Me reading fairy p!rn in 2021 (published books)

The audio is from Little Women (2019), and the casting of Saoirse Ronan as Jude and Timothee Chalamet as Cardan is almost perfect?? Except I hate Chalamet’s voice :))

ANYWAY YA books should get anime adaptations and I should do them!!! (Also yeah they are supposed to be dancing for this but uhhh)

Now that I’m more or less a tiktok animator (somehow), I’d like to animate a scene from tfota, to prove that YA books should get anime adaptations. Any suggestions? Preferably with little to no dialogue because I’m not doing voices

So I kinda figured out how to do art nouveau and immediately wanted to draw ya boi

*** SPOILERS FOR Queen of Nothing ****

Originally, I was asked to craft this concept relating to the quote ‘By you, I am forever undone’. So I thought, “When Cardan is undone, what would Jude find?”. A shabby heart; one that looks so like a cocoon just waiting to hatch. The three rings in the background also represent elements that were 'undone’. The crown, the curse, and the Greenbriar bloodline (encircled in starry branches, referencing the prophecy foretold in the stars)

So yeah, was all about those QON vibes….. until.

Time to reveal the three new papercraft artworks featured in the Illumicrate Collections box for The Cruel Prince in collaboration with Holly Black! This was such a passion project, and an amazing honor to be included in a masterfully curated box!

This was a super fun project and I had an amazing time experimenting with new techniques to feature detailed illustrations in a papercraft setting. I was able to photograph the super crisp silhouettes by illuminating the background with LED lights!

The Cruel Prince (gold) cover is probably my favorite of the three. Lots of hidden mild symbolisms for Jude and Cardan. The moth, representing change. Cardan’s bitten everapple; tasting the forbidden fruit. (and stupidly drunk on it) One wing mantle; fallen out of the nest; abandoned.

The Wicked King (teal) cover is a great transitional piece. Who is really in control? The power struggle that happens during this book is symbolically shown here: is Jude pulling Cardan down with her? Is she grabbing him for help? Is he trying to stop her? Is he trying to save her?

The Queen of Nothing (purple) was a shot in the dark with its symbolisms, (mostly pulled from the cover and with tidbits provided from Illumicrate) as I made it before I read the novel (and boy, did I hit them on the nose!). Jude’s dress comes directly from the book and is inspired by Celtic wedding dresses. I think TFOTA artists are secretly cursing Holly for choosing a snake aesthetic. That darn thing had to be drawn by hand, swirlies and all!

Each cover features a hidden creature in the black - can you spot them all?

A new illustration  of the many numerous scenes I’ve wanted to illustrate since reading QON last November. If it’s not clear, this is the scene when the Bomb asks Cardan to leave the royal chambers so she can repair and redress Jude’s stitches - and Cardan gets the final quip as he exits. These little subtle gestures are easy to miss, but make such a big impact with character and relationship building (at least for the reader’s eyes). It didn’t say explicitly in the text, but I’d imagine Jude was quite in a state after the lines Cardan spoke just before this moment. Quite fun to express, for both of them. (and the Bomb totally knows what’s up)

i will never get over these tfota parallels

jude at the beginning of tcp:

jude at the end of tqon:

never not thinking about that jurdan moment in queen of nothing when:

“What was it like?” I ask. “Being a serpent.”

He hesitates. “It was like being trapped in the dark,” he says. “I was alone, and my instinct was to lash out. I was perhaps not entirely an animal, but neither was I myself. I could not reason. There were only feelings—hatred and terror and the desire to destroy.”

I start to speak, but he stops me with a gesture. “And you.” He looks at me, his lips curving in something that’s not quite a smile; it’s more and less than that. “I knew little else, but I always knew you.”

And when he kisses me, I feel as though I can finally breathe again.

jude & madoc’s relationship [tfota spoilers]

i don’t think y’all understand the way jude & madoc’s relationship absolutely KILLS me .

it agonizes jude to love madoc when he is the one who killed her parents, but he is the only father she has ever known.

she wants to be nothing like him, and yet she is her father’s daughter. it is him who teaches her to fight, to be strong, to be ruthless and unyielding and cunning. and she loves him for this, so much so that when she uses all that he taught her against him, it breaks her heart a little.

when they find themselves on opposite sides of the war, jude can think only of how his love for her is not enough to outweigh his love for power. yet she realizes that her love for him does not outweigh her desire for power either. they are two sides of the same broken coin.

in the end, when she must pronounce madoc’s punishment, she exiles him because she knows that being forced to live in a place of peace is a worse fate than death for him. and yet a small part of her also cannot bear to see him die. she knows their relationship can never be healed, but it is her lingering love for the father that taught her how to be strong once upon a time that saves him from death.

jude has only ever called madoc “father” when she is about to betray him, but when she whispers, “goodbye, father” it is not to announce a betrayal. it is to acknowledge that he is her father, and she loved him, and she hurt him, and he did exactly the same to her, and now they find themselves back where they first began with the roles reversed- madoc brought jude to the faerie realm, where she had no desire to be, and now jude sends him to the human world, where he has no desire to be. but perhaps he might learn to love it the way jude grew to love elfhame.

perhaps jude’s punishment was never a punishment at all.

perhaps it was a final gift to the only father she ever knew.

I’m re-reading the cruel prince and it amazes me how well holly black wrote the misconception scenes between jurdan. almost every scene where jude thinks cardan is saying or doing something to humiliate or harm her, he’s always doing so to protect her and she can’t fathom otherwise whereas cardan thinks he’s being super obvious. these two idiots are so adorable

Most are commissioned illustrations, only the mermaid piece is personal. I haven’t panted for myself in quite some time.
