Been having weird weather this February – big swings between warm and cold.  Nearly 70 degrees here on Wednesday.  On Friday, 10 inches of snow.

At least the latter let me get out for some snowshoeing, finally!  Due to other scheduled errands, I couldn’t get out until the very end of the day, but it made for a nice sunset walk.

Upper and Lower Winner Creek Trail
Chugach Natl Forest

The Winner Creek Trail is a soft sauntering path of roughly 12 miles along the old Iditarod trail that begins just behind my house in Girdwood, AK. I feel extremely lucky to have such rad scenery so accessible and near to me!

Missing this place. -

Imagine this….It’s a crisp five degrees out. You can hear the buzzing of snowmobiles fading through the trees. Birch trees sway in the breeze coming off the lake. And you are warm in this cozy lil cabin. -

The first step is the hardest. Literally, the first time you walk in snowshoes it takes some getting used to, but if you can walk you can snowshoe. Don’t let the weather keep you away from fun.
.
If you love hiking I suggest that you try snowshoeing. It’s a great winter activity with limited new gear. Get snowshoes and hiking poles. Done!

Yosemite National Park: Full Moon Snowshoeing

Last weekend we went to Yosemite National Park to go snowshoeing. All of these images are from that late night hike and all of these shots are lit only by the moonlight. Instead of using a tripod and long exposures which interfere with any kind of adventure I opted to use the new Sony A7S II camera, known for it’s insane lowlight capabilities. The camera was quite impressive and I was able to shoot some amazing stills and video (the video I’ll post on a later date). most of these shots are 1/60 of a second exposures and taken at 102,400asa all the way up to the camera’s maximum 409,600asa. The shots were taken with a Canon 24mm f1.4 lens. Even though the camera is amazing it’s autofocus with Canon lenses is horrible. Yes, Sony lenses focus quickly and accurately but I’m not a fan of their lenses yet. Regardless, I had a blast using this camera.
