#weathering with you
晴れ 【はれ】(hare): clear weather, fine weather
女 【おみな】(onna): woman, female
I found this word watching Weathering with you. One of the main character of the anime is Hina, a ‘sunshine girl’ with the power of bringing sunny weather. 晴れ女 can be literally translated 'sunshine girl’, or 'sunny weather woman’.
雨 【あめ】(ame): rain, rainy weather
女 【おみな】(onna): woman, female
雨女 literally means 'rain girl’ or 'rainy weather woman’. 雨女 (Ameonna) is also a legendary female spirit, described as a goddess from China’s Mount Wushan, who is a cloud in the morning and rain in the evening.

The Spirit of the Sky and the Weather Within
One thing I find fascinating about learning new languages is that you are learning to look at the world with new eyes.
One thing I love about learning Japanese is that it teaches me to look at the world in a more poetic way.
An example?
Let’s take the anime movie Weathering with you, in the original japanese called 天気の子(Tenki no ko, Child of the Weather). Here the word “Weather” is expressed by the two Kanji (Chinese characters) 天気:
- 天 (ten)means “sky, heaven”,
- 気 (ki) means “spirit, soul, gas, air”;
so 天気 means something like “Heaven’s Soul” or “Spirit of the Sky”! Interesting enough, the word “spirit” comes from latin spirare, which means “to blow”; even the word Anime comes from Latin Anima, “soul, spirit”, related to Greek Anemos,“wind”.
Many people in the world have seen the soul as something light but powerful as the air and the wind. And, if you think about it, our soul seems to have its own weather: sometimes rainy, sometimes sunny, sometimes stormy.
Yes, learning new languages can change the way you look at things. It can teach you to look at the atmosphere as the soul of Heaven, and your soul as an amazing sky full of weather.

I share my experience of watching Weathering With You (Tenki no ko) in theater and talk about how it is different from You Name (Kimi on na wa) and yet similar. The evolution of Makoto Shinkai’s style and the sound of RADWIMPS made the film a wonderful experience.
