Seulgi for once wasn’t feeling tired, which was saying something, but she wanted to go out and do something,  Wendy and Juhee, the two members she was closest to, both had other plans, and she almost resigned herself to going back to her room, but then she heard noise coming from one of the open doorways of the dorm.  She peeked in and saw Meiqi there, and she gave her a hopeful smile, knocking lightly on the door.

“Would you… like to go do something?  We could go get something to eat or go shopping or something?  I just… kind of want to get out of the dorm for a bit,” this came out a bit awkwardly, as she still wasn’t too close with the other members and she really wanted to be. She hoped her asking wasn’t too strange, even if they hadn’t really gone to do something like that before.

“i remind you of someone you used to know?” meiqi parrots, wondering if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. “are they as hopeless as i am?” she jokes, but she also dwells on the sentence a little longer, trying to figure out who it might be—a friend? a sibling?—, before a thought comes barrelling into her head. she gasps, covering her mouth with both hands. “wait, are they… dead?”

meiqi watches seulgi’s actions carefully, smiling halfheartedly in response. “i can’t imagine doing this hundreds of times. i’m bored of it after just, like, fifty times.” and then she flushes almost immediately. meiqi’s used to being complimented, but it’s so sudden and they’re sitting fairly close together and, just as she had voiced out only a minute earlier, seulgi’s smile is really cute. “i-i don’t think i have control over how expressive they are,” she admits with a laugh, pretending to dust off her very clean shoes. “but thank you. i hope they don’t give away the extent of my admiration for you, too!”

meiqi doesn’t particularly like berry good, either. she’s heard a few of their songs and the vibes did not fit her at all. she’s more of a brave girls fan, or even chi chi (not their cute concepts though). out of the more recent groups, she has to say that she prefers luxe and k.arma to eclipse’s day side. “i just want to do harder dances, you know? like madtown and myname.”

but she’s never thought about it that way, approaching the choreography with a different mindset. she doesn’t think it’ll help much, considering meiqi has never once been considered innocent in her life, but she appreciates the advice. “i’ll try that,” she decides hesitantly. “i’m not sure how innocent i’ll look, though. i’ve been pretty… what’s the opposite of innocent? sinful? i guess i’ve been pretty sinful my entire life.”

Seulgi nods slowly, her mind wandering to her former roommate and co-trainee back in Sphere years ago, but she chuckles softly.  “I bet you’re more cute than you think. They always were,” she says, leaning back on her hands a little bit as they take their break.  When the other asks the abrupt question about the person in question’s living status, she can’t help but laugh a little bit. “No, no. They’re not dead, just someone that is very special to me who I haven’t seen in a long time.  They hated cute dances, but they were actually way better at them than they thought they were.”

She shook her head, laughing more.  “I never did get the aversion to it.  It’s not even that bad.  I mean, the group a lot of our industry considers to be one of, if not the best, girl group of all time danced around with lolipops, this is way better than having to do that and even they sometimes look back on that fondly,” she says, smiling to herself.  “Just saying, it could be way worse if they wanted it to be.”  She smiles at the other’s words, and she shakes her head, amused “I’m sure now that we’re living together that I’ll do something dumb and you’ll lose that admiration and be like ‘why did I think that way about this dork’?”

She nods, fully understanding the concept, it’s one she’s heard a lot over the years, even if she can’t get behind it.  “If you’re having trouble with this one, doesn’t that mean it’s hard too, just in a different way?” she tilts her head a bit.  “I love those dances too, but I find it just as challenging to learn to do something like this song.  To me it’s just as fun.”

Seulgi’s eyebrows raise from this confession from her fellow member and chuckles. “Well, now knowing that, you’ll have to let me in on some of those stories sometime, then.  But hey, if I can do it, I’m sure you can.  It’s not like I’ve exactly always been a saint either, you know?”  Granted, maybe she wasn’t as wild as that made her sound, but she definitely had done things she hadn’t wanted her parents to know about.

rkmeiqi‌:

the initial friction between the two trainees (brought about because of meiqi, of course, and more one-sided in nature than anything) has dwindled down to almost non-existent. almost, because for the most part, meiqi is over it. she has other things to do, and sunmi has never had foul intentions. but there will always be a small part of her, tucked away into the crevices of her brain and only baring its teeth in times of inferiority.

kind of like right now, though this time, her negative energy isn’t directed towards the leader. it’s more like anger at the situation and their choreographer and their ceo and herself.

“how am i feeling?” meiqi huffs, repeating the question with more emphasis. “i’m being robbed!”

she’s only half joking. meiqi has no problem with the dance for either songs, other than the few tweaks she personally would have made (but that doesn’t matter). her issue lies elsewhere. “why don’t i get to be center with you during the dance break for deja vu?! i’m literally the leadfuckingdancer!

she eyes meiqi with vague interest although sunmi can’t say meiqi was wrong. not in the slightest. their lead dancer was being out-snubbed by their two main vocalists. which was a little unfair given that both girls are handed a majority of the lines in both their title song and b-side and were now given centre in choreography as well?

meiqiwas being robbed.

“i agree,” sunmi says, gently removing her arm from around their maknae’s shoulders and instead crossing them. “i’m not sure how all of this is decided but quite frankly it makes no sense.” the same way how sunmi has only a handful of lines in their title track and she’s the lead singer. their rappers have three times as many lines as she does. it was an insult. especially to someone who was leader of the group and barely sang in their own song.

“i assume once we’re given more of a veteran status we’ll be able to have weight and say in who gets what but as of right now, we get plucked and chosen by whomever the company wants to push the most. and somehow they want our mains doing that split.” sunmi tilts her head, eyeing meiqi’s legs. dancers weren’t meant to be masters by any means but a split like that was a move a little above their (solji and wendy’s) natural learning capabilities. as opposed to sunmi and meiqi, two girls who are more primed for dancing and could pick up the moves much faster; solji and wendy would have to dedicate some time to the move (although solji was an amazing dancer. someone who genuinely balanced both her top tier vocals and her dancing.) it still begs the question of how meiqi isn’t at least one of the girls in the middle.

“how flexible are you? how did you lose out on that anyways?” meiqi must be stiff as a freaking board not to be centre for the dance break.

sunmi wasn’t surprised when they called her to be amongst the three to be doing the split that was in their choreography in deja vu. not because she was the best choice but because she was just incredibly limber from years of gymnastics. while the choreography was being demonstrated to them she kind of matched up her positions in the choreography with her lines anyways so she knew before they even announced it that that was going to be the case regardless.

although she stretched earlier that day, sunmi took the liberty to stretch again. she doubts they’ll be reaching the part with the split the first day learning the choreography but knowing sunmi, she’d take the liberty of pushing herself to learn it anyways. she thought of the moves leading up to the split, gently doing them in the mirror. not to perfection mind you, just to get used to the beat in her head.

“split then a body roll back up. ballsy.” she turned to meiqi, throwing her arm around her roommate. “how are you feeling about the choreography so far?”

@rkmeiqi

rkmeiqi‌:

meiqi hadn’t a clue about this. it’s not like she had paid any attention in particular to trainees (and certainly not back when sunmi had probably been signed! that was years ago, when meiqi was even more interested in herself and only herself; at least now she makes the attempt to stay updated on trainees, but only because she is one). “wow, you’re just good at everything, huh?”

she means for it to be a joke, but with the current conversation, it comes out as bitter more than anything else. meiqi doesn’t try to remedy it. “i actually auditioned for nova before. i auditioned once after the hongdae show.” she recalls the mess that she had come up with after panicking out of what she had practiced. thinking back on it, she thinks that audition was similar to her experience on the sn project. maybe she’s always been like that. “i didn’t make it the first time, but nova gave me a second chance. that’s not better off. in baseball, they say three strikes and you’re out. my third strike was not measuring up to you. or, it should have been, but i’m the lucky bitch who gets four strikes instead. the one who people hate because it’s so unfair.”

it used to be so easy to toss caution to the wind, to do whatever she pleased without worrying about what other people thought about her. meiqi wishes she could go back to that time, not too long ago, but she also knows that this is her life now. this is pre-debut, and once she’s officially taken the stage for the first time as a member of and*roma, it’ll only escalate from there.

sunmi has a point. meiqi had made it her mission in the second and third month of the project to prove to hyun bin that she wasn’t going to fold over and conform to his idea of her skills. that should be a long-term goal, not a one-off. meiqi only realizes this as sunmi continues to explain her reasoning behind her thoughts.

honestly, meiqi doesn’t want to interrupt sunmi for the sole reason that her ego really needs these compliments. the fact that an older, more experienced trainee could see something so good in meiqi makes her toes curl. “are you… do you really believe all of that?”

sunmi’s eyes narrow, eyeing meiqi for the slick remark. “i’m not good at everything. you’re missing the entire point.” she doesn’t give the younger any shit beyond that which is surprising because usually sunmi is the type to keep going. but the point of the conversation was to remedy their relationship, not strain it further.

“if you think that was your fourth strike then i think i’ve had about six or seven by now. you can’t sit there and measure every failure as catastrophic. especially not when in the project, i got put in the danger zone as you got back out of it. yet in the end, we both made it in the group. same level, meiqi. two parts that make up a whole.” even if they both stumbled a couple of times, they both made it to the same place at the same time (although it took sunmi much longer to arrive). it wasn’t a competition. people were always going to compare them from now until their contracts are done. and sunmi needs meiqi to be ready to handle that.

“i do,” she tells her. sunmi doesn’t want to force herself to come off as earnest. she can’t force meiqi to listen to her or believe her. “look, this is going to be something we’re all going to face. meiqi, from now on, all of us are going to be compared to each other constantly and to other groups. i need to know that you’re strong enough and mature enough to understand that a bunch of random comments do no reflect who you actually are. i need to know you’re capable of handling that and not letting that effect how you interact with your other group members.”

rkmeiqi‌:

as expected of a leader, sunmi already has meqi figured out. it’s evident in the way she leaves no room for the inevitable denial of the facts. even the way she handles the situation with an air of maturity, everything about her screams leader material.

it’s kind of intimidating, and this is coming from a girl who, in high school, stood up to the assholes that would humiliate others, all the while having only a moderate grasp of the language. but in front of sunmi, she’s reduced to a… well, there’s no other way to say it other than that she’s reduced to a p.

the thing is, meiqi knows that hyun bin’s comments were (probably) scripted, or at least well thought out in order to give the show a dramatic flair (she’s learned that their ceo has a metaphorical b for the wow-factor, as evidenced from the minute he had announced the sn project’s premise). however, that didn’t matter. once it was in her head, it wasn’t just about what hyun bin thought. it was the truth, at least according to the comments she had read online after being freed.

“people do,” she blurts out. truly, this was a bigger issue to meiqi than just between the two of them. maybe it started out that way, or maybe meiqi was just blowing things way out of proportion now. she fiddles with her phone unconsciously. “people know that i can’t sing or rap. dance is all i can do, but even then, i’m lacking in comparison to you.”

“you’re right, though. i was being stupid. it’s not your fault.” meiqi doesn’t say the rest of what’s on her mind (it’s not your fault that you’re better than me and i don’t like that. it’s my fault for overestimating myself). because even if they are partners, parts of a well oiled machine, whatever analogy sunmi wants to use, meiqi knows that one half of a pair is always in better shape than the other. she’s just so used to being the better one, that she doesn’t know how to cope with knowing that this time she’s not.

sunmi closes her eyes. she remembers feeling that insecurity for years. she remembers constantly comparing herself to others. always wanting to be best, always wanting to do better. “there’s always going to be someone better. everyone has conflicting opinions,” she says. then she shakes her head. “you know, nova didn’t even want me when i first started. i was a little older than you are now. and nova rejected me the first mgas. i came from sphere. that’s where i got better at singing. i even rapped too. but you? you got here on your first shot. you didn’t need a stroke of luck like i did. i’m only here because nova bought my contract with sphere. you got here through the process without the hassle. i think that’s way better off already.”

which was true, in its own ways. hyun bin never disclosed to her why he bought her contract. she was suspicious that he wanted to take her popularity but he never used it when it was at its height. instead, he let it dwindle until it was non-existent; until it was nothing more than ‘sunmi is that trainee that’s been in nova for years’ and nothing more. so her being in nova was still a question to herself even to this day.

“fuck what everyone else thinks,” sunmi says with a short exhale out of her nose. “i drove myself crazy worrying about what other people thought. if i did that then i’d be bitching and whining that i’m not a good singer because that’s all hyun bin has told me the last four years i’ve been here and yet i still got lead singer.” she gives meiqi a look because it was true. “these comments are meant to get in your head but i know you’re better than that. i’ve never known you to be the type of person to just sit down and be who someone assumes you are just because they said so with conviction.

(sunmi felt like she could see her own stubborn determination in meiqi. was she wrong? she hoped not.)

“it’s not whether i’m right or wrong,” sunmi says, keeping her eye contact trained on the younger. “it’s whether you believe it. you have strengths i don’t. vice versa. you compare us because we’re both dancers but you also forget i have years on you. so it’s not the same. even then you can keep up with me. that only says more on your talents than my own. it took me five and a half years of training time, 23 years of constant dancing lessons to be right here where we are both standing together at this moment. you got here in a quarter of the training time and like an eighth of the years dedicated to dancing and you can match my level. whoever says you’re lacking is probably someone who either doesn’t know what they’re talking about or is some jackass who has never been a trainee in their life.”

before being told about their scheduled guest appearance on the show, meiqi didn’t even know what the return of the superman was. her first impression after hearing the title was that it was a show about superheroes—would they have to cosplay as them while they played games to determine who was the strongest avenger, or something along the lines of that? will they get to pick their own outfits for it, or will she have to dress up in cheap halloween costumes prepared by the staff?

upon learning that the show is about kids, she doesn’t know if that’s better or worse.

it’s not that meiqi hates kids; she thinks they can be cute and fun when they’re not crying over something stupid. but she’s also never spent an extended amount of time with them, being the youngest in her family. the most she’s done is coo at a baby in the streets. and then that same baby cried.

she’s going to have to stick to sunmi and seulgi as much as she can today.

“wait,” she stops sunmi’s train of thought to count on her fingers. she’s unperturbed by the fact that she didn’t know this little tidbit about sunmi (she should really start paying attention when other people talk about themselves), just confused. “you have ashe and another younger sister, and then there’s you… how many siblings are in your family?”

sunmi’s gifts for the kids are perfect. you can never go wrong with clothes, and meiqi wishes she had thought of that before. though, she supposes showing up with two pairs of outfits might not be the best idea, but it was better than her plan. meiqi had originally bought the kids a switch to share (her logic: juhee is practically a kid at heart and she likes it, so younger kids must like it too), but everyone told her that was too expensive and the parents wouldn’t like it, so she bought two last minute doll houses instead.

she holds the bags carrying the toys up unsurely. “i brought these… i don’t know what kids like, but the clerk at the shop recommended them…”

it doesn’t occur to sunmi until meiqi makes her pause and backtrack that not everyone knew about the new additions to the lee family. logically it made sense: meiqi didn’t come to nova until sunmi’s parents had the wedding and never got to come. it was a grande affair. sunmi was excited with how it had turned out. of course meiqi didn’t know.

“oh! yeah, my youngest siblings are twins. jinhee and jinyoung. they were born in 2016. their birthdays are coming up right after our promotion ends for high heels, actually,” sunmi says with a smile. though there are a lot of kids in the lee family. or it feels that way at least. “i’m the eldest, then it’s our stepbrother seungdong. he used to be a royal trainee but became a teacher instead. then it’s ashe. and then jinhee and jinyoung. and of course cheri is basically my dad’s other daughter because we grew up together…..”

it didn’t seem like that many kids. of course the family grew in the last four years but it wasn’t as if her dad had to deal with three kids and suddenly have twins as a new addition. she, her brother and sister were all grown and out of the house. her dad gets to dedicate all of his time to the twins.

she peered inside meiqi’s bag with a smile. “oh wow a dollhouse! i think that’s a really cute toy for them both. i think kids to stick to actual toys instead of their tablets.” jinyoung loved his tablet while jinhee never used hers unless it was for car rides. sunmi’s younger sister preferred going outside, running and playing with toys. although jinyoung never strayed too far from his sister’s side, he was usually on his tablet. “i had a dollhouse like this when i was little. my mom had gotten it for me for christmas the year she passed away. my little sister has it now.”

✧ babies galore ;

they were given a quick rundown of who they were meeting today. one of the show’s regular dads was a singer and actor who had two daughters. one was four and the other was almost two years old. they were told names, likes and dislikes. apparently the older one was a big fan of their music. it doesn’t surprise sunmi. their songs were very colourful and a lot of kids probably enjoyed it. maybe they’ll even dance with the little ones and teach them the point choreography.

“i got them both matching outfits,” sunmi shares with meiqi as they exit the van to where they were filming. it was one of those play zones for kids. even if their time today would be mostly short, sunmi knows she’ll be exhausted after filming. “my youngest sister is four now so i already have a membership at one of the children stores.”

the outfits were complete: a shirt and skirt with tights and cute ballet slipper shoes. a headband for each of them. she had contemplated getting them a toy too but she didn’t want to go overboard. besides, she’s sure meiqi and younggi brought something as well.

“it almost makes me sad i can’t bring my sister with me. she loves making new friends and she would have loved being here.” although the truth was, if she brought jinhee then she would have had to bring jinyoung. they hated being apart for too long. twins were a lot to handle. “did you bring anything?”

Wendy couldn’t do anything else but nod in approval when the dancers of AND*ROMA presented the choreography they came up with. She doesn’t know much about dance when compared to singing, but she couldn’t help but wonder why they weren’t allowed to come up with their own choreography more often. It’s probably the same reason she isn’t allowed to write any songs for the group.

She may not be one of the better dancers, but Wendy knows how to study whatever is presented to her. It’s a skill she picked up from figure skating, piano, guitar, and ballet classes before joining the ranks of Nova Entertainment.

The concept for this cover is a rather exciting one. It’s more in line with what suits their current age group, to be honest. Wendy feels like they’re all too old to dancing around while waving lollipops or using a fake cute voice. They are so way beyond that age, so when the dance line proposes an edgier, more mature cover, Wendy is one of the first to say “Yes!”

Honestly, Wendy would have been fine being in the background for most of the dance. She isn’t part of dance line and would have been fine if they got most of the spotlight. However, she was delighted to learn that all of them got their moment to shine. All of their dancers deserve so much better, and she hopes this cover shows exactly how good they are as a team.

Before she realizes it, D-Day for recording has arrived. Unlike recording for actual music videos, there’s none of the usual nerves that comes with it. The dominant feeling she has is excitement. After all, this is a surprise gift to the fans after winning their first music show. After all, they were gifted with a win, they should give back as well.

To get people hyped for the video, Wendy has taken it upon herself to post a teaser photo of the cover. It’s nothing too fancy, but she had to get AND*ROMA’s name out there in any way she can.

Her part in the choreography isn’t too hard to follow; however, Wendy had to spend a chunk of her time trying to push her hair back in a sexy, but subtle way. She only hopes she doesn’t screw up when recording actually happens.

Recording was as fun and exhausting as it could be. After all, they’re shooting the same dance over and over again. At least the other girls are a whole lot of fun to be with. She can’t imagine being stuck in a studio, recording the same thing over and over again with anyone else.

“Thank you for all your hard work!” They all say when recording ends. Wendy can only hope that the fans enjoy watching this as much as they did making it.
