archiemcphee:

Kansas City-based artist Rena Detrixhe created this exquisite tablecloth using thousands of seed that she collected in Lawrence, Kansas. Detrixhe painstakingly stitched the seeds together in beautiful lace-like patterns on a large piece of sheer fabric. The seed appear to be levitate as the pattern cascades off the sides of the table. This marvelous 2013 installation, entitled Heirloom, looks so delicate that, not only would we never dare sit down to a meal or even tea at this table, we feel like we’d be compelled to speak quietly in its presence, lest the volume of our voices disturb the fragile seeds.

Heirloom was created in order to catalyze discussion about the relationship between art and nature.

“The table and cloth were created to exist as a stage or platform,” the artist says on her website. “As part of its exhibition, individuals were invited to participate in a round-table discussion including environmentalists, ecologists, biologists, artists, and other researchers.”

Rena Detrixhe describes herself as a “hunter and gatherer of materials” and views nature itself as fine art.Click here to view more of her environmental and textile-based artwork.

You are invited to view the new collection of handwoven cushion covers, depicting charming figurative scenes and planes of mellow gradients.

Respect for old knowledge and craftsmanship is at the core of these designs, which feature an amalgamation of traditional elements with modern minimal weaves.

At the workshop one can also find a variety of delightful handwoven items like bracelets, shawls, mobile phone cases, cushion covers, pouches and glass-mats.

All make unique beautiful Christmas presents!

Painting bold geometric patterns on furniture was common practice in Eptakomi, a tradition applied on looms too.

It was sold to me by refugees many years ago and it bears the husband’s initials as opposed to those of the weaver’s on one of its beams.
