Like. He can’t get a promotion. He’s already on his personal island with a full staff. What, does he want a sticker for getting a good grade in evil?

Barad Dur, the Dark Tower, was built by Sauron. Its construction started in !000 Second Age and took 600 years to be completed. It was the greatest fortress to ever exist in Middle Earth, apart from Angband. It was razed after the War of the Last Alliance, and rebuilt after Sauron came back to Mordor. It was here that Gollum was tortured. It also has pits and caverns underneath it, that probably serve as prisons or dwellings. IT was destroyed with the destruction of the One Ring, like Sauron.
We’re watching the Return of the King right now, and got to the part where Denethor is introduced. My husband asks me for the context of why Denethor is Like That, since I just finished reading the book. So I explained how Denethor has been using a Palantir for years to get information, and how Sauron has been manipulating him by only letting him see events that give him a worst possible impression of reality.
So my husband replies “Oh! So Denethor is basically just like your grandpa after he starts getting all his news from Fox.” And honestly, yeah pretty much.

Her memories of the West were mostly of painful, searing light. No matter where she went, it was inescapable. Telperion was better, she could just about bear it, but when Laurelin took over, she would find the deepest shadow she could to escape the burning gold.
She met Mairon, Aulë’s apprentice, just once in the west. It was during Telperion’s hours, and he had come looking for her.
‘Fire’s alright,’ she told him, grudgingly looking at his lantern. ‘But it’s the rest of the light. It blinds.’
‘It reveals things which would rather be hidden,’ said Mairon, gazing into the small flame with an unreadable expression. But she shook her head.
‘It does not.It blinds me, it makes it impossible to see anything. Light is glaring and blaring and blocks out everything else. In darkness there is peace, and clarity.’
