There’s a deeper story behind this video….
In this video we see some squats with the plates rumbling.
But the story here is unique. Unique for what I see today, but not unique for what I used to see 10, 15 and 20 years ago when I started coaching.
There was something special about those athletes, very much like our boy Jimmy in this video.
Jimmy had already finished his training session. Part of his training was 5 x 2 FULL Cleans.
But then, Jimmy saw Thomas squatting and the bar was loaded. So, Jimmy jumped in at 225 and 315.
We call this “Extra Normal Credit”. NOT, extra credit. This is NORMAL.
10-20 years ago, I was kicking kids out of The Underground.
Ray Jaz’s Dad would fall asleep in the parking lot waiting for him to get finished. One night we had a power outage, the entire street was dark. Ray Jaz trained in the dark.
Other athletes would finish training and then pull out the tires and farmer walk handles. An impromptu Strongman Competition would break out. Athletes were timing each other.
On other days athletes would go and take a hard RUN.
Other days, athletes would carry something heavy and walk laps around the gym next door. Sometimes these carries would go on for 5 or 6 laps, which was around ½ a mile. Some kids carries kegs, others would wear an 88 lb vest and then throw a 100 lb sandbag over their shoulders.
Today, life is hectic. Athletes have club practice all year round.
We see some high level athletes too busy for strength training, then they get to college and can’t break into the line up because they lack strength.
Others are burned out and want nothing to do with college sports.
A little “Extra NORMAL Credit” is good for the mind and body.
Some time away from sport is recommended to give the body a break from repeated movements.
And for the athletes, some time to figure things out on their own and create their own workout is FUN for them.
If we’re not having FUN, then what the hell are we doing!?!?
