Comic featuring Simon and Athena having the following conversation:
A - Simon, you remember Prosecutor Sahdmadhi, right?
S - Regrettably. Why? I take it you saw the Sad Monk over in Khura’in.
A - We did, we did! Well, there was a whole buncha stuff that happened but… I’m so happy we managed to reunite the royal family!
There’s a pause.
S - The what.
A - The royal family. You know, of Khura’in? Princess Rayfa is Nahyuta’s little sister. Didn’t you watch the news?
They both face the TV behind Simon, which is saying, “And now, a word from the Regent of Khura’in…”
Nahyuta shows up on screen. “Please, just ‘Nahyuta’ is fine.”
Simon whips back around to face Athena, bewildered.
A - You didn’t know?! What kind of rock have you been living under?!! Simon, this was like world news for the past 3 weeks, where on earth have you BEEN?
Simon slurps his noodles loudly and does not answer.

blackmadhi week day 3: culture

First comic features Athena and Simon having the following conversation:
Athena asks, “Oooh, what’re you reading? ‘The Pillars of Khura’inism? That’s new.”
To which Simon responds, “I’m fact-checking. There’s no way there’s a hell made of tickling or a hell of (oddly specific) hangnails. It’s all balderdash. The Sad Monk is making it all up.”
Athena looks pensive, asking again, “You think? Wouldn’t it be, like, bad to lie about your religion?”
“Irrelevant.” Simon replies. “I care not for what that blackguard gets up to.”
Athena interjects, “Says the one looking up Khura’inese insults now.”
Simon answers, “‘Pohlkunan’ is very versatile.”
Finally, Athena says, “… Simon, you know that you can talk to Nahyuta normally, right? Just reading about someone’s background… won’t get you any closer to them, you know?”
Simon concludes with, “…I know.”
Second comic features Apollo and Nahyuta having the following conversation:
“’The History of Rakugo’… ‘Japanese Society’… ‘Legend of the Samurai’…? Hey, Yuty, what’s with all these books on Japan?”
“They’re for research purposes.” Nahyuta responds.
“Research for what? Are you going to Japan?”
“Not that I know of, no.”
“Then, why?”
Apollo is met with silence. He then offers his own thoughts, saying, “…does this have something to do with Prosecutor Blackquill? I know he keeps playing mind games with you, but don’t listen to him, Nahyuta. He’s just trying to rile you up.”
Nahyuta declares, “I am going to defeat him at Japanese Trivia and then we will see who is laughing.”
Apollo looks exasperated all of a sudden, remarking, “…I can’t believe you’re trying to out-nerd Blackquill.”
“And succeeding.” Nahyuta adds.
“And… succeeding.” Apollo repeats skeptically.
Third comic features Simon and Nahyuta having the following conversation with a shared thought bubble on top of their heads, reading:
“What part of me getting invested in your culture and niche obscure interests do you not understand. I am in love with you”
Nahyuta starts speaking, saying, “What are you looking at? Direct your filthy eyes elsewhere.”
“Tch.” Simon responds. “I’m only looking in this direction because I felt your piercing gaze at my back! You look away first.”
“You look away first.” Nahyuta insists.
“No, you look away first.” Simon shoots back.
“I don’t feel like it.”
“Hmph. Well, I don’t feel like it, either!”

“Do you hate your family? I want to hate them too!
I’m a 29 year old ex-convict (didn’t actually kill anyone, don’t worry) who probably hates your family and probably doesn’t have anything to do but terrorize them. I will be your platonic date to a stupid family dinner or gathering for one (1) night/event.
I work at a noodle place and will get buckwheat flour all over your family members, if you ask me to. I will also make fun of you and your family members, because that’s all I do in general anyway. Other services include telling scary prison stories, threatening to show any possible prison scars, pretending to get very drunk, hitting on a different family member, or hitting a family member. May be convinced to propose to you in front of your family members, too.
Feed me and maybe give me $30?”
This cuts into the next scene, which is mid phone call with Simon and Nahyuta. This is lifted directly from the fic, with talking tags added below where it may not be clear without context.
“I will pay you. More than what the ad said.” [Nahyuta told him.]
“How much?” Simon asked. If it was a big enough sum, it might be worth it to spend a few agonizing hours with this man and his shitty family.
“$200. I’ll make it $300 if you bring flour to get all over my brat of a little sister. The ad said that you would do that.”
Ye gods, if this right bastard of a man thought that his little sister was a brat she must be terrible.
“Will you do it now?”
“…Fine.”
“Excellent. That’s what I thought your answer would be in the end, Simon. What’s your full name?”
“Simon Blackquill,” he ground out.
“And I’m Nahyuta Sahdmadhi. Can you promise to be as insufferable to the rest of my family and friends as you have been to me?”

blackmadhi week day 1: freedom ⛓️

Comic is set out with the implication that the late Metis Cykes is narrating to Simon Blackquill, as follows:
It is true. There are so many things you haven’t done. And so many things you will never get to do. You will never get those milestones you think you’ve missed, or enjoy those memories you weren’t able to partake in while the world kept spinning on without you. You will never be as young as you once were, and now that your back hurts in the morning, you will probably wish you’d experienced more when you were still able.
But you have to let go of your unlived life eventually. There is still so much you haven’t seen. The world is so much bigger than you think. I cannot promise that you’ll always enjoy it, or that you’ll always be happy with the cards you’ve been dealt. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. Freedom isn’t about getting what you want - it’s about being able to choose for yourself what kind of place you belong in, what kind of people you want to be surrounded by, what kind of weapon you use against hardships, and whether or not you choose to forgive yourself for your past mistakes.
And perhaps, one day, when you have learned how to live again, you’ll be the one to teach someone else what it means to feel truly free. Please do not think of me anymore. Seven years is long enough, my dear student. You are free, even though you may like to curse at it, even though it might not be how you imagined it, even if I am not there to witness it. You are free.

A - OMG shut UP Simon! I’ve got everything!! I know you’re doing this specifically to annoy me because I can’t turn notifs off in case it’s a work call. Which this is not. By the way. Do something more productive with your day off! Mamma mia! Go hang out with your clown friends
S - Buy my silence. Permanently. $8000 per month. For $8000 a month, I will stop.
A - why did you use your mugshot for this
S - It’s the best photo of me ever taken and nothing will ever come close to matching it.
A - ok whatever can you stop texting me you’re so annoying. I’m literally fine
S - Until you want to admit the truth that you are, in fact, not fine, my silencing fee is $8000/month as stated above. If you send a hitman after me, I’ll defeat them so don’t bother.

Comic begins with Simon yelling:
“Stop following after me! You’re stuck in a time that no longer exists, Athena! Can’t you see that?! You can’t get your ‘uncle Simon’ back… because I am no longer the boy I once was-! I can never return to those days and neither can you!”
Athena reaches out to him, saying, “W-wait, Simon… I just wanted to save you from-”
Simon interrupts, “I didn’t ask to be saved by you! I didn’t ask you to throw out the life you could have lived to work tirelessly for my sake!”
Athena starts yelling back, “Well, neither did I! You think I asked you to protect me?!”
Second page continues with Athena’s dialogue, as she cries, “Don’t talk about sacrifices like your life wasn’t ruined by what you did 7 years ago!”
She calms down, saying much quieter, “How dare you… how dare you think for even a second that I would have just walked away and let you die?”
Simon doesn’t look back at her, and responds, “Well, perhaps you should have.”
