter how adorably curious they may be, if you even TOUCH one of those fuckers the Australian government will find out about it and ticket you for $300. That is so unfair! The quokka came on to me, officer. Make the fucking rat kangaroo pay the damn fine.
I actually almost didn’t post this one because I thought it looked a little derpy, but then my husband pointed out that all quokkas look a little derpy which is why they’re so cute. I included a photo for reference!

“There are some very adorable animals in Australia aren’t there.” Asmodeus observed as he walked with you along the path between the photo shoot and the animal care facility they were working with. “I mean that Wombat Belphie was cuddling? Just adorable.”
“I agree. It’s sad that so many of them are in danger because of loss of habitat from those fires.” You sigh. “I’m really happy we get to help with this project. I’m sure it will be really successful with you involved.”
Some of the animals would take longer to accept being held or being near one of the demons simply because of their temperament. Luckily the Quokka was one of the easier ones to handle and Asmo would be able to have his photo shoot done by the end of the day.
“Oh darling of course it will. I mean especially with me in the calendar? How could they not sell out! And we’re doing this all on a pro bono basis? That means they are getting top notch modeling for free and I’m sure their support fund will fill up even faster than their calendars sell out. Although…” He looks a little sad for a moment.
“I’m just a little worried. I mean… the idea is we are promoting the animals that are in danger because of the fires, right?”
“Yes.”
“I’m just feeling like that won’t feel like the case. Which means we aren’t really doing our job right are we?”
“Why wouldn’t that be the case?” You ask suddenly growing concerned.
“Well, because as adorable as all these animals are? I still don’t think there is one cute enough to pose with me. Not without me completely outshining it. I mean I can try to tone down the charm a little but… I don’t want to disappoint my fans either. Especially if they buy a few dozen copies just because I’m in it.” He sighs looking really worried.
You tried to cover your smile. “You’re being especially sweet right now Asmo. You’re really worried about the animals, aren’t you?”
“Well of course I am! I mean we are doing this for them right? I mean I can’t imagine not being able to go home to my room and take a nice long bath and… their homes aren’t something they can go back to.” He was actually tearing up a little and you had to stop walking and hug him.
“Hey… what are you doing darling? I mean I know it’s been a few minutes since our last hug but don’t we need to get to work?” He asked blushing a little.
“You’re right we do. And I have a feeling that if we work really hard this project will do exactly what we hope it will. So please don’t feel like you need to hold back Asmo. I’m sure we’ll find the perfect Animal to pose with you and it will be everyone’s favorite page on the calendar.”
Asmodeus brightens. “You really think so?”
“Most definitely.” You nod enthusiastically. “Now come on. As you said we need to get to work.” You reach out and take his hand.
He blushes just a little before commenting, “Wow it’s really nice when you take charge like that.”
You laugh and you tug his hand encouraging him to follow you into the animal care center.
Only moments later Asmo was waving his hands at you in excitement.
“I found it! You were right darling! You were right! She’s so perfect! I’m so excited to pose with her! Come see! Come and see!”
He grabs your arm and tugs you over to the pen of one of the animals in the care center. Inside you see the handler holding a furry little creature who happens to be… smiling?
“She’s a Quokka! And isn’t she just perfect? Just absolutely beautiful! And with a smile like that? The two of us will be breathtaking in those photos.” Asmo sighs looking so relieved that you can’t resist hugging him.
“You’re right. She is perfect. I guess they want you to give her a nickname for the calendar, though. So keep that in mind as you go get to know her okay?”
You went to the head caretaker and got permission for Asmo to begin interacting with the Quokka so they could be ready for the photo shoot in a few hours.
Surprisingly enough the Quokka seemed to be as enamored with Asmodeus as he was with her. It was adorable seeing him feed her and pet her just the way the handler directed. In no time Asmo was holding the little creature in his arms and smiling at you through the window of the pen.
As the two of you walked back to the area set up for the photo shoot to see how the others were doing Asmodeus announced that he had the perfect name. “I wanted something from the human realm because -she- is from the human realm. And she’s just so beautiful I couldn’t give her just any name-even if it is just for the calendar. But I’ve decided on-are you ready?-Maybelline!”
“Maybelline?” You ask looking a bit surprised.
“You know! You’ve seen the commercials right?” He quotes the commercial word for word with perfect intonation as though he had written the lines himself. It was making you wonder if he had?
“My little Maybelline is so gorgeous that you wouldn’t know if she was born this way or if she has some astounding secret? One that makes her especially gorgeous. Don’t you love it darling? I just love it.” He continues to babble on excitedly about his little Maybelline and how they are going to rock this photo shoot.
The shoot went smoothly for the most part. Yes, Asmo and “Maybelline” did a wonderful job and the photographer was ecstatic. Unfortunately, it was rather difficult to get the stars to part with their stage or with each other. It seemed that once Asmodeus found a partner as equally beautiful as he was? There would never be enough photos of the two of them.

“Asmo… is something wrong?” You asked feeling a little worried. Asmodeus was always reminding you to soften your expression and put on a smile. Avoiding wrinkles was the best way to deal with them after all.
