Now that we are in the drink section of the menu, let’s start with the most important element of any kissaten: the coffee. Some kissa only have one or two variations of coffee, while some have pages of different grains, blends and brewing methods. The latter tend to call themselves 珈琲店 (coffee shop) more, while still fitting in the kissa category. They also offer much better coffee than standard kissa.
Kissaten coffee is almost never espresso based. Before moving to Japan and going on my kissa hunt, I barely drank any coffee that wasn’t espresso-based, and would normally go for latte or cappuccino. Espresso is a relatively new concept in Japan, so if you go to a 純喫茶 (traditional kissa), coffee will normally be brewed by the hand-drip method or the syphon method. It can be served hot or iced, but ice coffee usually has less choice.
In kissa, but also in any coffee grain shop (I make my own coffee at home every morning), they categorise grain by mildness, roasting level and acidity/bitterness balance. Most people like balanced coffee leaning on bitter, while I am a sour coffee fan (for drip coffee). At home, I normally drink coffee first thing in the morning, so I put cream in it for my poor stomach, but if my stomach is not empty, I prefer drinking my coffee black, like you’ll see on my coffee pictures collection (reblog). Also, beware of the “milk” or “cream” they give you in cafés here, as it is almost always liquid creamer (not cream!). That’s why my outfit is all brown with touches of cream, because I usually do not put it in.

Royal milk tea is a popular drink in Japanese cafés, not just in kissaten. The difference between standard milk tea and royal milk tea is that the latter is brewed directly in milk in a pan, like chai (but without the spices). It is sometimes served with whipped cream, sometimes with cinnamon (called a cinnamon royal milk tea on the menu). It is normally served hot, but some kissatens offer an iced version.
The name and concept of royal milk tea was invented in 1965 by Lipton, as part of their “royal” series. It got really popular in Japan, and the name stayed.
This is finally the last post of this series! There are obviously more kissa menu items, but I think this series covers the most characteristic and unique items.

Another mint-grey outfit with regency inspirations.
We went to the botanical garden - mainly the greenhouses since it was not quite spring yet, and it was fun! I will post more photos later.
I felt like I had kind of exhausted the dresses I currently owned that had a regency feeling to them, but when I looked at this JSK I realized that it has some regency-like elements to it that fit pretty well. Hem ruffle detailing like this is fairly common for the era (although, much longer and not polyester of course).
The bust area has some gathering too that would have been alright too, I think, but straps are not entirely regency, so I decided to wear my trusty jacket on top as a faux spencer…which I think helps sell the look a little more. I ended up changing my shoes to boots before leaving - imo the mary jane style shoes lean the outfit more typical lolita.

In late November, we had a twinning meet! I took the opportunity to ask hellquinn to twin with me as we own the same MM piece in black and had talked about twinning for a little while.
I searched for items that we had in common, which resulted in very close to one to one twinning Since I also own Roland, I asked hellquinnshadow if we could match as well! So here is a picture with both of them, which I love! Thank you for cooperating with me for these cute matching outfits
Unfortunately I don’t know the pieces hellquinnshadow is wearing (aside from Atelier Boz’s Roland jacket), but here is the breakdown of hellquinn and I’s outfit:

I fell in love with Alice and the Pirate’s Petit Chaperon Rouge series when I first laid eyes on it, so as soon as I received this JSK I wanted to do a red riding hood themed coord!
I really like not only the country-style cut, but also the print, which has this meta kind of element to it where little red appears to be wearing items from the series (possibly the JSK, cape, and definitely the floral headbow that I’m wearing here). Also, the hunter (and anthropomorphic wolf?) appear to be wearing ouji!
Also…check out the sulking wolf in the last panel.

Wine x Navy accents coord. (sorry for so many photos, by the way)
Ever so slightly experimental with adding in the navy, in an attempt to balance it I added some navy bows to the JSK (but I think they look a tad off? I really wanted to use my navy sash with the bows, but I thought that was toooff). I really want to move out of my comfort zone slowly and experiment with bringing in different colours more, overall.
But in any case, this JSK is super lovely!
