Here is Part 1 of my notebook from today’s online seminar “32 Awesomely Practical UX Tips” presented by Rosenfeld Media and Environments for Humans.

These pages feature the first speaker of the day, Dave Gray (founder of XPLANE, author of Gamestorming and The Connected Company).

Because Dave’s session was so interactive, and focused largely on sketching, it was very easy to sketchnote his presentation. I found that I stopped sketchnoting while listening to the other presenters, mostly due to the density of the content and the speed… (I’m still pretty slow, I’ll admit) but I plan to add to this notebook over the next week or two as the videos become available.

Made with Paper by Danya D. Smith

Today I watched an introductory video about the Bullet Journal system created by Ryder Carroll. I used to be an avid Franklin Planner user back in the day… but as they started integrating technology into the system (via Palm OS devices and software) I tried to change to a more technology-based system. It never worked for me, but I never went back to their paper planner. Since then, I’ve tried a few things… the Muji Chronotebook, the Action Method (both online and analog) and others… I can’t seem to find a system with the right amount of structure, flexibility and flow. Templated pages don’t seem to work for me anymore… especially after I’ve switched to visual notetaking and I have learned to prefer blank pages. Most day planners don’t give me enough space for journaling or note-taking between task or event planning.

I just stumbled upon this doing some research on visual thinking (specifically the use of bullets) and I’m very VERY glad I did… I plan to try this system for 100 days, perhaps add my own tweaks, and see how this works. Just at a glance, I’m really liking this system.

We have been on the go so much this week, I’m just getting a chance to post these…

This weekend, I practiced sketchnoting a talk with Josh Kaufman, author of The Personal MBA, on a new book he wrote called The 20 Hour Rule

- from The Accidental Creative podcast.

Accepting that my first sketch is awful is one of the most useful lessons I’ve learned. I cannot repeat it enough: a first sketch is always horrible, and that’s precisely what it should be!

That first horrible sketch helps you to get rid of an empty canvas. It gives you an idea of what you’ll be drawing and some general shapes to work with. That’s its purpose!

I love drawing characters, so it’s no surprise that they’ll usually take center stage. That is if I bother to give them a stage. Because most of the time, I’ll just leave them standing in the big empty.

Here’s how I go from boring outlines to interesting shapes (hopefully). And the good news is that you can do this with any object!

Often I need more than two rounds of sketches to get a character or pose right. So I just keep finetuning, focussing on different areas each round. In this case, I zoomed in on the pose before coming up with the outfit. Understanding the figure really helps when drawing clothes!
