My best girl, Roxanne, died on the 12/17 at the age of 14 ½. I couldn’t bring myself to say anything then, but I’m feeling better about her passing. She was a great dog. My little sister. Brat extraordinaire. She loved everyone and got to travel and experience so much. I’ll miss her terribly, but I know she had a great life with me and my parents and her doggy siblings.

was heading home through a residential area when I heard a bird sound I didn’t recognise. I almost left because of the bad visibility (bright white sky behind a tree) and bc it was towards a house (I always worry about weirding people out with my zoom lens camera pointed near a house) , but I couldn’t shake it. I wanted to know what it was! So I pulled up the merlin app and tried the sound ID, which worked for the first time :D It identified the sound as a merlin, which shocked me bc I thought it would be a much smaller bird. Once I knew it was a larger bird it was surprisingly easy to spot its silhouette, and once I looked through my camera I saw that it was eating!! double lucky!!

(warning for animal death ahead)

I got to watch it pluck the bird (you can see the feathers flying away in the first pic) and then eat it, and then it was gone a lot faster than I would expect.

my favourite photo is this one, though

This one is based on one of my all-time favorite photos of a deer carrying the decomposing head of a combatant who died locked in his antlers. Nature’s hardcore y’all.

Also available on Instagram, as well as new work I haven’t scanned yet!

truly the most disturbing thing I have posted

The Bad and Sad:

His back looks a little odd there right? Kinda hunched up.

This sweet little stray kitten had severe lordosis with scoliosis, an enlarged heart, murmur, and he was anemic.

This is not compatible with long term life. His heart was being crushed between his spine and his sternum.

We gave him a yummy meal, snuggles, and humanely euthanized.

arsanatomica:

Ive seen this article shared alot this week.

Often scavengers dont have enough time to do more than the face before it gets washed up on the beach, which is what makes this so common.

I wonder if sea faring cultures or specific professions like pirates or sailors would see this more and represent it more in either their mythology or oral traditions.

animal death

The guilt I feel when squishing bugs… unparalleled :(
