I’ve often marvelled at how quickly some people become your best friend and how others, no matter how much you will it to happen, just… well… don’t.

Like most, I have the childhood friends that I value deeply, carry with me everywhere in my deepest treasured thoughts and memories and the uni friends that no matter how long we don’t speak for we always pick up exactly where we left off.
With me for a lifetime!

Like most, I also have those friends that were incredibly close for so many months (and even years!) that are now, regrettably of course, not even on the agenda. Sad as it is to say, they are friends lost through time and space. Literally, actually, when one moves away and distance is a troublesome factor. Or when schedules don’t coincide for months on end. Or the simple nature of the human race that allows us to grow, develop and finesse out skills to incredible depth. Expectedly so, this can cause a diversion of interest, away from the initial path ensures that 2 people’s futures and fates no longer wear out the same route.

Similarly, there are those friends who have shared intense closeness over an era that leave behind a remarkable sadness in your heart when the natural course of life, namely the above, takes it’s grip on a friendship. I’ve often wondered why it’s a bigger deal, almost hurtful, but certainly sadder, when some friends are lost along the way over others.

This led me to thinking that perhaps it’s not so much the reasons for the diverging life patterns but rather the reasons that gave birth to the friendship in the first place. Perhaps it’s the presence of a genuine connection, maybe a shared experience, a bonding over similar trials and tribulations as opposed to a circumstantial scenario throwing several people in the same direction (work) and forcing each individual to adopt the survival instinct to make friends, build allies and make good of a somewhat shit situation.
With me for a reason…

So as I wrote this, lying in bed at nearly midnight it got me pondering existing friendships and reviewing the lifespan of them. However, milliseconds into this train of thought it is evident it’s a moot point. Only time will tell the story of a friendship, and only time will tell whether the closest of friends now are purely there for a season, or a reason, although in the case of my new and slightly bat shit crazy roomie, I do hope it’s for a lifetime!
