Tokyo 東京 in perspective. With 634 meter, Tokyo skytree 東京スカイツリー is the world’s tallest tower and the world’s second biggest building after all. (after Burj Khalifa in the Arab Emirates)  From up there, even the massive skyscrapers of Shinjuku appear tiny. There are two observatories, one at 350m and one at 450m but at this height, the noticable difference is small. Entry fee for the lower observatory is around 2500 Yen and there is an extra charge of additional 1000 Yen for the upper one.

While it sure is an unique experience, I thought it to be way to expensive and I had to wait like three hours to get in. Just one hour in a queue because you get a ticket for the queue to the ticket with a specific time on it, a system which let’s you at least look around (the shopping center) for most of the time. But for a scenic view of Tokyo from above, the Metropolitan Building at Shinjuku offers almost the same experience. For free. It’s still worth the money, if you have enough of it.

New renderings have been released for the new supertall office tower that will replace Hotel Pennsylvania. The Foster + Partner’s-designed tower, named PENN15 (not a joke), would top out at 1,270 feet, taller than the Empire State Building.

The skyscraper looks a lot like the residential Jenga block tower Downtown – 56 Leonard, with dozens of unique landscape terraces protruding from the facade.

Hotel Pennsylvania was originally developed by the Pennsylvania Railroad after the opening of Penn Station, one of the only real estate ventures for Penn RR, unlike the New York Central RR who developed or sold most of the real estate around Grand Central. Penn RR originally had their architects McKim, Mead & White design a hotel tower above Penn Station, but eventually decided not to add it for multiple reasons. After Penn Station opened, architect William Symmes Richardson of McKim, Mead & White designed the hotel, which opened across the street in 1919. Despite multiple demolition attempts over the last three decades and the establishment of the Hotel Pennsylvania Preservation Society, the building was never landmarked.

Happy 90th birthday to the Empire State Building, which opened on May 1st, 1931 after just 13 months of construction! The 102-story, 1250-foot tall skyscraper was dedicated by former New York State Governor Alfred Smith and current Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, who after the ribbon cutting ceremony signaled President Herbert Hoover in the White House to flip a switch, instantly illuminating the world’s tallest building. It would hold the title of world’s tallest for forty years until the opening of the World Trade Center in 1971.
