Be a better drummer, be an up and comer–
Can you picture THAT?” ⭐

this was my piece for ‘It’s Time To Play The Music,” a muppet charity zine I had the honor of participating in~ each artist was assigned a song to inspire an illustration; it was a thrill to be able to draw for one so close to my heart!

Muppet Fact #352

Jerry Juhl originally wrote Gonzo as a character with low self-esteem, and originally in the 70s, Dave Goelz leaned into that. At that time, he used Gonzo to highlight his personality and fears. However, when he asked Henson to change the puppet to have more expressive eyes, the wacky phase of Gonzo’s life started. Gonzo’s third, soulful phase came after Goelz went to therapy and began “unlocking [his] emotions.”

I’ll never understand why Disney is so focused on live-action remakes when they literally own the rights to the Muppets. I would take a Muppet remake of a Disney Animation classic over a live-action remake all day every day.

You can’t tell me Muppets Fantasia wouldn’t be the greatest crossover event of our lifetimes. Muppets Black Cauldron would SLAP.

Muppet Beauty and the Beast where the Beast is played by the only human actor and he turns into a Muppet at the end.

The Beast should be a conventionally attractive actor whom the Muppet townspeople continually call hideous until true love releases him from this curse and he shows true beauty - blue felt and plastic eyes.

I’ll never understand why anthropomorphic animal cartoons like Robin HoodandZootopia will go to the trouble of creating character designs that are meant to be understood as “attractive” or even “sexy” to the human audience but explicitly avoid showing interspecies romances between anthropomorphic animals. Why is THAT weird but, like, trying to make rabbits recognizably sexy-coded to humans isn’t?

Sometimes, sure, but why was Maid Marian a fox in Robin Hood? There wasn’t anything particularly “foxlike” about her personality, and it would make more sense for her to be a lion. They made her a fox only because Robin was a fox and making her something else would be “weird”, but I don’t think the wolf cop or the chicken maid or the lion prince were actually meant to represent race.

The best inter species couple is Kermit and Miss Piggy as the Cratchits in A Muppet Christmas Carol, because all their sons are frogs and all their daughters are pigs, as God clearly intended.

there are only two genders: frog and pig

I’ve pointed out to my friends that the fact that Kermit and Miss Piggy’s kids are like that means either

1) they reproduce asexually and the children are clones of each parent OR

2) Kermit and Miss Piggy are members of the same sexually dimorphic species, hence the split between their male and female children

yes I have spent too long running about potential muppet biology

ohgod

Third option, when they want kids they get some fabric and make one, and hope a Hand inhabits it

Do you think there’s a ritual for inviting An Inhabiting Hand to possess the empty husk of your muppet baby?

Just wanted to show u guys that in Muppets Most Wanted, Piggy fantasizes about her and Kermit having babies and this is what they look like

So do with that what you will

Recall that in The Great Muppet Caper, Kermit and Fozzie are brothers. And this was their dad (right):

Thank you for specifying, which one of the two individuals in the picture was the dad haha

I, for one, think Shrek handled interspecies coupling the best. By this I am of course talking about the Dronkeys.

In season 3 of BoJack Horseman, we learn Diane (middle) has been impregnated by Mr. Peanutbutter (left). The fetuses are confirmed to be puppies.

This is the worst addition to this post

I am reminded of Treasure Planet.

In which Captain Amelia (left), an extra terrestrial anthropomorphic cat, had hybrid babies with Doctor Doppler (middle), an extra terrestrial anthropomorphic dog, whom also gave birth to the babies

I always thought that in muppet movies like muppet Christmas Carol the characters are played by the muppets (so kermit is acting and playing the role of Bob rather than being him) so the kids in that film would just be other acting muppets right?

Or is that just something my brain made up?

No it isn’t something you made up. The Framework of the Muppets is that they are actually actors who coincidentally play characters that share their traits and names. Kermit the Frog is played by Kermit the Frog. The Muppet Show was them, as they were, doing their vaudeville style variety show. The Muppet Movie was a fictionalized biopic. And that’s been true of all the movies since then.

it’s confirmed in some of the metacanon for treasure planet as well that delbert and amelia are members of the same sexually dimorphic species, so it’s not a cross-species relationship

also doppler carried the babies, which is fun

my favorite is when Kermit’s facial expression is simultaneously an obvious hand in a puppet but also an instantly recognizable and relatable emotion

It’s getting late maybe we should go back inside

I don’t know what to say for this but it was really fun to do :”)

This fall will see the launch of Disney+ and Apple TV+, widening the ever-expanding playing field of streaming service choices.  It’s a far cry from the days when all you had to do is pick between Netflix and Hulu or just stick with your existing cable provider.  But with so many new choices we’ve arrived right back to what gave birth to the cord-cutting revolution in the first place.  To have access to all the programming you want, you need to subscribe to quite a few different services and those prices add up.

The benefit of a lot of streaming choice is a wealth of programming.  I know I’m excited for Disney+ and its lot of new ‘Star Wars’ series and access to the existing ‘Star Wars’ movies on demand.  Of course, I also have to have access to CBS All Access for ‘Star Trek Discovery’ and the upcoming ‘Star Trek Picard.’.   ‘Game of Thrones’ may have come to a conclusion, but it is a good bet HBO will have more programming that is nerd-worthy soon. Throw-in Hulu and Netflix because they always have some buzz-worthy shows, and you start to get close to what your old cable subscription cost.

The looming potential of all this is a return to illegal downloading. I know, piracy never really went away. But the increased ticket price of getting all the programming you are looking for is bound to drive more people to find ways to avoid those costs. As more people begin to head that direction, the studios behind the services may start to cut back their programming to make up for the lack of assumed subscriptions materializing. The season 8 premiere of 'Game of Thrones’ received 17.4 million legal viewers according to Nielsen ratings. Online piracy data firm Muso says that the same episode was watched illegally 54 million times within 24 hours of broadcast[1]. Not a small difference to be sure and that number was before the on-coming launch of new services.

The other downside of this much choice in the streaming world is that shows will struggle to find their audiences.  Hopefully, streaming providers will learn to adjust their ‘viewers’ data to reflect how their programming is doing compared to other shows on the same service.  That doesn’t seem to be the case, and a lot of potentially great shows end up canceled after one season.  Maybe we’re lucky that we are at least getting the entire first season, versus the days of network television where we might only see a few episodes. With all the choice out there now how can smaller programs develop an audience?

It’s too early to tell what all the new streaming options will do to the industry. We should, as viewers, at least be prepared for the onslaught of new shows to watch (get ready for even less sleep!). One can only watch so many hours of television, though. Can streaming services adapt to the challenges they create? Or will shows suffer from a perceived lack of viewership due to an out-dated ratings system and piracy? It remains to be seen, but I wouldn’t commit too profoundly to any show, at least at first.
