It’s artichoke season in Sicily. That means on almost every table, this flower (yes, it is a flower!) is served in many different ways. Here, it is roasted. There are different varieties of artichokes, one set is harvested in the spring (shown here) and the other in the fall. If you are traveling through Sicily, look for them! In the United States, we call this perennial herb Summer Asphodel. In Sicily, where during these months of February and March it grows seemingly on every hillside making many hungry sheep happy, it is called Asfodelo Mediterraneo. The snow-white flowers with a thin red-brown ribbon down their centers were associated with Persephone and the Underworld in ancient Greek mythology. In fact, our dark goddess is often depicted with a garland of Asphodel upon her head. Perhaps it represents her duality as innocent maiden who comes of age to be a sage queen–one who possesses a great sensuality running through her core? The two- to five-foot stalk thrives, after all, when this feminine deity returns to the upper world each year. Chiacchiere di Carnevale, pictured, are a crunchy, sweet, fried dough garnished with powdered sugar. Leading up to Martedì Grasso or Fat Tuesday, the height of Carnevale, one will find these all over Sicily. The label “chiacchiere” originates from Naples, where this fried mixture of flour, eggs, butter, and some kind of sweet wine reached high society. During the 19th century, the Queen of Savoy was seeking a sweet finger-food to offer her guests while they chatted. At the sanctuary devoted to the Maria Santissima di Gulfi in Chiarmonte Gulfi (Ragusa Province), pilgrims offered heart ex-votos to the Virgin Mother. Ex-votos are iconographic body parts or other symbols that are given to the Madonna (That is, in this case. At other sacred sites, ex-votos would be offered to the divinity or saint celebrated there.) as gratitude for healing or grace received. Those pictured here represent ailments the heart (Feeling broken hearted, anyone?). Ex-votos are very common in Sicily.
