Can you trust your local occult store’s herb selection? I’m not even going to go into the ethics of harvest or conservation for once. Just strait up: Can you trust them with your life?

I have a life-threatening allergy to a common herb.  Can I trust that the store washes the scoops between uses and does not re-use scoops from one container to another? Can I trust that there is no cross-contamination? Can I trust that the supplier is fastidious and careful?

Can I trust that the ACONITE and the SKULLCAP don’t ever, ever, get mistaken for one-another? Can I trust that that jar of green … whatever… is actually skullcap at all? Is it Parsley? Mint? Marjoram? Is it adulterated with grass clippings for a cheaper market price? Can I trust their labeling at all, basically? Can I trust these fuckers with my life?

Good questions to ask:

  • Do you use scoops and are they washed between uses?
  • Are your store containers ever re-purposed and are they washed between uses?
  • Do you trust your supplier to provide herbs that are safe for use as (example: Incense, tea, bath additive, floor wash)?
  • Do you trust that this herb is the represented plant and not a substitution with potentially lethal action?
  • May I take a look at the bulk jar/bag up close? (Note: This one sounds odd, but if your store doles out of jars on a shelf behind a counter that you can’t get to examining it close-up allows you to look for things like insects and/or their… ah… leftovers. Or worse.)

No joke, though… it can be dicey business asking questions. One time a clerk went so off-the-walls about perfect love and perfect trust we’re all sons and daughters of one mother-goddess that I felt really bad about my follow-up. “Okay, but… probably don’t buy from this supplier again because that’s actually cypress landscaping mulch and they hella ripped you off.”

Another store got very, very, pissy when I pointed out that their giant, witchy, apothecary jar was not properly sealed and had let in some sort of pest. Said larvae had turned the bottom six inches of the herb (at the back/bottom of the jar away from the light) into poop. The grubs were still actively crawling around in it.

Ask questions. Be prepared for unkind answers. Don’t patronize unkind stores again.

He’s one of those prize egg dispensers, and has no eggs.  He clearly needs work.  I think he’s a cutie!

Apple closed 95 stores worldwide in past week due to COVID-19

While most countries across the globe have some sort of measure in place, advising people to stay home where possible and avoid the retail rush this festive season as a result of COVID-19, more people being in stores seems unavoidable at this stage.
It is likely why Apple has been closing some of its stores worldwide over the past seven days.
To that end, Apple is estimated to have closed 95 of…

If you want to see how poorly people are willing to treat you for so little in return with absolutely no shame, then work in retail.

As we enter the holiday season, please remember this:

  • Retail workers are going to be working crazy hours and standing for most likely more than six hours at a time.
  • Retail workers are highly under paid.
  • Retail workers’ schedules WILL be taking them away from their families during times when everyone else gets to see theirs.
  • If a retail worker isn’t smiling at you, it probably has nothing to do with you. There is just a STRONG chance they’ve been getting yelled at all day and don’t have the energy to smile at everyone anymore.
  • Most retail workers either have another job, are in college, or graduated college but because of this sh*tty economy the only job they can get is part-time. So DO NOT treat them less than. Most of them are highly educated.
  • And lastly, RETAIL WORKERS ARE F***ING PEOPLE.

Be kind.
