Watákame is the first #Marakame ..he was chosen by #Nakawe to survive the great #flood and witness the birth of #Tau #Tayaupa the sun. We the #Wixarika are descendents of Watákame. He taught our grandfathers what #Tatewari taught him. The #nierika, the #muvieri, the #jicuri …

..the beautiful story of the first dawn as told by our Wixarika elders .. ❤ “They tell a story that many ages ago, when the light of the moon and stars was the only thing that illuminated the earth, Our ancestors emerged from the sea. These gods formed the first group of jicareros (medicine men pilgrims) In search of a Deer and the Hill of the Dawn. When they arrived on the hill, a deer offered itself voluntarily, His heart became the Peyote It was then that the Moon offered her son who was blind and cripple, but a good hunter, Whom offered himself to the fire and as he traveled thru the underworld, He remerged as the sun, our father Tayau. That was the first hunt and the first dawn. This is how the #Wixarika tell it.” #Huichol
..I brought home this masterpiece from Nayarit made by uncle Cristobal Gonzalez which represents the Corn Ceremony children in the Wixarika culture go through when they turn 5 years old..
#Wirikuta.. A comer!
Wirikuta.. Let’s eat! We don’t come here just to take selfies. Jicuri (aka Peyote) is the Eucharist par excellence of #NativeAmericans especially the Wixaritari .. In the US it is protected as a religious sacrament for #natives and nonNatives (so long as they belong to the #NativeAmericanChurch), but in Mexico it is the exclusive cultural heritage of the #Wixarika, a strict federal penalties for someone who is in possession of it other than a recognized #Marakame. This is why one eats as much as one needs in Wirikuta, and one does NOT transport it out of there..
