Hey, wanna see a Cool Rock?
Here’s an interesting piece from my collection. This awesome specimen is mordenite on stilbite! The fluffy puffball-looking formations are mordenite, and the peach-colored crystals they’re growing on are stilbite. They’re both part of the zeolite group of minerals.
The mordenite in this piece is especially cool! Mordenite can form in all kinds of different crystal habits, like asbestos-like fibers or needle-like acicular sprays. But these weird puffballs are my favorite form of mordenite. They look soft and fluffy, like cotton balls or little puffball mushrooms. But these formations are actually more like spikeballs. They’re hard, solid rock!
Poke poke… nope, not fluffy at all. It feels completely solid and has a rough, spiky texture. Can you believe a rock could just form in nature that way? What a cool and unusual rock!
One of my spot cleaning guns lost pressure somehow, and now it’s stuck on what seems to be the perfect strength to clean harder zeolites and other specimens in the field! I brought a battery along on my recent trip, and I’m probably gonna take it everywhere now. Check this stilbite as found, which I figured was decomposed beyond recognition. Just a few passes with the gun turned it into an absolute stunner on its bed of heulandite, with wild bicoloration and ample size and terminations. Included are a few videos of field cleaning heulandite and a lovely chocolate honey calcite found with @unearthed.minerals over the weekend.

Here’s some of the crazy little pockets of zeolites and calcite from the same host rock as my last post. I especially love the clusters of single, clear stilbite crystals against the stark black background of druzy covered matrix. I’m not sure what all the other zeolites are, but I heard thompsonite and likely scolecite and/or mordenite are present, among others. Spot shown to me by @pnw_rocktography, dug with him and @unearthed.minerals many weeks ago

Golden stilbite and associated clay minerals from a local Clackamas County spot along the Willamette River collected months ago with @pnw_rocktography and @unearthed.minerals. These pockets are nice, but the really cool and scary looking material comes in smaller pockets in the same host rock, as this stuff is riddled with wildly varying formations, minerals and colors. I’ll post them here imminently as I play catch up on the last few collecting trips.

Went crystal hunting for stilbite today! I found this place a few years ago but it is kinda a scramble to get up there so I really hadn’t been back until today. Worth the climb, I think.
