“Cooked a Puerto Rican dinner for some of my West Side Story friends last night at my place with the thought in mind of reminding them what they’re getting into. First thing Steven asked to see: My Oscar from West Side Story.”
Tony, Maria, and Anita, West Side Story, 1961 and 2021 Film Adaptations
West Side Story was kind of my first real musical theater obsession. It also opened up Shakespeare to me for the first time! Both are loves that have never left my nerdy little heart.
I made Tony and Maria from both movies as well as Ariana DeBose as Anita in Spielberg’s film. If I can find pieces I like, I would love to make Rita Moreno as Anita (and maybe Valentina!). But for now, you can purchase the sets of Tony and Maria or Ariana!Anita HERE at my Etsy.
Anita (Rita Moreno), West Side Story (1961)
I did mention I wanted to make a custom of Rita Moreno as Anita.
In 1961, Rita Moreno became the first Hispanic actress to win an Academy Award for her role as Anita in “West Side Story.” She is also known for starring in “Singing in the Rain” and “The King and I” on stage, as well as being one of only 12 EGOT winners, with two Emmys, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.
In 2004, Moreno received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush, and in 2009, she received the National Medal of the Arts from President Barack Obama.
