How this picture piques my curiosity, how wonderful it would be to know more about the affectionate pair portrayed in such casual, dishevelled intimacy. A white top hat, and a scruffy cap - what a contrast! My imagination works overtime, wild and unlikely theories; they are Dickensian rogues, up to some tricks : pickpockets - that hat is stolen. Or they are inebriated after an evening out and think a photograph a splendid idea, propping one another up as the drink takes its toll on their balance, and the photographer wishes he had not answered the door so late. Maybe they were lovers, more intimate even than the picture records, or perhaps they were relatives, the country cousin come to stay with the dapper dandy. All speculation, alas.

What a splendid hat! The voluminous ruffles! It has certainly caused genuine amusement for this pair of Edwardian gents.
(I have still not found a vintage top hat which fits me, I’m coming to the conclusion I have an unusually shaped head, as the harder kind of bowler hats and velvet hunt-style riding caps are never the right dimensions either.)

I’m not sure which ought be my favourite curious detail of this 19th century studio photograph; the fact one gent has come wearing a top hat but in his patterned carpet slippers, or the assistant accidentally walking into shot from the right and becoming part of their portrait!

Two beautifully bearded gentlemen in magnificent hats (white so rarely seen in these pictures, I believe this may be my first?), and while it is a crying shame to draw your attention away from such very handsome faces, do note the pockets apparently on the wrong side of their coats - this was printed as a mirror image of the original scene.

This one was fun to build. It is an ultra-tiny robot workshop with a man hard at work building and repairing robots. It is made almost exclusively from tiny watch parts. Some of the features, such as the tools on the table, are a little hard to discern. I took most of the pictures without the glass but the final piece is closed with a piece of glass on the front. Enjoy!

‘This Is My Snake Dress…’

How excited was I when the invitation arrived for my climactic Summer Wedding and it was Victorian themed!

I pieced most of this outfit together with items I already owned, how strange to think my present clothing choices could be so closely linked to our silhouettes of the past…Although, it seems anyone with a penchant for a peplum, may be closer to our ancestors than they think…

You can find out where I drew inspiration and view the whole outfit on my blog at… thegirlwiththecopperkettle.blogspot.co.uk
