ILL MISS YOU, SK8. COME BACK
You like this person, right?
Miya: I just ended a four year relationship.
Langa: Oh, I’m so sorry. Are you okay?
Miya: Hm? Oh yeah, I’m fine. It wasn’t my relationship.
*Cherry and Joe fighting from across the room*
i’m so behind on renga week, but here are days 3 and 5!!
i’ve been swamped with schoolwork, but i’m trying to complete as many as i can! i’ll probably come back and do day 4 when i have time because i absolutely adore
also please ignore my inconsistency in my art style and also how stupid day 3 looks (i didn’t have time to fully sketch and render so i just did a quick sketch)
#rengaweek2021 DAY 2: Movie Poster!!❤️
ahhh this is kinda late because i had so many classes today, but here’s like a dirty dancing (skating??) inspired renga poster hehhehe
yes, reki is wearing the necklace langa was wearing in the last post
I will not accept criticism
Please this is getting ridiculous
(If you can’t read it’s written ‘over the rainbow’)
Since i didn’t do it before now i will talk about my favourite lines in the previews dubbed episode
- The fact that when Kaoru and Kojiro started yelling at each other (like always) they talked about having a night out. And kaoru said “our night out” so i thought it was something only between them too. I’m not saying anything, just pointing out.
- Reki’s sister saying he’s acting like a drama queen WAS SO ICONIC SORRY WHY ISN’T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT THAT
- Even though it wasn’t anything different from the original the way langa said he likes reki… idk i’ve felt it like more real than the original. Yk like “here he is saying he likes reki in that sense”, like i was watching it and just thought that this isn’t explainable in any other way. Maybe because of the language where “like” doesn’t have a lot of other ways to think about it. And since langa was blushing it was i’ve felt it more than the original. Even the tone of his “yeah” was firmer than the original. Howard Wang is doing an awesome job JUST LOVED IT
- AND MY FAVOURITE THAT I KEPT AT LAST BECAUSE I LOVE IT AND BECAUSE I’VE ALREADY TALKED ABOUT IT THE ICONIC “BITCHES AND BROS AND NON BINARY HOES” love it, perfect, it’s a gem of modern cinematography. As non binary myself i’ve found that so beautiful, it was set up perfectly, wasn’t in any way out of the character or the setting, I WILL PRAY for the damn mind behind it. Also this is the first time i ever heard about a character saying explicity the word non binary in an anime. I don’t even know if someone said that in any cartoon in general (maybe for adult ones but not for the others, don’t know honestly)
Really thanks to the person behind it. It’s not even the original but it’s so satisfying to watch without changing in any way the original product, just a way to make it more “western” maybe? But not in a bad way, it’s not erasing the original or the culture behind it like they did in the 90s, it’s just making it more enjoyable for who watches it right now keeping in mind the kind of the audience that the show has.
At the same time the show itself is set as something enjoyable from both asian and western culture so it’s not changing anything. It’s just making it good for us, something that even if they try in the japanese version it’s not gonna be perfect since they have to think about the japanese audience at first.
And it’s not like a part is doing it worst than the other, AT THE OPPOSITE, IT’S SO LOVABLE PEOPLE ARE ENJOYING IT IN TWO DIFFERENT LANGUAGE AND WITH TWO DIFFERENT PORTRAYAL OF SOME RELATIONSHIP DINAMICS it’s like watching it for the first time.
So thanks to all the people who are working behind this dub, you’re doing an awesome job
Is it just me or is everyone upset at the fact that Adam didn’t face literally any consequences?
Besides losing the beef— and barely, at that— not a single thing happened to him. He found out that there was no Eve but now it’s implied he doesn’t need one. After years of abuse to Tadashi, whatever criminal activities he and his business are involved in and definite attempted murder against Cherry, Reki, Langa and whatever other skaters in the past, he basically just got to go “I guess skating is fun” and then resume his criminal activities in the business world.
On top of that, he apparently gets to keep abusing Tadashi who is just? Okay with that? Because Adam remembers them skating as kids fondly and implied some weird, creepy ownership of Tadashi that is apparently okay with Tadashi?
The plot line with the detective was totally wasted. There was no need for her character at any point now because she didn’t serve to actually do anything. All we get is Adam selling someone out at the end to get her off his tail but like, we all knew Adam already sucked so it’s not like we needed that scene.
And maybe that’s what bothers me so much. It doesn’t appear that Adam has changed at all. And don’t get me wrong, I was rooting for jail and for him to never touch a skateboard again in his life. But if that’s not gonna happen and he’s gonna learn a lesson, he should at least change. And he didn’t, he really didn’t. Nothing it shows after the beef indicates that he has changed at all. He shows up uninvited at that bbq with flowers for Langa, so he’s still a creepy stalker with no boundaries. He tells Tadashi that he’ll be a dog for the entirety of their lives, so he’s still an abusive and manipulative boss (lover? There’s still so much to unpack here). And he sells out that other guy so he’s still a shady businessman engrossed in illegal activities.
Besides deciding that skating is fun and is better with other people, Adam doesn’t change at all.
I’m glad that he tried to fight Langa on that, though. I will say that gave a more believable and realistic take to it than just Langa being like “skating is fun and meant to be shared!” And Adam immediately going “you’re right!”. At least he tried to say no, to push the idea away. That’s fitting of Adam’s character and I think that part was done well.
But I guess I’m just let down that Adam had been shown time and time again to be basically irredeemable and to do all these things that are not okay and now he just gets to? Keep doing them? He gets to keep coming to S? He gets to skate with the crew? He gets to keep his business, keep his employee? He spent 12 episodes getting progressively worse and then they were just like “okay but he remembers skating is fun!” Okay? He’s still a horrible human who has the karma bus coming for him with a list of reasons three miles long?
I just think Adam deserves any kind of consequence and he got none. And then he didn’t even change into a better person and that’s the only thing about the finale that bothers me.
^ THIS
Honestly i think they decide to do it like this because they hope for a second seaso, otherwise if they really wanted to redeem him than they would’ve made him go against his aunties who are his abusers (and who were shown to us in a way that we can’t even empathize for them).
I think that the thing that makes sk8 really good it’s the fact that the show talks about sk8 only superficially, but in reality it’s all about relationships and different kind of relationships, different ways of seeing relationship and so different approach towards life.
I find the Adam the most interesting as a characters since he depicts an abuse survivor (who still is under his abusers) in a very realistic way and when he is already an adult. Abuse survivor aren’t good little beans who just need to find love (a thing that even he thinks) but often they grow and become abusers themselves. The fact that he is still attached to his aunties makes me see him as a baby with a lot of power and not as a responsabile adult. The series infantilize him constantly, even if he sees himself as great, other people don’t and this has its peak in episode 11 when he is literally made fun of.
If they really wanted to redeem him (and so making him change) they would have made him see his aunties for who they are and understand what love is. But it’s not like that and that’s why his way of saying to Tadashi to always be with him is so toxic. That’s why he doesn’t change, he doesn’t even understand why his actions are so terrible. He don’t know what love is and it’s not up to Langa, Reki or anyone to teach him what it is.
I think that the ending was too rushed and definetly not at the level of the rest of the series but the series itself it’s very short for a sport anime. In general it doesn’t follow the stereotypical scheme of a sport anime if not in some things, it’s more like a sperimental progect to see if it would’ve worked and it definetly worked, so yeah i don’t see the last episode as a way to redeem him, just a way to make an open ending if there will be something new.
