WithWest Side Story nearing production, Spielberg’s Tony and Maria (Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler) pose for a picture after the latter’s performance in Shrek: The Musical.
Baby Driver star Ansel Elgort will play Tony in Steven Spielberg’s forthcoming take on the classic musical West Side Story.
Tony Kushner has written the script for the film and recently Justin Peck of the New York City Ballet was hired to act as choreographer.
Casting calls have taken place over the last few months to find the leads and members of the Sharks and Jets, but Elgort is the first actor to be announced.
Tony is one of the story’s star-crossed lovers and is a former member of the white street gang the Jets. It is thought that Spielberg is looking to cast mostly Latino actors for the film.

West Side Story was kind of my first real musical theater obsession. It also opened up Shakespeare to me for the first time! Both are loves that have never left my nerdy little heart.
