Welcome to another @CultureStrike editorial cartoon!

Last Friday, in the even of Hurrican Harvey’s landfall, Trump went on television to announce his pardon of former “Sheriff” Arpaio. Trump explained that he had waited until the storm made landfall to make the announcement, as he was under the assumption that the ratings would be higher, as people were tuned in to keep up with news around the hurricane.

As if this wasn’t ridiculous enough, Border Patrol in Texas issued a statement saying that their checkpoints would remain open during the storm, so long as their officers were safe. As people were making their way from the coastal borderlands and away from the approaching storm, it became clear that Border Patrol was using this opportunity to detain any undocumented people or any migrant who didn’t have the appropriate documentation with them.

How deeply ingrained is this country’s xenophobia that the President of the United States could go on television to announce his pardoning of one of this country’s most infamous racist power-tripping law enforcement officer as a CATEGORY FOUR hurricane was about to make landfall? How terrified is this country of immigrants that we are okay with Border Patrol checkpoints slowing down the process of people arriving to safety from this year’s most destructive storm if it means that a few undocumented people are detained?

This weekend was bad news. Arpaio will not face justice for all the horror that he brought to Maricopa County. Houston cannot seemingly count on 45 for his input to relieve their situation. Border Patrol is cruel and useless. And though this time of year is technically normal and ripe for tropical storms for Texas, they will only get worse as climate change continues to worsen. And as the environment turns against us in these horrible taxing storms, it’s clear that our government has other priorities.

This doesn’t bode well for us.

Welcome to another @CultureStrike editorial cartoon!

This past Monday, a series of emails between staff at the Natural Resources Conservation Service were obtained by The Guardian that demonstrate how the Trump administration is dealing with climate change: they are simply changing the language (read more here: bit.ly/biancaeuphemisms).

Bianca Moebius-Clune, the director of soil health, wrote a list of words to avoid using, and offered a list of euphemism instead. “Climate change” became “weather extremes.” “Reduce greenhouse gases” became “build soil organic matter.” “Climate change adaptation” became “resilience to weather extremes.” The list extends to other terms, all reflecting the politics of the Trump’s administration to censor science.

Bianca wrote, “We won’t change the modeling, just how we talk about it… tamp down on discretionary messaging right now.”

The Trump administration is clearly putting politics above science, hoping that by changing the language, the impact of reality won’t be as severe, or that the problem will disappear. It won’t. Given his communications team’s approach to reporting the reality of the white house, changing the language does not alter reality. It just changes a truth into a lie.

But maybe Bianca and the Trump administration are onto something. It’s taken many years for “climate change” to become a part of our lingo, considering the calamities that are forthcoming if big changes aren’t made. But for many people, “climate change” doesn’t encapsulate the real dangers and urgency that it deserves in order to start shifting our culture to address this issue and save ourselves. The Trump administration is taking this issue to heart, but in a very destructive direction.

Maybe “climate change” can be a term that we can retire in the future in favor of a term that is more relevant, truthful, and immediate to our communities. One thing is for sure, though: climate change is real, regardless of what anybody decides to call it.

I often encounter climate change deniers in the work that I do, so I share these facts in the hopes that they will help you convince your skeptical friends that climate change is real. One of the best ways we can act on climate change is by bringing it up in conversations with friends and in school, to help people wrap their minds around this complex and continually growing issue.

In honour of Earth Day, here is a poem.

We were ment to be apart of this planet,

Not elevate ourselves to the position of gods.

We were supposed to go with nature, not against it.

We should have cherished this planet, our home,

But instead we destroyed it.

Now this planet is dieing

Just so people can make a profit

And the governments aren’t doing much about

Because they make money off of not doing anything

We were an accidental creation,

And now we hold the fate of this little blue planet within our hands.

Friday funday in delicious green! This weekend is all about our Mother Earth who we’ve been treating terribly. Let’s grow out of our angsty, disrespectful teenage years and become the grateful and responsible adult children she deserves. Plant a tree, plant bee friendly flowers, participate in your local march, write a letter, make a call, educate yourself about where your money goes, teach your children, show that you care. Science matters. Facts matter. We’ve only got one Earth.

Honoured to have been a part of the climate strike today, it was inspirational seeing kids mobilising to take action for our planet Governments have been silent on climate change for too long, favouring profits over the planet. Governments are happy to steal our future from us and the future of our planet. There’s nothing more imperative than halting climate change. The kids know this, when will the adults listen?

Hope (Polar Bear), 2019
Hope is the most important factor of motivation, if we still believe that we can turn things around, we act.
Never loose hope, even in the most desperate situations.
The earth and its inhabitants need you.
