SACRAMENTO –ScholarShare, California’s 529 college savings plan, is celebrating National College Savings Month with a College Savings Pledge. Starting today, Tuesday, Sept. 1 through Friday, Sept. 25, Californians who take the pledge will enter for the chance to win one of 20 ScholarShare 529 accounts each in the amount of $500 for their child or loved one. The pledge is aimed at encouraging young children to aspire to go to college – whether that is a community college, four-year university or trade school – and educating parents and guardians about the importance of saving for college and the benefits of California’s 529 plan.

“The great equalizer between the haves and have nots has always been education. However, stagnant wage growth coupled with an explosion in college tuition has pushed that education out of the reach of many California families. Early, steady savings are among the best ways to restore the affordability of a college degree. Parents can open a ScholarShare 529 account with as little as $25 and make a college education – and its many benefits – a real and affordable opportunity for their children,” California State Treasurer John Chiang said.

Now through Friday, Sept. 25, eligible Californians can take the College Savings Pledge at www.CollegeSavingsPledge.com. Twenty winners will be awarded a $500 contribution to a new or existing ScholarShare 529 account, for a California student between the ages of 3 and 14. The teachers of the designated beneficiaries will also receive a $500 Visa gift card, to help support their efforts in inspiring children to dream big and go to college. Additional details about the College Savings Pledge, including the Official Rules, can be found at www.CollegeSavingsPledge.com.

The ScholarShare College Savings Plan is California’s state-sponsored 529 college savings plan, and was recently ranked second in the top direct-sold 529 plans for three-year performance by www.SavingForCollege.com. Since its inception in 1999, ScholarShare has grown to more than 266,000 open accounts with over $6.4 billion in total plan assets. In 2014, ScholarShare helped California families meet their higher education needs, with nearly $300 million withdrawn by families to pay for qualified higher education expenses.

ScholarShare offers a diverse set of investment options, and provides tax-deferred growth and withdrawals free from state and federal taxes when the funds are used for qualified higher education expenses, such as tuition and fees, books or even certain room and board costs. Any U.S. citizen, or resident alien with a valid Social Security Number or Taxpayer Identification Number, can open a new account, for as little as $25. Through ScholarShare’s “Give a Gift” option, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends can open a new account as a gift or make a gift contribution to an existing account. ScholarShare has no annual account maintenance fee, no income limit and offers a high maximum account balance limit.

Before investing in a 529 plan, you should consider whether the state you or your Beneficiary reside in or have taxable income in has a 529 plan that offers favorable state income tax or other benefits that are only available if you invest in that state’s 529 plan.

The tax information contained herein is not intended to be used, and cannot be used, by any taxpayer for the purpose of avoiding tax penalties. Taxpayers should seek advice based on their own particular circumstances from an independent tax advisor. Through the Women’s Policy Institute, a yearlong program of training retreats in Sacramento, we teach women activists and grassroots organizations how to successfully navigate the labyrinth of Sacramento.

During the program, women work in teams to develop and implement specific policy advocacy projects of their choosing with a mentor who is experienced in public policy work. The Women’s Policy Institute has yielded tremendous success. In the first nine years, fellows have contributed significantly to the passage of twenty new laws in the areas of women’s health, safety and economic prosperity. And we’ve only just begun.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP
The Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association (APAPA) is a national non-profit, non-partisan and grassroots organization founded in 2001. APAPA was established with the primary mission of empowering Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Americans in civic and public affairs through education, active participation, and leadership development. APAPA developed voter registration events, internships, scholarships, voter education forums, leadership, and networking programs designed specifically for the education, betterment, and advancement of the API community.
The APAPA-Southern California Region (APAPA-SCR) was established eight years ago to serve the SoCal community. The SCR currently has five chapters (Los Angeles, San Diego, San Gabriel, Youth, and Orange County). APAPA-SCR along with the Los Angeles Chapter, San Gabriel Chapter, and Orange County Chapter are awarding a number of leadership and summer internship positions for current Asian and Pacific Islander college and graduate school students.
The purpose of the internship is to help students better understand California state and local government and to develop future leaders in the API community. Each intern must spend a minimum of 50 hours in the assigned office between July 6 – August 14, 2015, working for a local/state legislator, congress member, or constitutional officer in Southern California. Upon completion of the internship, each intern will be awarded a $500 scholarship. There is also a week-long, all-expense-paid study-tour to Northern California to work and play together national and international student leaders from many other partner organizations.
We would like to invite your students to apply for this comprehensive leadership program. With our positive experience working with your students in the past, we are going to give favorable considerations for your student leaders. We appreciate your help dispersing the application information.
The internship application form can be found at APAPA website: http://apapa.org/scc/tp-apapa-scc.aspx

In the News - LACMA/Hyundai supports Art + Technology

LACMA and Hyundai Motor Company just announced The Hyundai Project - a brand new 10 year partnership in creating a Art + Technology and Korean Art Scholarships. Hyundai will be sponsoring exhibitions that address the intersection of Art + Technology and “champion technology-based artist projects through grants and in-kind support from leading technology companies.”

“For Korean art scholarships, The Hyundai Project will support three exhibitions and multiple publications planned over the next decade, ranging from historic, traditional art forms to new works created by contemporary Korean artists. The Korean Art Scholarship Initiative creates a new platform and model for research in these areas—key aspects of Korean art that have never before been explored on this scale in either exhibitions or books published outside Korea. The exhibitions, currently planned for 2018, 2022, and 2024, will each include international symposia, online scholarly publications, and exhibition catalogues.”

This partnership/support resonates with us as our blog is all about Art + Engineering plus I’m Korean American!  This is a great way for Korean artists to step up and engage in this opportunity.

Scholarships are your ticket to getting out of having to pay for college with student loans. You may even not have to work if you get enough scholarships! If you know where to find scholarships and the right way to apply for them, you may just be able to get your college paid for. Here are some tips to help you get started on the scholarship search and application process.

Finding Scholarships

Finding scholarships is not always easy, but there are plenty of resources available to help you find them. You’ll have to do some serious digging and research to find relevant scholarships, but the effort will be well worth it.

1.) Visit Your Guidance Counselor.

If you’re in high school, visit your guidance counselor. This person should be your first stop on the journey of finding scholarships. He or she has relationships with colleges and knows which scholarships you might be eligible for. If you’re already in college, go by the financial aid office to learn about potential scholarships for which you might be eligible.

2.) Visit the Library.

You can go to the book store to get a book about scholarships that are out there, but you can also often find such books at the public library for free. Make sure you find the latest version of the book. The title of the book often contains the year for which it is relevant. They’re typically published every year.

3.) Search Online.

FastWeb.com and Scholarships.com should be your best friends online when you’re looking for scholarships. Fill out your profile, and then search for scholarships that match. These sites provide eligibility information, application instructions, and contact information for the scholarship organization.

4.) Visit Professional and Civic Organizations Online.

If you or your parents are part of a civic or professional organization, there may be scholarships available to you. You can also find scholarships for students from professional organizations that are in your field of study.

Applying for Scholarships

Once you find the scholarships for which you want to apply, the next step is applying for them. Paying close attention to detail is vital if you’re going to win any scholarships. If you stop paying attention for any length of time, your application will reflect that, and you’ll miss out on college funding.

1.) Read the Eligibility Information Carefully.

The eligibility information should be one of the first pieces of information about a scholarship that you read. This will quickly tell you whether you have a shot of getting the scholarship and can prevent  wasting time applying for a scholarship for which you’re not eligible.

2.) Read the Application Instructions Carefully.

Your application will end up in the trash faster than you can blink if you don’t carefully follow the instructions for each application. Don’t get careless and accidentally submit the essay for one scholarship that was meant for another. Follow each instruction to the letter if you want your application to get serious consideration from the scholarship committee.

3.) Represent Yourself Honestly.

In your application, essays and other application materials, represent yourself as honestly as possible. Speak from the heart in your essays, but don’t overdramatize your life or opinions. Fill in accurate GPAs and class rankings. Chances are that you will be found out if you lie, and you’ll lose your scholarship as a result in most cases.

4.) Double Check Your Application.

Before you turn the application in, make sure that you have included every piece of supporting documentation necessary to complete it. If you don’t have a document, your application may end up in the trash. Don’t expect the scholarship committee to contact you if you are missing something.

5.) Write a Neat Application.

Every document in your application should be completed neatly. It reflects poorly on you and your ability to do well in college if your application is messy or incomplete.

Searching for and applying for scholarships takes maturity and a sense of purpose. If you want someone else to pay for your college, you’re going to have to research and work hard to make  that happen. It’s not impossible by any stretch, but it does require a commitment to see the process through.

Click here for the full guide.

In this guide, I’ll share with you a series of step-by-step mini-guides to answering the top 10 most common scholarship essay question prompts.

How do I know these are the most common scholarship prompts? Because they’re based on a random sample of about 700 scholarship essay prompts analyzed by my friends at the scholarship site Going Merry.

First, we’ll get into questions like:

  • Where do I find scholarships?
  • What are colleges and organizations looking for in a scholarship essay?
  • How do I write a creative scholarship essay that stands out?
  • Can I re-use scholarship essays as college essays (i.e. personal statement or supplemental essays)—and, if so, how?

After that I’ll break down how to write each of the top 10 most common scholarship prompts:

  1. Tell us about you. (Or another very generic bio request)
  2. What impact has sports had on your life? (Or some other athletics-related question)
  3. How have you contributed to your community, or what community service have you provided?
  4. Why do you want to study/pursue [X]?
  5. How are you unique?
  6. Tell us about a time you failed and what you learned from it.
  7. What are your academic and/or career goals?
  8. Tell us about a time when you had a belief or idea challenged.
  9. Why do you deserve this scholarship?
  10. How will this scholarship help you?

This makes my blood boil right through my skin.

If you are a female and the amount of males is deterring you away from a particular field of study, then maybe your motivation and ambition for that area of interest isn’t particularly high. You should probably consider other study options. If you are seriously going to let the gender of other students discourage you in such a way, you really aren’t mature enough to be studying in such an environment. Those other students are there because they are passionate and excited to learn something they love, and you want to demonise them for it because of their gender?

Men aren’t the problem for consistently and overwhelming preferring fields such as engineering and architecture. Why should it be their problem? Why should they be sorry for trying to study and learn about something they love? If anything, females are perpetuating their own problem by not consistently and overwhelming preferring these areas of study (God, I hate the term “male-dominated”). Sitting back and waiting for other females to fill the void is lazy. Complaining about other females not choosing these stereotypically-male career paths is ignorant. You either lead by example, or your opinion means nothing.

(For those of you are curious: I am a female architecture student)

I fully believe that enrolments, scholarships, job proposals, pay rises etc. should be competency based only, with no regard to the gender of the recipient/applicant. I stand by this 100% because that is what gender equality is. Gender equality isn’t filling up quotas to balance female:male ratios because gender equality is giving credit where credit is due without discriminating against their gender (this can also apply to age or racial discrimination). Denying a exceptionally qualified man a job because the company already has lots of men, and instead settling for a lesser qualified woman because of a thinly veiled excuse like diversity, is discrimination.

I do think females need to be more encouraged to be proud of their enjoyment of maths and engineering from an earlier age. I don’t want to see young girls being ashamed of playing with robots and other mechanical toys. Yet with gender targeted scholarships like the ones above, it still sends the message that women aren’t good enough to do it on their own. Nothing is more disempowering, and undermining, than babying females with special treatment. It is condescending.

I want to see women actively seeking these career options because they have a passion for that field of study. Passion is what makes a truly gifted and respectable career woman. You can buy numbers with gender-discriminatory scholarships, but you can’t buy passion.

A few weeks later, but your girl has finally graduated! I made it. School was frying my brain and I was sick and tired of the administration, the people, the faculty…beyond over it. I was ready to leave as soon as I got back Fall 2016. But beyond that fact, I grew as an individual and picked up new skills and met tons of people in the past two years of undergrad, which I will never regret. Hopefully someday curate into something big, something cool. But nevertheless, its over, and I am very hype for the next chapter: T A I W A N. Click that link to see my new blog and read more on what I am doing there.

I will still be posting here, but I will dedicate this blog more to personal stories along with other random posts I decide to write along the way.

So get ready, for another long written post of adventures to come. I have exactly 3 weeks until departure and here are some things I need to accomplish before I leave:

  • Build a computer for my mother
  • VisitArtechouse
  • Attend a Bicycle spinningclass
  • Visit the Doctor
  • Visit the Dentist
  • Visit the Eye Doc
  • Obtain my Driver’s License?
  • Backup my files
  • Create Hair Product Mixture
  • Invest in Travel Credit Card?
  • Buy a new camera?
  • Update Website

I got the scholarship! I am even more hype for my summer plans in Taiwan now.

image

I received the Global Ambassador Scholarship which exposes students to Taiwanese Culture and Language through cultural excursions, to home-stays, and even a language buddy. There’s still some time to apply. Applications close on March 31st so get yours in as soon as you can. This scholarship program is only eligible for US citizens. Also, if you don’t have a passport, go ahead and get one right now. Especially if you do hear the good news, you need to give yourself at least 6 to 8 weeks to get your passport in on time before departure.

In other news, I’ve also submitted my Taiwanese Huayu Enrichment Scholarship scholarship by mail. There’s still time to apply for this scholarship as well. Check out the online guidelines for details. The deadline is also March 31st and for this one, you have to mail in your documents. I am pretty sure the items have to be in their office by this date, not mailed by this date. Once you send in your items, wait a week and give them a call to make sure that they received your documents. Especially if items are coming from separate locations. They have a general info website here and if you’re applying from the US, you can learn more about the scholarship info needed here.

Good luck to everyone during this application season.
