Celebrating my return to Tumblr (as well as International Women’s Day) with selected pieces from my newly released book Marvel POWERS OF A GIRL!! I worked with Disney Publishing for nearly ALL of 2018 on this, completing over 100 individual illustrations of female superheroes. It’s the biggest and most ambitious art project I’ve ever taken on and I really hope it’ll be inspiring to all young girls (or anyone) out there! AND WOOO I’M PUBLISHEDDDD

The book is available in all major retail and online bookstores, it’s also been translated into a number of different languages including Spanish, Polish, and Korean! Currently there is a nice $11 deal on Amazon… thank you VERY much to all of my followers throughout the years, couldn’t have built the skills or courage to do this without your support!

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and I wanted to join in appreciation for that by drawing another character in my panel style. Here’s SILK! An excellent addition to the Spider-Man mythos. I had fun drawing and coloring her!

I just read the first issue of Silk. It’s a Marvel comic featuring an Asian American female superhero in her own solo title. “But,” you wonder, “is it any good?”

To which I must respond,

“Yes.”

“How good?”

It has a lot going for it, like witty dialogue and energetic storytelling. Both the superhero and secret-identity parts are interesting in their own right. But it’s a Spider-Man spin-off, which means that anyone but a devoted Spider-Fan is going to be a little lost with all the backstory, and it means that Silk’s adventures aren’t part of a fictive world that was built around her. Think of:

* Batman’s Gotham City, with its leering, insane, criminal villains
* Superman’s Metropolis, the gleaming city of the future, and the cosmic surrealism of its villains
* Spider-Man’s New York, where Peter Parker is always running late to meetings with J. Jonah Jameson because the city’s been attacked by villains like the Rhino or Green Goblin
* Buffy’s Sunnydale, the southern California middle class town with villains like flawed vampires and charming politicians

Great superheroes stride in front of their world. The setting is part of the myth; the villains define the hero. I “get” that giving Silk a preconstructed world will help the series find an audience among Spider-Fans, but it also means that it will be nothing short of astonishing if she ever becomes a full-fledged superhero legend like the ones I mentioned above.

Cindy Moon aka Silk!

Piece 21/31

Why have we been ignoring the fact that Cindy Moon and Abe Brown are in the MCU? Cindy Moon is silk and there is talk of her getting a movie! Then Abe Brown is Black Tiger! We are missing that some of the kids on the decathlon team are superheros in the comics.
