FromPracticing Mediocrity

[transcript:

1. “Writing is not something that you finish. Art is not something that you get done and over with. It’s one of those things that haunt you–it’s not a day’s work or a week’s worth or even a decade’s work. It’s a life’s work. This means that, if you really care about something, then you have all the time you need to do it. It means that you should try to do a mediocre job, that you should never try to satisfy your present day demons, because you are less interested in them than a life’s trajectory. Mediocrity is hard to hold. There are only some people who are allowed to be mediocre. Men are allowed to be mediocre. White men especially. This is because mediocrity is a necessity to creativity and white men arg the ones who have been allowed this necessity. For those of us who were trained to overachieve, allowing ourselves mediocrity means that we are also allowing ourselves to create.”

2. “This is because, to practice mediocrity is also to practice consistency. You must never allow yourself only to be mediocre once. You have to try, try, as hard as you can, to be mediocre constantly. Allowing yourself mediocrity everyday is about freedom. It is about allowing yourself the pleasure of getting through something without feeling that you must work harder than anyone else or that you must prove yourself to be more exceptional than anyone else. It’s about allowing yourself the pleasure of just doing something for the sake of doing it.” /end]

PSA: Just a friendly reminder that whenever you start a creative project, you will invariably hit a phase where the Thing™️ appears horrendous and you start asking existential questions. But if you keep working, it invariably passes and starts to resemble something less like the devil’s vomit. Doesn’t matter if it’s art, writing, or what–this happens repeatedly. Carry on.

“Usually my projects are made in leap-frog fashion. What that means is that I’ll be writing [The Rain People], and I write, and I write, and then there comes a point where I have this enzyme secreted which makes you hate what you’re writing. And then you eventually abandon it, and say, ‘I hate it, it’s no good’- and then you start another one, and then the same thing happens. You work on it and work on it, and after a while you start to hate it, then you abandon it, and you look at the other one that you had abandoned, and you go ‘you know, that wasn’t so bad!’ Then you take it, and you make it.”

I created another masterpiece by myself, a perciver fanfic but how the fck do I translate my own work into English?

What a pain.

It looks so good in my native language, and I think I will ruin it if I use my broken grammar to translate it into English, but at the same time I want to share with you guys so much.

Guess it’s the time for me to take lessons

I could look over it with google translate and then add some proper grammatical changes to make it look better! (Only bc google translate sometimes sucks with translating and doesn’t make some words make sense)

Only if you want to of course!

jeeeeez thanks Hector! (I hope I’m not calling the wrong name)

I really appriciate ur help! Well, I think I’ll translate it into English by myself and some help from Google translate, so it’ll not be a heavy work to you, then I’ll send it to you.

I guess this is definitely a good choice for you to help me make it look more better in English version. You’re such a kind person, I really appreciate so much.

That is sooo awesome!

When I started to write fanfiction for perciver last year I was also concerned because English isn’t my native language and I also let a tumblr friend read through my creations before publishing them.

It really helped to see what I wrote and their corrections next to eachother and learn from it.

It’s a big boost in confidence.

To see that Percy and Oliver or any other fictional characters bring people together and make creators of all kind work on their skill and learn new things is just amazing.

My English isn’t perfect but should anyone want me to pre-read any fanfiction or something similar I would be happy to help.

shoutout to slow creators!

i know it can be disheartening to work so slowly when it seems like everyone around you works so fast and churns out great content left and right. i know it’s easy to get frustrated with yourself for having to spend so much time on one thing and sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated long enough to finish. but the things you make are so good, and taking lot of time on something isn’t a bad thing. creation can be a very painstaking process, but the amount of love and care and effort and attention you pour into your work bleeds through. people can feel it. they appreciate it. they see how hard you try and they see how your thoughtful approach to creation affects the quality of the end product. speed is definitely a skill you can develop and chances are as you practice more and get more comfortable with things, you’ll be able to work faster. but no matter what, the things you make are worth waiting for. keep creating! you are wonderful!

Like many people in the midst of this social distancing, I’ve decided to try my hand at making sourdough bread. A few weeks ago I began making my starter, feeding it every day and watching it grow. Since then, I’ve tried making a few loaves - some more successful than others! The last one I made was the best yet, but there is definitely still some room for improvement. I think next I will try scoring the bread a little bit deeper, and using less steam for a slightly harder crust.

If you’ve had the time and energy, what have you been creating?

Sooo I’m pretty happy with my job! The kids are great and I’m excited to put everything into this and have fun.
Since it’s my job to teach these students and create dances & shows, I guess I’m adulting… It feels weird that I have to adult everyday!!
I freakin LOVE routine but it scares me and I HATE routine!! Routine usually equals adult 9-5 status But maybe this is fun and I’m suppose to be doing it!?

I’m lesson planning right now ‍♀️ also pondering my entire future as a “dance educator” !!!

I HAD NO IDEA THAT FOAMSMITHING ARMOR WAS THIS HARD. Honestly, I breezed through the sword, crown, and shield. They were laborious but not difficult, in my opinion. So going into the bodice creation, I had high hopes. Thought I could just wrap my mannequin and take the patterns from that. FIRST MISTAKE. I should have wrapped my body, not my mannequin (and she was sized out to my dimensions, but still didn’t work). After cutting out the foam and creating the bodice, it felt and looked like a foam tube. No curves, no waistline. As a seamstress, that irritated me. I’m so used to tailored to perfecction with fabric and thread. That’s much harder to do with foam and glue. Then I struggled getting the boob cups to work, finally figured that out. Then I just started chopping up the foam base until it fit like a stiff corset. Also decided to add a corset back instead of the zippered back that I thought about doing. Smart move.

So first round LOOKED nice. It really did, the worbla covered foam was all the trim parts and on the mannequin, photographed well. Then I tried it on and it was so heavy, bulky, ill-fitting, and just not comfy. I thought then this CAN’T be how all foam armor is. So I ripped it apart. Basically wasting all that worbla (my wallet screamed when I did that). I was so upset that I just couldn’t do anything right with this bodice. So I sat down, researched more foam amor and re-designed the trim again.

Wrapped her up again and drew out a much smaller trim work for top and bottom.

Literally became a night and day difference. I LOVE the look and feel of the new trim. Fits and is so much lighter. This is literal proof that you don’t need to splash worbla on everything to make it fancy. Foam works naked too. Also

**Insert cosplay wisdom**
It’s totally ok to restart and do it again. If you don’t like the look or feel of the project, start over. This is YOUR project, not someone else (unless its a commission, then you should do your best). Make it yours and make it so! (Picard pun intended).

In other news, I’m coming to Canada! Edmonton Expo to be exact. I’m going to be a cosplay guest there 22nd-24th of September. I’m so hyped because I’ve never been to Canada. I do hear it is beautiful and I hope to snap a couple of photoshoots up there.

Before Canada, I’m going to Gen Con. My favorite con of the year. Seriously, it’s great. Except lots of posts. It will also be Queen Amidala’s last spot of this year’s competition route. Hoping to bring home some bacon with this one. TBH this year hasn’t been as successful in the competition arena as I hoped with Amidala. A couple weeks ago at D23, I had the honor to be a finalist for the competition but I really thought the outcome would have been different. But oh well, probably not gonna do that competition again. It’s not as organized as I thought it would have been. A 30 second prejudge session with the judges is insulting to the costuming world itself. Wasn’t a fan of that. But cheers to GenCon and upcoming things. PEACE!

Wonder Woman is KILLING ME…but not really, OH I’m heading to Canada! I HAD NO IDEA THAT FOAMSMITHING ARMOR WAS THIS HARD. Honestly, I breezed through the sword, crown, and shield.

zorlok-if:

A Gentle Reminder

I always try to keep things positive, but I saw something tonight which really upset me and felt the need to say this.

For most writers, interactive fiction stories are free passion projects. Hobbies which we engage in simply because we want to. Writers should never feel bad if they aren’t finding the time to write or meeting deadlines that they’ve set for themselves. By the same token, people have no right to demand content or complain about how long it takes to produce something.

There are some people who write at a breakneck pace or who are able to make a living just writing IF, but readers can’t hold all writers to the standards of outliers. Sometimes writers don’t have time to write, no matter how much they may want to. Writers should never feel guilty for this and people shouldn’t try to make them feel guilty either. Sending authors rude anonymous asks is not productive and I imagine they aren’t particularly satisfying for the people who ask them. All they are is upsetting to those who receive them.

If the goal of an ask is to spur a writer to complete work faster, being negative and demanding is not an effective way to accomplish this.

If there is any way to help a writer produce content faster - and again, if - then it’s by supporting them and cheering them on. Not anonymously making them feel bad for not creating something at a speed that’s to your liking.

If you want to encourage a writer to write, then support them.

You can do that through nice asks, reblogging their posts, sharing their stories with friends, rating their games highly (if they’ve released them), or even tipping them on ko-fi/supporting their patreon (if they have one). Positive interaction - in general - works wonders. Let them know how excited you are, share your positive comments with them, or just gush about whatever thoughts you have on their game. That’s how you help motivate people. Not by trying to make them feel bad. If you’re uncomfortable with the social aspect of this, that’s what anon is for.

But, if people are nice to an author, that doesn’t mean they’re owed anything. It might still be a while before readers see more content, but that’s no reason to stop being supportive. Again, these are free projects that writers choose to share.

Writers don’t owe anything to anyone but themselves.

Now there are times for criticism if it’s constructive or warranted, but entitled complaints are neither of these things. Don’t be negative if you don’t have to be. It doesn’t help anything and it’s not a productive use of anyone’s time.

Being kind and respectful doesn’t cost anything. It’s just a choice. You can either choose to upset someone or choose to make someone’s day and, with that, help make our community a better place.

To the vast majority of readers who already support authors and respect the content that they create, thank you. We appreciate you so much. If you want, try challenging yourself to be even more vocal and outspoken with you support. It will only help.

And to any writers reading this who may be feeling bad about project timelines, you have no reason to be. Complete your work however you need to at whatever pace works for you and your life. You’re wonderful and talented and valid no matter how fast you put out content, how much interaction you see, or what someone says. You are creating art and that is something to be immensely proud of. Keep doing whatever’s best for you. The vast majority of us support you with no expectations. ❤️

2018, what a year it’s been so far!

I had an accident in February & broke my knee cap which needed surgery to repair it. It’s been a long road to recovery but I’m just about getting back to normal. I haven’t been posting lately, however I’ve still been busy creating & painting.

I’ve lots of new work to share with you all & I also have some very exciting news regarding one of my illustrations ‘A Quilt of Honey Bees’ being used on the labelling & branding for a lovely German honey company called ‘Bee Loved’.  Pics to follow very soon! xx
