As a former zookeeper we would hear this a lot. “If you don’t study hard you’ll end up cleaning poop for a living.” It’s the one time we’re allowed to go off on the visitors. I once heard my boss rant for five minutes at a lady, in front of her kids, about how he had a Master’s degree, how people literally worked there for free, and how dare she judge people without bothering to know anything about them. Later that day his boss came by and said, roughly, “She told us what happened. Thanks for not throwing anything this time.”

Oh maaaannn yeah I can’t even imagine how hard myself or my coworkers would lose their minds if someone said that within earshot.

For those who don’t know: Zookeeping is a ridiculously competitive field. You perform incredibly difficult physical work while also needing highly specific and refined scientific and experiential knowledge. And you make a depressingly small amount of money in comparison to any other job you could get for that amount of education and experience.

Those people shoveling poop are the lucky ones. They are living the dream. And they aren’t there for any reason other than passion for animal care and conservation. And yeah, almost all of them have bachelors degrees and many have masters.

Say this kind of BS around a keeper and they will come for you.

i helped work behind the scenes at the zoo past two summers and that shit is exhausting. there’s no such thing as holidays off, because the animals need you. you’re out in the zoo no matter the weather, breaking your back because these little innocent creatures depend on you for their wellbeing. and it’s great. but it’s hard work and those keepers who do it for a living do it because they love it, and because they love the animals we work with. they absolutely deserve full respect and appreciation.

✨I saw this quote at a cat cafe the other day and this really resonated with me.✨

It is true that even if we can’t change the world, at least we are changing the world for our feline family members.

Long ago, Mina lived a life without comfort and warmth. Now she never has to live a day without those things.

Easter (Stop and Lick the Butter)

Easter says you should take some time today to stop and lick the butter. Let me know how that goes! (Also, if you started singing and you’re more of a raisin, you’re my people.)

MeetFrederick my red panda! I have loved red pandas since the first time I saw them. It seems that no matter what, they are playful and curious creatures. Try a search for a “vicious” red panda and you’re likely to fall over laughing.

Helurrrved his doggie.

Vincent had a dog. His name was Joe.

One day Joe got into some legal trouble, and Vincey had to bail him out:

The caption (which is a little washed out) reads:

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 23 - ACTOR DEFENDS DOG - Actor Vincent Price thinks his dog, with which he’s featured, is “the world’s best dog…I love him so much I’m here to defend his honor against this charge.” The dog is charged with running into the street and upsetting a bicycle ridden by Charles F. Benjamin, 60. Benjamin is suing Price for $13,193 for a broken collarbone.

In 1961, Vincent wrote The Book of Joe: About a Dog and His Man. The book detailed Vincent’s love for animals of all creeds and colors, as well as some charming, endearing and touching anecdotes about his beloved doggie, Joe.

In the beginning, VP writes (in a voice dripping with classic Vincent Price flair):

This is a tale of how I went to the dogs or, to be numerically correct, to the dog. Now please do not expect this book to end with a glorious proclamation of rehabilitation. Not a chance. After fourteen years I’m incurably hooked on, intoxicated by, and addicted to - my dog Joe.

You gotta admit: there’s just something special about a man who loves his dawg!

Oliver is my 11 year old cat and my pride and joy. If you’ve followed me for a while, you know she’s my baby. We have been through so much over the years. She has had a lot of health issues. First, she had hyperthyroidism and had to get radiation to treat that. Then she was throwing up her food very often for years and was finally diagnosed with IBD. Then last October, she suddenly out of nowhere went into kidney failure and almost died. Luckily, she survived, but was diagnosed with Stage 3 kidney disease. Since then she’s had to be on a special prescription diet, I have to give her pills daily, and I have to give her subQ fluids at home through an IV every other day. This will be for the rest of her life. Recently I noticed a strange lump on her toe. Turns out, it is melanoma and apparently that is extremely rare for a cat to have on their toe. There isn’t even much info out there to go on. The vet recommends surgery to remove Oliver’s toe. Because of Oliver’s kidney disease, she is high risk to be put under anesthesia. But without surgery, the lump will get bigger and she’ll die. Her kidney disease is also progressing and is almost at stage 4. It’s all a mess and I’m overwhelmed but I want to do what I can to try to prolong her life. Even if she survives the surgery she may not have a lot of time, but I have to try. As you can imagine, all of this is insanely expensive. I set up a GoFundMe page. The link is below. I know times are tough but if you can donate, it would mean the world to me. If you could share this post that would also be great. Anything helps, even $5 or just a share. Thank you so much for your support during this hard time.
