“Vortigern’s fate”

An illustration I wanted to do since almost two years now : young Merlin watching the epic, prophetic fight between the red and the white dragon that were sleeping under the hill on top of which King Vortigern wanted to build his tower.
Arthurian legends and Britain’s mythology are an awesome source of inspiration. AND a great excuse to paint over-the-top dragon fights.

The Darkest Hour p. 102

Uther Pendragon has called in an abbess to deal with Morgana…

<< Previous – Start

Uther: “She has the evil eye! She makes things die just by looking at them.”

Uther: “I want you to – to exorcise her. She is not to return to court until she has ceased to be a threat to those around her.”

Ygraine: “My daughter is not some kind of demon, reverend mother. She is a fay. Magic happens around her as it happens around me.”

Abbess: “But the princess’s magic is…

Ygraine: “Oh, my darling little one – please don’t be upset. Everything will be fine.”

[Morgana throws Uther Pendragon a look that worries him.]

…I don’t need this Uther at all for the page I’m working on, but - yes, I do enjoy drawing a scrumptious Uther from time to time.

I’ve remembered that sketching with colour pencils is really pleasant, so I’ve gone back to it :).

The Darkest Hour p. 97

How Not To Talk To Fairy (or Any Other) Women - a demonstration by Uther Pendragon, High King of all Britons :p.

<< Previous – Start

Ygraine: “I am meeting Marcus Cunumorus. He, I believe, cares about my people.”

Uther: “And you, I trust, care enough to extend your gift of plenty to all my domains. We will need it come harvest time.”

Ygraine: “No, I – I can’t. I won’t. I made a gift of love to Gorlois -“

Uther: “I believe a fairy wife owes her husband a blessing. And I am your husband now. Please,…

i just finished “sins of the father” and like. every time that episode rips my fucking heart out, every single time, no matter what, but this time

what got me is that, during the sword fight, there are at least two separate instances where uther actually lunges instead of parrying.

uther states he does not wish to fight his son. of course, when arthur attacks, he defends his own life– that is instinct. but uther is, arguably, as good a swordsman as arthur– he is also the king, and knows leon was just outside the doors. within those two parameters, he had every opportunity to either defend himself until arthur’s anger subsided or until he could subdue arthur by other means.

like i said, though. there are two separate instances (possibly more) where uther actively goes to strike his son.

i am not in the headspace right now to rewatch, so i don’t know for certain if they were attacks meant to disarm, but i am fairly sure they were not. if i remember correctly, one of them was a true attack swing. they are not highlighted, they’re super quick, but they’re there.

which brings me to the knowledge– the not surprising knowledge– that uther would have, if he had the chance, killed his own son to preserve not only his life, but his lie.

and i know it’s… a lot to compare the actions of a fictional character with ones of real people, and vice versa. but i know narcissistic abusers well. and i know the lengths they will go to preserve their own narrative– the ones in which they are the victim, in which they are faultless, in which they are right. and, in doing so, anyone standing in their way– including their own children– is merely a casualty of war.

all i am saying is– i have been on the other end of that sword. and god, it fucking hurts.

MERLIN

I actually think I’m going to stop watching this series. Apart from it being bad overall it becomes worse and worse with the plot from episode to episode.

I’ve finished “Lamia”, s4, ep 8 and it was absolutely awful.

The plot holes are getting bigger: why Agravaine wants to stop looking for the knights? If it’s Arthur he wants dead why does he care about the knights?

The Guenevere’s character? She did nothing in the whole episode. Who were this people and how did she get to know them? Who knows? She didn’t kill Lamia, Arthur did. So where was the moment when she saved Merlin’s life? Idk.

The knights being bitches. Yes they were enchanted (don’t really know how but who cares right?). But when they got better nobody apologized to Merlin who was the only voice of reason there and helped them not get killed.

And last but not least. Arthur. Character development? Don’t know her. Why does he treat Merlin like that? Why? It has no sense whatsoever.

It is also so tiresome that nobody knows about Merlin’s powers. It was engaging first few seasons but now it has no sense and is more irritating than funny.

All in all awful episode. Awful characters. Character degradation form episode to episode. Boring plot. And a lot of plot holes. Would not recommend to a friend.

MERLIN

So I’ve been wondering how during literally every episode Arthur or Uther are almost killed and the only thing keeping them from dying is Merlin.

So before Merlin came to Camelot did it look the same? Like they were harmed/poisoned every other day? Like were they thinking that they are just very unlucky?

And when Merlin appeared in their lives and started saving them did they just assume that they got better at protecting themselves?

They would be like “ah yes the luck has came back to us we are so great” while Merlin is like “b i t c h”

repmet:

I forgot how much fun this was.
