#otd, 100 years ago, Theodore Roosevelt died at @sagamorehillnhs, in New York. When he ascended to the presidency in 1901 he was the youngest person to do so and ushered in a progressive era of reform. Part of that wave of reform was his work in preserving the scenic and historic wonders of this country as part of the future National Park Service. In Teddy’s words: “Leave it [wilderness] as it is. You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it. What you can do is to keep it for your children, and for all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American… should see.“ To me, he remains the perfect example of a progressive American president who worked toward the common good. He is a complicated figure, for sure, but his contributions to enshrining American identity in wilderness are incomparable to any other American politician. Thank you, Teddy.

Sagamore Hill is probably my favorite “Presidential Home” or “Historical Home” unit in the NPS. The tour is spectacular there and everything is wonderfully preserved. There’s nothing quite like standing in Teddy’s office or Grand Hall and seeing his belongings and books and imagining him entertaining and talking to John Muir in that very room. Happy #NationalBirdDay! Bird watching is one of my pastimes and living next to @evergladesnps makes that endeavor all the more fruitful. I don’t think it’s a surprise to anyone that EVER’s Barred Owls are among my favorite subjects to photograph, among others. When I was in 4th grade I wanted to be an ornithologist. 20 years later…. it didn’t exactly happen but I’m still happy that my love of owls endures.

If you visit the @usfws Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge in Utah, look out for the birds. They can be very…gull-able.

This refuge in Utah is an oasis for water birds and wildlife. The refuge protects the marshes found at the mouth of the Bear River – the largest freshwater component of the Great Salt Lake ecosystem – and provides critical habitat for over 250 species of migratory birds that move through the area annually by the millions to rest and feed.

Land of the midnight…moon?

In the winter, the sun stays below the horizon for a large part of the day at Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. During these short December days, the refuge only sees slightly more than 2 hours of sunlight with longer periods of twilight.

The rich wetlands of the Yukon Flats provide some of the most productive waterfowl breeding areas in North America. It is estimated that 1.5 million ducks breed here annually.

The animals that remain here year-round — moose, wolves and wolverines — depend on their thick coats and honed skills to survive the cold and darkness.

You booked the tickets. You packed your bags. You head out to your destination to take those epic Arches National Park photos only to find yourself in the middle of a blizzard. :(

If you are doing some holiday traveling to any public lands sites, “Know Before You Go.” Don’t get caught out in the cold and have a plan for your public lands adventure.

#TeamPublicLands Tip: Check agency or park websites prior to arrival. Stop by a contact station before you set out to learn about fees, pick up permits, and most importantly check that weather forecast.

It’s happy dance season at Cosumnes River Preserve in California. Whenever the sandhills fly in for the winter, everyone puts on their dancing shoes.

Nestled in the heart of California’s Central Valley, the preserve is a critical stop on the Pacific Flyway for migrating and wintering waterfowl. Over 250 species of birds have been sighted on or near the preserve, including sandhill cranes.

Gray-colored birds with red caps, sandhill cranes stand up to 5 feet tall and have a wingspan of 6-7 feet. They fly in for winter to fatten up and perform acrobatic mating dances. It’s an amazing sight to behold.

Many of our favorite nature escapes, like Great Smoky Mountains National Park seen here, are moving into winter operations. While most public lands spots will remain open, certain areas within may close for the season. Don’t get left out in the cold and “know before you go.” Check park or agency websites prior to your arrival and know what is and isn’t open for the season.

Roseate spoonbills aren’t flamingos. Any questions?

Why are they pink?

Great question! The pink coloration of the rosy spoonbill feathers is caused by an abundance of carotenoids present in the food the birds eat. As the spoonbill ages, the carotenoids accumulate from all of the aquatic animals it has eaten and the pink coloration becomes darker.

The attractive feathers used to attract a breeding mate also attracted plume hunters and poachers in the 1800s that used the feathers to make fashion pieces such as ladies’ hats. By the 1930s, poaching and low reproductive success rates led spoonbill population numbers to drop to an estimated 30 breeding pairs. Conservation efforts by the federal government, as well as private citizens and organizations helped save the species and the population of roseate spoonbills has bounced back.

On the first Saturday of December, the Civil War historic site at Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland, holds their annual Memorial Illumination event.

Over 23,000 luminaries will light the battlefield this evening–each luminary representing a casualty from the Battle of Antietam that took place on September 17, 1862.

The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederacy’s first major invasion of the North and gave President Abraham Lincoln the opportunity to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

From the battlefields to the home front, the cost of the war was steep and its lessons eternal. It’s hard to imagine the horror that ravaged this Maryland community when you walk the now peaceful fields. Today, these Civil War historic sites help us better understand our tragic past.

Baby fox kisses = mood improved

Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge in Delaware protects one of the largest remaining expanses of tidal salt marsh in the mid-Atlantic region and provides excellent habitat for a terrific variety of wildlife. The refuge is home to eagles, hawks, ducks, geese, and litters of cute baby fox or kits.

Dependent on their mothers through the spring and summer, fox kits will become independent in autumn. With excellent hearing, quick reflexes and sharp wits, it won’t be long before these little fuzzies turn into skilled hunters.
