Nope, these are not sandy beaches and crystal clear blue waters of some far flung destination. You are looking at the shores of Lake Michigan after hiking up some of the sand dunes at @sleepingbearnps. Go Find Adventure Wherever You Are.

Moab Adventure.

Dead Horse State Park.

Amazing State Park. The views are amazing. To get to the park you take the road that takes you to Canyonlands but it’s just the left on the route. So it’s perfect to stop to on the way to Canyonlands.

Canyonlands National Park.

Yet again another breath taking park. You have two sections to the park called Island in the Sky and the Needles. Island in the sky is more of just view points but the needles in where the good hikes are. Go see!

Grandstaff trail (morning glory arch)

MOST FAVORITE HIKE OF MY LIFE…so far. It’s an easy hour in and hour out about 4 hours total. The hike leads you through a canyon following a little creek with an arch at the end. Beautiful hike seriously go do it if you’re in Moab. It’s located right in castle valley

Colorado National Monument.

Well here’s a story. I’m glad I stopped here it was very pretty BUT they didn’t tell you that the road is closed at the end of the park where it should lead you back to the highway. So I was pretty frustrated I had to backtrack 20 miles to get out of the park. A neat place but wish the ranger gave me a heads us about the road.

More photos to come!

Adventure on!

As your rolling through the flat landscape to the national park you can spot the sand dunes from miles away. Quite amazing how where the grasslands of Colorado meet the mountains. This mound of brilliant golden sand piles for miles and meets half the height of the surrounding mountains.

Here is the site to the National Park that you’ll find helpful

https://www.nps.gov/grsa/index.htm

The dunes lie north of Alamosa, CO. We camped right outside the park at the former San Luis State Park. Its FREE to camp here and although is pretty barren its got an amazing view of the mountain range surrounding the sand dunes and has a little lake. Due to the prevailing winds that keep the dunes in check its contently windy here so keep that in mind!

The best part of this place? Climbing the dunes of course! You feel like a child in an adult sandbox. You can of course slide down the dunes but they do not supply any sleds at the national park. Besides the dunes there are some amazing hikes on the San Luis Valley on the western base of the Sangre de Cristo Range. Here you’ll find strenuous hikes to alpine lakes and waterfalls.

Please message me with any question you may have about this park.

Photos to be posted.

The Lakota called it “mako sica” and the trappers had their own word for it “les mauvaises terrestrial à traverser” two different words, two different groups but one translation “bad lands.” The badlands were once a shallow sea, now the remains of the past lie scattered across the land with 35 million year old fossils, rock spires, pinnacles, a scorching sun, artic winters, bone chilling wind, rugged buttes, dusty siltstone, shale, sandstone, volcanic ash and a wonderland for adventure.

Yellowstone National Park was the first National Park in the US. It was also the first National Park in the world and
for good reasons. With it’s thermal pools, wildlife, steam vents, mud pots, hot springs and geysers, Yellowstone is a very unique place. Rush hour in Yellowstone is caused by wildlife, there are over ten thousand thermal features and 500 of which are geysers. You feel
as if you are on a battlefield with steam vents, bubbling water and geyers shooting hot water up into the air all around you.
My brother and I played a game when we were young called “lava.” We would pretend the entire living room was filled with lava and we couldn’t touch the ground or we would die. So we would hop from one couch to another, over to the table, climb onto the chair and rock the chair backwards into a beanbag chair and so on. When the 5 of us were checking out the geyser basins that
was the first thing that popped into my head. With signs of death and warning of 200 degree water, it felt like real life “lava.” Heading east for the first time this trip > to the Badlands!

Oregon was one of the states that we were really looking forward to. We pulled up to our campground around dusk after a scenic ride through beautiful winding mountain roads coming from Lake Tahoe. Our campsite was nestled right next to Diamond Lake. We set up camp and cooked our first meal as the sun was setting over the gigantic snow capped mountain that lives across the clear blue lake. Our neighbors informed us that we just missed a hailstorm and the temperature would be a record low that night, dropping below 40. We broke out our wool blanket and heavy socks in preparation for the chilly mountain air.

The following morning we woke up in clouds of heavy fog. Being the optimistic people that we are we headed to Crater Lake. Needless to say we couldn’t see five feet in front of us, let alone the beautiful unbelievably blue lake. So we headed north for some waterfalls and of course we weren’t disappointed. The green of Oregon’s forests with raging blue clean water is an unmatchable combo. Umpqua National Forest was a great area to explore. With four waterfalls and hot springs all within a 20 mile stretch it wasn’t hard to fill our entire day in the lush green forest.

The next day we headed to Crater Lake. Instead of writing about our experience at this incredible lake, I’d like to tell our personal favorite story of how the Lake came to be. We came across this story while reading “Your Guide to the National Parks.”

Mount Mazama had a cataclysmic eruption about 8,000 years ago. This cataclysmic eruption caused the mountain to collapse into itself forming a massive caldera.
The Makala Indians tell the story of an epic battle between Llao, Chief of the Below World and Skell, Chief of the Above World. Llao on one of his visits to Mount Mazama fell in love with one of the villagers. Llao promised the pretty young villager enteral life if she would come and live with him below Mount Mazama. The girl refused Llao’s offer which enraged the Chief of the Below World. Llao took his rage out on the village and started to destroy everything in sight. Skell, Chief of the Above World, seeing this from standing atop Mount Shasta decided to help the villagers. The epic battle between Llao and Skell ended in fiery destruction. Skell finally drove Llao back into the underworld through Mount Mazama where the battle took place all night. The next morning Mount Mazama was gone and all that was left was a gigantic gaping hole to the underworld. The following months after the epic battle was filled with torrential downpour which filled the void and created Crater Lake.

GO: From the tropical south to the frozen north

Part Eight: Daisetsuzan to Tokyo

Our journey home began high in the mountains of Daisetsuzan National Park and ended back where we started, at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. Read on to follow the final leg of our journey, that in just seven days took us from tropical Okinawa to icy Hokkaido.

image
image

Wild Hokkaido: expansive landscapes define Japan’s northern isle, where the lowest population density of all 47 prefectures puts nature at the fore.

Leaving Mount Kuradake just as the light began to fade, our drive from Daisetsuzan National Park to Asahikawa Airport took us through Hokkaido’s characteristic rural landscape. Towering rock faces and forested peaks soon give way to broad horizons, where remote towns and snow-covered farmland fill expansive valleys. In Hokkaido, nature takes centre-stage and any road-trip through the prefecture’s breath-taking scenery is endlessly rewarding.

image
image

Hokkaido soft serve: No trip to Japan’s chilly northern tip is complete without sampling the country’s finest, and freshest, ice-cream.

Our journey through Japan had been made possible only by ANA’s extensive domestic flight network, making travel between the country’s far-flung prefectures staggeringly easy. Much like catching a train, each leg of our journey had proved speedy and hitch-free, with our final flight transporting us from remote Ashaikawa in central Hokkaido, back to bustling Tokyo in under two hours.

But whilst the journey was swift, we found time before boarding for one final taste of the region – a tub of creamy Hokkaido soft-serve – made using local milk, and arguably Japan’s tastiest ice-cream.

image

With our flight home to London departing the following morning, our last night in Japan was spent at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, watching planes come and go from Excel Hotel Tokyu’s perfectly positioned bedroom windows. Heaven for plane-spotters, Excel Tokyu’s rooms overlooking Haneda airport’s domestic runway put guests nose-to-nose with the action, where watching Terminal Two’s busy comings and goings proves surprisingly mesmeric.

Last November, We Are Japan took a seven-day trip – exploring the country’s most remote corners to discover sand and soba, skiing and snow crab all in one week. Follow our trip over the coming weeks as we track our journey from the tropical south to the frozen north.
