Dark!Viking James Barnes, Reader, Steven Rogers

Words: 1020

Warnings: None. This one isn’t dark, just setting up new alliances.

A/N: Sorry it’s been a while since I updated this. Life has been super crazy and I’m using the computer I use for school, which is not my first choice for my writings. I’ll try to update this more often. Thanks for sticking with me! Enjoy!

Several days had passed since your conversation with James and his desire to start anew. You didn’t buy his repentant man act, whose only goal is to make you see the good in him and begin to put your trust in, but so far, he’s keeping his promises, as few as they had been. No matter, you plan to keep him at arm’s length and would not turn your back on the heathen. You will always keep yourself one step ahead of the Viking, come hell or high water.

The only thing you were having a hard time wrapping your head around was the use of James’ most trusted friend, Steven. You knew the relationship between the two, hell, he was there when the Vikings stormed into your lands and watched as the hedonistic brute slayed your father. The blues of his eyes focused on you when James took you to his ship and locked you into his quarters. He stared at you anytime he came into the Captain’s room, his eyes seeing you lying naked and afraid on the bed after being used as James’ plaything, his gaze never wandering. Steven has seen you at your worst but has done nothing that would make you think his own intentions aren’t as cruel, and he isn’t planning your downfall right along with his best friend.

Which is why you had a mind to keep him at a distance and today would be no different. Today, Steven was to escort you around the village and let the people see you, their Queen, potentially interacting with those whose interest was piqued. James had arranged for his friend to accompany you, saying his presence around you would look favorably with the villagers.

You were skeptical of this. If James was the one his people looked to as their protector, the man that essentially ruled them, why would Steven by your side make a difference? Wouldn’t it make more sense for the Viking ruler to show you around so the people could see the two of you interacting, casting away any doubts and suspicion? That was reason enough to doubt the validity of this new start and you fully intended to proceed with all caution.

“Morning, Princess,” Steven greets you at the door of your abode with a bow.

You curtsy as you would in any formal setting but remain silent. You had no desire to exchange verbal pleasantries and this was not a setting that called for a proper response.

Steven sighs, he must sense the tension but doesn’t speak of it. He offers his arm to you, and you take it with a shrug, the two of you starting your trek around the village.

“Nice day for a stroll.” The man at your side tries to start conversation after moments of tense silence.

“We are not friends, so there is no need to talk.” You smile at a woman carrying a basket of vegetables as she passes you by.

“And what if I’d like to become friends?”

You stop and stare hard into the Vikings blue eyes looking for the lie. “I’m not interested in playing your games and I won’t be made a fool of,” you warn and stomp away, continuing the trek around the village.

Steven catches up to you, joining back at your side. “I’m not here to play games, your highness. I wish to offer you my friendship and loyalty.”

“Loyalty?!” You wave at two young children that are pointing at you, smiling happily in your direction. “Your loyalty and devotion lie with your tyrant friend. I do not wish to be on the receiving end of your Viking loyalty.”

“You’re right,” he agrees as a young blonde crosses your path and hands over a loaf of warm bread. You nod and offer thanks, the girl smiling back and running off, back from where she came. “I’m sure my past actions can be seen as vicious and cruel, but I come to you now to seek forgiveness and offer my friendship and devotion. I cannot stand by and see any further harm is bestowed upon you.”

Stopping in the middle of the road you look upon the Viking. He appears sincere in his words. Truth be told, he resembles a kicked or wounded animal and you wonder if this is another game or if he’s really telling you the truth.”

“And why should I trust you?”

Steven shrugs, and it’s probably the realest thing you can recall him doing. “You can’t,” he admits. “From day one there’s nothing that I’ve done that is cause for you to believe me, but I’d like to earn your faith and in time, win your trust. All I’m asking for is a chance, something I know I do not deserve.”

There’s a vulnerability in his words and presence, you can sense it. This is not the same Viking that stood by and watched as James slaughtered your father, nor the same man that was present when your captor repeatedly had his way with you on the ship. The person in front of you was displaying a softer side, one that you had never encountered before in any of the warriors. Maybe this was something that could be used to your advantage later.

“I do not trust easily anymore. Your friend has driven that from me, and I don’t think I’ll ever find myself a trusting fool as I had been raised to be.” Steven nods but remains silent. “I do realize I need an ally but I’m hesitant to use that term. I’m not sure how loyal you wish to be or if you’re playing the long game and looking for a better opportunity with James. Whichever the case may be, I implore you to choose wisely. I may have started as naive but I’m far from it. You’re either with me or against me.”

Steven takes a moment to think but then smiles. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” He holds out his hand in an offer of kinship.

You grin and take the offered hand. “So, it seems.”

Do you guys remember me getting excited abt this? Well, i’ve outlined my plot points now and i’ve started writing :))) Here’s my first draft of my prologue! Ultimately I went more AC with this and tried to incorporate more gameplay stuff than completely historically accurate. Also, I obviously played a little w relationships since it’s an AU and all, but I think the basic stuff is there. idk, lmk how you like it so far I’m in my early chapters rn

~500 words feat. Breach (ofc) and Skye!

“Why are you doing this? You don’t have to listen to him!”

Erik stormed past his sister who tried to cling onto his arm, but he withdrew his hand and walked past.

“I have until sunrise to leave. Are you with me or with him?”

“Erik, you have to—”

“My father took you in. He housed you. He raised you, and now he is gone. You heard his words, you saw the challenge, so who’s side are you on?” With every line, he took a step closer. He would never hurt her, no, but he needed to know who was loyal to him, and who was loyal to his brother. “Kirra, but you must choose.”

“It’s you. Of course, I choose you.”

“Good,” he ruffled her hair and smiled. “Then let’s get packed. Those who are loyal to me will meet us at the docks.”

“Where will you go? To the east? The Rus—”

“No. The east is poor this time of year, and my brother already has friends along the rivers and seas there.”

Swords, an axe, his shield, they were all a priority. They would have enough rations for a week’s worth of travel maybe. Erik searched under his desk and found his hidden chest of silver coins. There were other treasures and trinkets that he would’ve liked to bring had he had more time, but this was the lot that was drawn. He needed to get out.

“Erik Torsten. You haven’t answered me yet.”

He stood up straight and gave himself a second before turning to face his sister. “West. We go to the land of the Norse, get what supplies we’re still missing, then go west to England. There’ll be plenty of land, and my brother was never a fan of the warmer weather there. We’ll be safe.”

“Are you giving up on our home?”

There was pain in her voice that was echoed in his chest. This was their homeland. Their ancestors lived and died here. They knew every inch of their land like it was the back of their hand. Both had lived good lives here, full of memories and love that meant nothing the moment his brother turned on him. And if they left, it was unlikely they would come back.

“Yes. For now.”

“What if we reached out to our Norse allies?”

“They would never make an enemy in a different land, and they would never support a coward—”

Kirra scowled and protested his words, “You are no coward!”

We may know that, but according to our traditions… That is what I am. Now, let’s go.”

He put his arm around his sister and led her out to the waiting longship. There were others that looked to be ready to leave with him – enough to fill another longship, but they were still a minority. These were the ones who would believe in his leadership. The rest who stayed were either too afraid to leave their home, or on the side calling him a coward. Either way, as he looked at the darkness over his town, torches flickering in the chilly air, he knew that this was not the last time he would set foot here. But until then, Erik would need to say goodbye.

Tales from the SMP Ideas I Think Would Be Cool:

(All of these are my personal ideas, but feel free to add your own. Also if someone wants to show Karl, that’d be cool too, maybe he can get some inspiration from these)

  • Roman Gladiator AU: Karl gets transported to a small Roman town and is captured by goons and forced to fight in the local arena with other gladiators owned by a wealthy guy. Karl and the other gladiators fight some other gladiators, and then try to cause an uprising/turn against their owner and become free.
  • Desert Oasis AU: Karl time travels to an oasis in the middle of a desert where a plane has crashed near by. The passengers survived, but some of the planes parts were stolen by desert bandits. Karl and the survivors have to raid the bandit camp and get the plane parts back in order to fix the plane. Maybe there’s some sort of plot twist with the mechanic or pilot, idk. Also I’m not sure of the time period, the story I was thinking of (Flight of the Phoenix) takes place during the 60s, but I don’t think it matters that much.
  • Titanic AU: Karl is aboard a ship (similar to the Titanic) where a famous duke/lord is on board. Everyone is enjoying dinner when the ship hits an iceberg and everything goes to chaos. The duke goes missing amidst the chaos and Karl has to help find him and get him to safety (maybe the duke is one of the SMP member’s ancestors and that’s why it’s so important that Karl saves him). Plus there’s only a limited number of life boats available, so the clock is ticking and sacrifices must be made. Who is the captain, and how is this unsinkable ship sinking???
  • Renaissance AU: Karl meets a famous renaissance architect who commissions him to gather different materials throughout the city. Karl makes his way to all of the vendors, meeting new people, but when he comes back to deliver the materials - the architect is gone! Only a note is left, telling Karl that the architect has been kidnapped by one of the vendors he has encountered due to a disagreement over price (or maybe something more sinister)… either way, Karl must retrace his steps and see which character has the renowned architect held hostage.
  • Viking AU: Karl finds himself transported into the middle of a land conflict between vikings. It’s really similar to the Great Divide episode from ATLA, but maybe the audience chooses which side Karl should help? Regardless, Karl must choose a side and partake in a raid of the other clan’s base! (Or maybe it’s a capture the flag type of game? Not sure)
  • Mob/Mafia AU: Karl arrives in a 1920s city where the local mob is ravaging the other citizens. As soon as he is transported, Karl witnesses the mob storm a building and steal cash from a local businessman, but then the mob members, including the boss, are arrested and put in jail. The cops don’t arrest Karl, but they let him see the crime boss in prison. The boss offers Karl to be his lawyer and get him out of the situation… or he’ll order his cronies to kill him. So, Karl must defend the crime boss in a court trial, and his life depends on it.

Ok that’s all I have for now, thanks for reading! :)

Okay so…I have been having thoughts, don’t perceive me…

Viking!Kirishima who has long hair. Its a symbol, his pride hinges on having hair. He’s well-groomed first off, having long luscious hair is a symbol of his wealth and stature in the Viking world. Its said he dyes his hair with the blood of his enemies and thats partly true, he uses beets and crushed flowers to get his hair to that beautiful red shade but being a warrior he does get covered in blood.

Viking!Kirishima who let’s you play and braid his hair to your hearts content. Putting it up in a bun before battle so it doesn’t get in his eyes or weaving clasps through the strands for an upcoming feast. Sitting on his massive lap, him grinning in contentment while you braid beads and even gems into his hair. He always shows your work off as if Freyja herself came down to Midgard to design his newest hairstyle.

Viking!Bakugo who is the most feared King in all the North, who has taken the crown of every Jarl and melted it down for his own. A man who is said to be blessed by the Æsir. Famed to be a son of Odin, why else would people say he has a dragon? Who else could tame the spawn of Fafnir and fly through the skies like a hawk?

Viking!Bakugo who lives by the code of “you keep what you kill”. Who raids and plunders village after village for entertainment and to conquer, whatever he finds is his. By right.

Imagine being a servant to a cruel and old Lord that Viking!Bakugo kills for his land and wealth. Fearing the worst you think you’re next too and you take up arms with a random, discarded kitchen knife. Its either him or you right?

Viking!Bakugo who is too shocked that you of all people attack him and you manage to get a good hit. Stabbing him right in the chest but he doesn’t die, oh no, he doesn’t die. He laughs. A booming, maniacal, unhinged laugh. Entirely feral.

Viking!Bakugo who finds the failed assassination attempt completely adorable. You were so close to ending him, his reign of terror on the land, and by right would’ve inherited everything. His everything. The world. Instead of squashing you like a bug he takes you.

Viking!Bakugo who dresses you in fine silks, who wreaths you in glimmering jewels but not as his newest servant but as his Queen/King.

Viking!Bakugo who gives you his everything, his world, for trying to kill him. You were so hellbent on finishing the job before to take everything he had so why not give you it willingly instead? Right by his side.

He keeps what he kills, true, but he gives as much as he takes.
