College stress is a notch or two up from high school stress. It’s different than the stress in the world of professional work, too. Learning to deal with college stress requires looking at stressful situations from a slightly different angle than you have in the past. Here are some tips to help you deal with stress when you’re going to college.

1.) Prevent as Much Stress as Possible.

While a lot of stress is unpreventable, you can head off quite a bit of it just by planning ahead. For example, college students get stressed out when they know they have a paper coming due the next day, and they haven’t started on it at all. That kind of stress is preventable. By breaking down a large project like this into manageable chunks and working on it a bit every day for a couple of weeks, you can probably have that paper finished even a couple days ahead of time and not have to worry about whether you’ll be able to turn it in on time. Another example is having enough supplies, like printer ink, on hand to do your work. Your professor isn’t going to accept the excuse that your printer ran out of ink when you try to turn your paper in late.

2.) Take Breaks.

While you’re studying, take five or ten minutes for a break for every half hour or hour you study. Your brain will be better able to focus on the material at hand, and you won’t get so stressed out that you’re having a hard time understanding some of it. Likewise, take breaks for exercise and to be with friends and family during the course of the week. Do something you enjoy doing, such as sewing or biking, to keep your stress level down.

3.) Keep the Goal in Mind.

You’re likely to feel like the world is about to crash in on you when you have three finals in one day coming up. It’s vital that you remember why you’re in college, why you’re doing all this work and studying. You’re doing it to graduate, get a job you enjoy and that can meet your financial needs, and make a positive difference in the world. You may have other goals than these for why you’re going to college. Whatever they are, keep them in mind when you feel stressed by all that you have to do to reach those goals.

4.) Take it a Step at a Time.

You may get overwhelmed thinking about all that you need to do. Break up your projects, your semester, your year, and your college career into pieces that you can digest. If you can see your way to the end of the term, to the end of the year, you’ll be able to see your way to the end of your college career, to the stage at graduation when you get your diploma. Set deadlines for small chunks of big projects that you can reasonably meet. Mark important days like the last day of finals with a night out with friends.

5.) Take Care of Your Health.

Chunk the Ramen noodles into the trash. It doesn’t matter if you’re struggling to make ends meet financially. You need to have some proper nutrition in you if you’re going to manage stress well. You’re more likely to get sick if you don’t eat and sleep well, which only makes stress worse. Get some fruits and vegetables into your grocery cart this week. Cook up a massive batch of healthy soup you can freeze or eat throughout the week. Find creative ways to get the right food and rest that you need.

6.) Get a Support Network, and Help Others.

Sharing your stress with family and friends is a good way to manage it. You can talk about it, and perhaps they can offer you some relief, say, by forming a study group with you to help you study for an upcoming exam. Just having someone listen to you vent about your troubles can make you feel better. You may also feel better being able to help someone else in your circle with a stressful situation. Consider volunteering on campus or in your community to get that helper’s high as well.

College students have to deal with stressors that others do not. If you work on top of going to class, you have even more stress you have to prevent and manage. Just keep the goal in sight, and prevent as much stress as you can to keep yourself well.

This list is just to get you started. Customize it for your purposes, and have a great semester!

Admit it – when it comes to hitting up the dating scene, it’s easy to find yourself frustrated. All you’re looking for is commitment. Yet, somehow the other fish in the sea don’t want to nibble on your fabulousness.

The reality is that it’s not you – it’s them: the guys. About 99.9 percent of them just aren’t ready for commitment. Why, you ask? Too many toxic bachelors and bachelorettes.

1. The freshman

If you’re looking to date a guy or girl in the post-secondary world – good luck. This is their first time away from home and probably their first time away from their first relationship too. They’re hoping to explore and figure out just whom they want in a perfect mate; there is nothing wrong with that. I’d rather have a partner who actually knows what he or she wants. For those commitment-bound, though, it can be disappointing finding that perfect person on campus, only to find out that he may be interested in you…and everyone else.

Yet, there’s a definitely lure to tapping into the barely-legal dating scene. True, you may be flirting with statutory rape danger, but the idea of finding a high-school fling is kind of hot. Remember those days where you would drive to lover’s lane and just make out? Ahh, those “dates” were perfect.

Pros: Fast and fun times on the town.
Cons: Your relationship will last a New-York minute, and the odds of maturity? Um, yeah…

2. The business major

This person is definitely a good-on-paper kind of mate, but beware of what’s hidden. He or she is critiquing your every move and secretly writing it down on a notebook when they get home. Though they may pick up the tab, he or she may be intimidated by your success. After all, he’s the one who wants to bring home the bacon. Talk about sexism.

3. The pre-law type

Unlike the business guy or girl, your law-school beau-to-be is great at stimulating your mind. However, you should expect some arguments in your future. He or she’ll likely present a few “Exhibit A’s” when you fight over the remote. If you’re a member of the all-exclusive Mensa, then maybe you stand a fighting chance. If not, don’t expect to land this guy…unless you’re a defense attorney.

The great part about a lawyer type is that they’re probably really smart, prepared to analyze any case and can probably get you out of a speeding ticket. Who wouldn’t love a quality like that?

4. The journalist

Your secrets are never truly a secret. Everything you say to the journo is “on the record,” and he or she is constantly digging for that exclusive interview.  The odds of you actually enjoying dating a journalism major is slim. Besides, they’re not going to make a lot of money. Do you really want to shack up with that? Ramen noodles are not forever. Diamonds are forever.

The journalist can be fun, though, overall. In their messy world, they can tackle a lot of different responsibilities at once. They know how to research stuff (study buddy, anyone?) The possibilities are endless…again, as long as you don’t expect them to pick up the tab.

5. The Greek life-bound

Their social agenda includes pulling off horrendous pranks, mastering a keg stand and perfecting his beer pong game. Unless your sorority is building a float with him or her at homecoming, the odds of you actually co-mingling, let alone dating, is slim.

Fraternity guys typically flock to sorority chicks. It’s just an unwritten rule.

But if you’re into socials, speakeasies and non-stop talk about your “brothers” and “sisters” in everything Greek, then it really isn’t so bad. His sexual libido is spot on and always ready for a fling. However, it’s too bad he’s still learning what to do with his “tools,” if you know what I’m saying.

6. The grad student

Finally, a man or woman who has some experience but is still fresh and fun. The good part is that you’re likely to be on similar pages in terms of your budding careers. The only flaw is that because you’re fresh into the job scene, the odds of you staying in one place are pretty slim. This is also prime time for moving and other explorations in life.

Pros: This guy or gal could be “the one,” and hey may be able to afford taking you to places worthwhile. Vacations and jewelry aren’t out of the realm of fine possibilities.

Cons: He or she may expect you to commit to him and your career. Sorry, some people still live in the late 1800’s.

Regardless of where you are on the dating world, just keep things fresh and realistic. You need to be sure you’re finding someone who is, as cheesy as it sounds, on the same page as you. Most prospects out of that will led to disappointment. Sorry, ladies. Keep it real and have some fun.

Did your roommate not wash his dishes again? Whose turn is it to clean the bathroom? Conflicts with roommates can ruin your relationship with perfectly nice people if you don’t handle them correctly. When simple problems like those involving housework come up, you need to be able to handle them with maturity and a sense of calm. Here are some tips to help you maintain good relations with your roomies. ·

1) Ask yourself whether the problem is really that big of a deal. If it is something that only bugs you, then maybe you’re overreacting. Do you really want to ruin a relationship with a roommate over whether they turn their music off at 9 or 9:10 p.m.?·

2) Acknowledge the problem to yourself and then bring the situation to your roommate directly. Give yourself time to calm down about the issue before you approach your roomie. Avoid gossiping or talking behind your roommate’s back about the problem. This can only make things worse by creating an atmosphere of distrust and tension. ·

3) Talk to your roommate when you are both calm and have time to deal with the issue. Ask your roommate for a good time to chat. Go into the conversation with a positive attitude, thinking that the conflict can be peacefully resolved. Having this vision in your mind will help you reach an amicable agreement.

4) Give the discussion the time necessary to get it solved. Don’t try to rush the conversation. ·

5) Avoid statements like, “You always (bring guys over to stay the night/forget to put the seat down…)” Try instead, “I feel (fill in the emotion) when you (whatever it is that bothers you).”·

6) Use open body language during the conversation. Avoid crossing your arms. Sit facing your roommate. Look at your roommate in the eyes as he speaks.

 7) Acknowledge your roommate’s feelings about the situation. Don’t jump in with your two cents, making sure to listen carefully. Nod your head, and affirm what she’s saying. Then recap what she said by saying something like, “What I hear you saying is that…Is that right?” This gives your roomie the opportunity to correct any errors in your understanding of her side of the story and helps her feel that you are truly listening. Really listening to someone can defuse a lot of anger from the beginning and keep the conversation focused on the problem at hand.

8) Stay on track with the conversation. Don’t go down rabbit trails and talk about other problems until the original one is solved.

9) Be prepared to compromise. It’s the roommate’s home, too, so you’ll probably need to give a little to find a solution you can both agree to.

10) If necessary, write up a contract or a written agreement so that you both remember what you agreed to in the final solution to the problem. Post this where you both can see it, and refer to it regularly.

11) Look at your own actions as a roommate in the house. See what you do that you think might irritate your roommates. Start changing how you act before you go to your roommate with a problem you have with him. Your changing your behavior might make him aware of his own shortcomings, and he might start acting differently without you having to say anything to him.

12) Get a neutral third party to help you resolve the conflict if you cannot do so on your own. Having an objective eye on the situation and someone to perhaps offer some alternative solutions you hadn’t thought of can be very valuable.

13) Be patient with the situation. If your roommate doesn’t immediately change her behavior, gently remind her of it from time to time if necessary. Maybe she just forgot once or twice to act differently. Give her the benefit of the doubt.

14) When you can’t solve the conflict, acknowledge that it is okay to simply not get along with someone well. When the lease is up, find a new roommate, but try to part on good terms. You can also find a sub-letter to take over your part of the lease if you have to leave before the lease ends.

Having roommates isn’t easy, but you don’t have to live in a tension-filled home. Take proactive steps to solve any conflicts before they get too out of hand.

If you want to earn a high salary straight out of college, you had better pay attention to what major you choose. You probably know that a social science or humanities degree is not likely to earn you the big bucks after graduation.

You definitely want to earn a living wage after college at the least, but if you’re ready to start earning the big bucks right after graduation, then you need to plan ahead and focus your studies on particular subjects. Here are the five best college majors to earn a high salary after you are handed your college diploma, according to an article on Forbes.com by Susan Adams.Adams reported on a survey by Looksharp, a business that manages a website for entry-level and internship jobs called Internmatch.

The survey is called the “2015 State of College Hiring.” The survey clumps broad categories of subjects together and doesn’t include every single major at every college. However, it does give you an idea of the areas of study that are likely to end up with rewarding graduates with high salaries. The top major in the survey for starting salaries is computer science, which has an average starting salary of $66,800. Just behind computer science comes engineering. All types of engineering were included in the engineering category, and the average starting wage is $65,000 annually.

The “mathematics and statistics” category has an average $60,300 starting salary, followed by economics at $58,600 and finance with a starting salary averaging $58,000.These starting salaries reflect the average beginning salaries all over the United States. That is to say, there are big differences in what employers offer in different parts of the country. For example, computer science graduates can earn $85,000 per year out of college in the San Francisco Bay area, which is almost $20,000 more than the national average.

Those computer science students who earned great grades can command over $100,000 to start out in that region. The cost of living is really high in San Francisco and the surrounding vicinity, so keep that in mind. Contrast these numbers with the last on the list, which is social services, which has a new graduate average starting salary of just $34,700, followed by number two on the list, English, at $39,600.History comes in third at $40,300, and then graphic design follows history at $40,700.

Number five from the bottom of the list is the arts with an average starting salary of $41,500. The arts usually comes in at the very bottom of such surveys. The LookSharp survey is not the only survey that ranks college majors by their potential for high salaries for graduates.

PayScale.com listed the top five majors as well. According to BusinessInsider.com, which reported on PayScale’s findings, petroleum engineering offers the highest salary for graduates with a median starting salary of $102,300, and a median mid-career salary of $176,300, which is a 72 percent jump in salary.

Chemical engineering comes in second with a median starting salary of $69,600, and a median mid-career salary of $116,700, which is a 68 percent jump. Computer engineering students can earn a median starting salary of $67,300, with a median mid-career salary of $108,600, which is a 61 percent increase.

Nuclear engineers earn $67,000 as a median starting salary, and they earn a median mid-career salary of $118,800, a jump of 77 percent. Computer science and engineering students can expect a median starting salary of $66,700 and a median mid-career salary of $112,600, which is an increase of 69 percent.

So if you’re planning your career after college, and you want a high salary right after graduation, focus your efforts on getting a degree in computer science or a field of engineering. There is no consensus on the highest-paying college major, but they center on these two areas of study.

Pretty much anything related to math and science is going to bring home the highest salary. If you’re more of a social science or art person, remember that you’re studying those subjects because you really like them, not because of the salary that you’re likely to earn. No matter what you end up studying or what kind of job you have, remember that money doesn’t equal the happiness. Do a job because you like it, not because of the size of your potential pay check.
