Acacia is a type of shrub or deciduous tree that belongs to the pea family. There are over 800 species of acacia that can be found in Australia, and in the tropical and subtropical areas of America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Acacia grows on well-drained soil, in dry and sunny habitats.
Most species of acacia have green, pinnate leaves. They are densely arranged on the branches and create impression of a giant fern. Species of acacia that grow in arid conditions have reduced leaves that consist only of vertically flattened leaf-stalks (without leaf-blades). Non-Australian types of acacia are covered with sharp thorns (modified branches or leaf-stipules). Acacia develops pea-shaped flowers that consist of 5 petals. They are yellow or white, rarely purple or red colored. Flowers are arranged in dense, globular clusters at the end of the branches. Acacia produces fragrant flowers with large number of long stamens that are responsible for the fuzzy appearance of the flowers. Acacia has short lifespan- most species live between 15 to 30 years.
Acacia is supposed to have been used for Zulu warriors’ iziQu (or isiKu) beads, which was appropriated by Sir Robert Baden-Powell to use for the Boy Scout movement’s Wood Badge training award.
Egyptian mythology has associated the acacia tree with characteristics of the tree of life, such as in the Myth of Osiris and Isis.
Several parts (mainly bark, root, and resin) of Acacia species are used to make incense for rituals. Acacia is used in incense mainly in India, Nepal, and China including in its Tibet region. Smoke from acacia bark is thought to keep demons and ghosts away and to put the gods in a good mood. Roots and resin from acacia are combined with rhododendron, acorus, cytisus, salvia, and some other components of incense. Both people and elephants like an alcoholic beverage made from acacia fruit. The acacia tree may be the “burning bush” (Exodus 3:2) which Moses encountered in the desert. Also, when God gave Moses the instructions for building the Tabernacle, he said to “make an ark” and “a table of acacia wood” (Exodus 25:10 & 23, Revised Standard Version). Also, in the Christian tradition, Christ’s crown of thorns is thought to have been woven from acacia.
In Russia, Italy, and other countries, it is customary to present women with yellow mimosas (among other flowers) on International Women’s Day (March 8). These “mimosas” are actually Silver Wattle, a strain of acacia.
Acacia blossoms are sead to mean concealed love; beauty in retirement; chaste love, and aspiring. Acacia is considered to be a plant of masculine energy aligned with the Sun and the element of air. It is used in spells related to protection and psychic power and the dried gum is used as a base for many incenses. Combine with sandalwood to make an incense to aid in meditation. The leaves may also be burned on charcoal to increase personal power. Acacia is associated with Osiris, Astarte, Ra and Diana. Acacia symbolizes the afterlife.
