Breaking down Anya’s new costume

So, it finally happened, Anya is back to Araña! And with it, a new costume!

My overall thoughts of the new costume: I love it! It combines the best of both, combining the more traditional spider-hero attire with the casualness and personality of Araña.

I know the Spider-Girl costume has its fans, but from basic character design it would never stand out. Let’s be honest here, when you think of a white spider with a black background, your first thought will always be Venom before anything else. The red and white make her stand out more among the Spider-Family since there’s no one with a similar color scheme. At the same time, her spider symbol is much more distinguishable rather than being a generic spider.

Speaking of the new symbol, I LOVE the heart motifs in there! In my own attempts at redesign I would also try to combine the spider with a heart, it’s a small motif that really tells you what makes her different from other spider heroes.

Some things about this redesign gives us some clues about her new status quo they are teasing. First and foremost, the most obvious is the return of the bolas. This implies she probably lost her organic web, and probably all her other Spider-Girl powers. The other thing is her sleeves; as meanwhile her right arm is completely covered, her left arm is exposed, with the tattoo being prominent.

Could it be that we could see the return of the carapace? Having the tattoo being so prominent probably makes it for artists to draw more henshin style transformations.

And speaking of henshin, that scarf tho….

Lastly, the… thingies she has on her hips.

I have no idea what are they supposed to be, but I can’t help but notice that those patterns look strikingly similar to those of the totem scrolls.

Could it be that her new status quo involves delving into a more mystical realm? I hope certainly hope so.

Probably the one drawback I have is the short hair. Her ponytail was iconic, it was the one thing that made her distinguishable from Venom. Yes, it’s impractical, but so are capes, and I don’t think we won’t be removing Superman’s or Batman’s anytime soon. Under the right artists, the ponytail was a extension of Anya’s emotions.

I do hope they bring it back, even if it’s a short ponytail like from early Araña.

A vision Madam Web sent to Spider-Man to try and warn him of Kraven the Hunter’s family beginning their hunt for spiders.

Jessica Drew, Ben Reilly, Eddie Brock, and whoever is wearing the Iron Spider armor were not involved in the event, but appeared in a WHAT IF? Peter became Kraven the Hunter tie-in story. Julia Carpenter, who is featured in the story, is absent from this page but appears on the variant cover that was reused from this page.

After nearly a decade, Mark Brooks draws Anya again for the Hellfire Gala!

Feat. my second favorite superhero, Moon Knight!

To think that all these years ago, it was the original Avery/Brooks Amazing Fantasy/Heart of the Spider and Houston/Fincher Moon Knight that got me into comics!

This is a *alleged* leak from 4chan.

I don’t buy it, as many people pointed out in the reddit comments (here’s the full “leak”) there are a lot of red flags of other fake leaks.

That said, I can’t help but to think this kind of plot is exactly what I would expect from Sony. Generic origin story, while shoving as much lore and characters in one movie as they can.

And my thoughts about the potential introduction of Anya in this movie are… not good. For starters, Anya is a character who literally has had more ongoing series and solo issues than any of the other characters in this movie. So they’d be erasing all her interesting backstory in order to turn her into Julia’s sidekick.

The only positive thing is Jenna Ortega as Anya (that does align with a previous leak from a more credible source, albeit they said they ultimately dropped the role), but even then it would be a waste to have her as a side character instead of being the lead.

Early designs by Mark Brooks.

I really dig the version 3.
