The hawk from Rango, ballpoint pen sketch

Decided to try using ballpoint pen in my sketchbook for the first time and was able to whip this out with no reference in about 5 minutes. The hawk is one of my favorite animal characters of all time and to this day one of the most realistic looking birds in an animated film.

Here’s one of my favourite tigers, finally coloured!

Here’s something a little different this time, a jaguar in digital media. I have a lot to learn…

Sorry for the silence again, life’s kinda hard to get back on track. But promise I’ll be back with more tigers!

Day 4: Zebra

My worst nightmare is hooves. But this zebra was fun to draw!

Nocturnal Animal Calendar Project

Starting things off with September - the Aardvark.

These nocturnal creatures are native to Africa. Their name, which comes from Afrikaans (erdvark) means “earth pig,” due to their hog-like snout. They don’t fare well in extreme heat, so they remain in their burrows until they can hunt in cooler night temperatures; feeding on ants and termites.

Here’s a few of my wolf drawings that I did from yesterday’s animal life drawing session at Walt Disney Feature Animation. Each of these sketches took about 5 -10 mins and they were done with traditional medium: conte crayon.

Egg-yolk jellyfish are a beautiful jellyfish found in the waters along the West Coast. Hitchhikers like crabs have been found catching a ride inside their bell (the umbrella shaped top)- which is something I REALLY want to see!

This year, every time I feel like I am burning out working on big projects, I take a break and do some silly 30 second blind contours of animals from memory, and it is so freeing, I can’t help but laugh as I try to recall the shape of the animal and feel its form with my hand without looking at what I am doing. I think I did a pretty good job, I am proud of them :) I suggest everyone do this when they feel stuck and frustrated, whether as an artist or not.
