I finished making my new book and had a bit of free time before it actually gets printed and has to be sold and promoted. So we decided to go on a short trip to Hokkaido as we have not been there yet but are interested in its atmosphere, architecture, and trams (we love us some trams).
I also wanted to use it as a reference gathering opportunity for some yet unspecified future projects. It’s always good to expand the reference library.
To add even more excitement to the trip, we decided to try the ferry that goes from near Tokyo to Hokkaido overnight. As we had a lot of time during the trip, I tried to do some sketching in a thin MD Paper notebook I brought with me. I’m also getting ready for this year’s Inktober, so I wanted to try new styles and techniques of drawing only with ink lines. I have been researching this a lot lately but been too busy to draw anything.
During the ferry trip, I managed to draw three sketches with my LAMY Safari fountain pen. A view on our cabin, and two sketches of what we were able to see from our small piece of the ship’s deck.
I like this style, even though I still don’t feel comfortable drawing with only lines. What I think I will try next will be adding some ink washes to use bits of my watercolors knowledge here too and make stuff pop a bit more. What I think these drawings need is more depth so they can be more readily understandable.

After exploring Arches national park, we decided to drive in Colorado, unplanned. We were about 30 minutes from the border so took a scenic, but long drive down the Colorado river. We made it past the border and ticked off our fifth state! And then went to McDonald’s.
We decided we had to do more than visit Macdonalds in Colorado so we stopped at a coffee shop for some tea to refuel and then drove to Colorado’s National Monument. Once again unbeatable scenery
After we watched the sun fully rise we headed back to Brenda the tour wagon and drove around the park to some more spots. By this time it was about 8am and we were ready for our second breakfast and a nap. We warmed up in the wagon and then took a long walk around some more of the park.
