You see, during a tour in Iraq he sustained a traumatic brain injury — the result of a bombing — and the physical complications have left him unable to care for his sweet, active pups.

Don’t let her serious face fool you! When she’s not smiling and wagging her tail she looks displeased, but just show her a treat and her eyes will light up! Bella Sr loves going on walkies, she gets so waggy when she sees her leash, and those wags double when she sees her volunteer friends.

She loves to hang out in the park, letting the sun warm her as you pet her. She takes life at a mild but grateful pace.

This older lady is a local owner surrender who came in a few months ago, but poor Bella Sr has not had a single application come in. Her shelter friends think she is about 7-9 years old, 50lbs, healthy, active, and a total cuddle bug.

Oakland, California: Ponyo is a beautiful 2-month-old girl who’s learning to navigate the world on three legs (and doing a great job!). Although she might need some extra assistance at times, she’s always determined to give it a shot on her own first.

Ponyo loves to chase wand toys, but she also loves to snuggle after a long day of exploring. She’s always happy to find out where the sun is shining and plop herself down to soak up the warmth. Although she can be reserved with new people, she’s quick to come around. She’s also a purr machine who’s content to sleep on your lap and give kisses in exchange for pets. Ponyo gets along well with other cats, too. She’s a sweetheart with a lot of love to give!

Archer came into the shelter at only a few weeks old. Once in foster care, his foster mom noticed some quirks in his behavior and after extensive texting learned Archer is deaf.

Los Angeles, California: Somewhere along the line, I lost my owner and then I lost my way.

My name is Azabache, which in Spanish means black amber or jet. I like this name, but I don’t like feeling so unhappy here. I’ve been stressed and unsettled since I arrived at South LA Shelter on June 26th. Anxiety has made me feel older than my eight years.

I’m a neutered, 82 pound, easy-going, jet black with some salt and pepper shaken in dog. I just need some affection and a peaceful place to call my own. I don’t like to cry and whine for attention from the staff and volunteers, but I don’t know how else to express how upset I feel.

The noisy, barking-dog shelter is no place for me. I guess you could say I’m more of a James Taylor than a Steven Tyler - and the shelter is pretty much Tyler all the time. This gorgeous dude is just. So. Sweet! Taz is 7 years old, 70 pounds, with a lot of heart…and currently no family to share it with!

Volunteers love spending time with this guy, who takes treats gently, and really seems to crave affection. He has the cutest “longing” look he gives when being petted.

Taz is easy going and calm, and a generally docile dude. He has been at the shelter since coming in as an owner surrender on 5/24/21. Taz’s previous owner had him since he was a puppy and shared that he is well behaved in the house and in the yard and is housetrained. This boy is also a smarty- sit, down, stay, give paw- he’s got it covered!

While at the shelter, Taz participated in playgroup. He seems to prefer a calm group. Volunteers think he may be suited for a home with another mellow dog, or happily as the only dog.

New Orleans, Louisiana: How to say you don’t want a cat without saying you don’t want a cat? Surrender your cat to the shelter for having a litter box.

That’s what happened to Buddy, a handsome 3-year-old grey and white gentleman.

Buddy takes nothing for granted, and tends to stay out of sight until addressed. However, just hearing his name will send him running toward you for affection.

Atlanta, Georgia: Abilene, 3, needs someone steady and kind.  She is trying really, really hard to be brave, but the world feels much too big to her right now.   Abilene recently came back to PAWS Atlanta after about 6 weeks in her adoptive home because her adopters felt she wasn’t bonding with them in the way they’d hoped she would.  

She came to them after being rescued along with many other dogs from the backyard of a suspected animal hoarding situation.   Because of their early experience, Abilene and the others in her group have had minimal socialization and will need extra time to feel comfortable in their new homes.

Her shelter friends know Abilene WILL bond with and love her new people, but she will need patience and a commitment that goes beyond a specific timeframe.  

She needs someone who can see her potential, but also understand what she needs right now: stability, patience, and confidence-building.

Abilene feels her best when she is with another, more confident dog.  She would do best in a home with a friendly dog who can teach her the ropes.   Abilene is gentle and sweet and smart.  

She’s also quite fearful of new people and situations.  She is still learning to walk on leash and loud noises or sudden movements may startle her.

Searcy, Arkansas: Baxter is a freckled little meatball and we can’t believe he’s still looking for a home!

Baxter is as sweet as he is chunky and an absolute doll. He has shown great progress with housetraining and will continue to do well with further training. Baxter is a big happy lovable goofball!
