Master List of Posts

Neo Geo MVS (SNK)

Nothing super-special about seeing the MVS here. It just reminded me that I’ve been seeing fewer and fewer of these. This is also one of the machines I’d like to have one day. I’m not 100% set on which cartridges to use, but the ones seen here are good picks.

Virtual On (Sega)

A pretty fun head-to-head arena fighter featuring mechs that behave more like people than giant robots (you still control them with twin flight-sticks, though). You can’t really tell from the angle of the photo, but the machines actually have a built-in partition to prevent screen-looking.

Fix-It Felix (Disney?)

I had no idea that they actually made a real machine based on the game from the movie! The cabinet does a great job of imitating the Donkey Kong artwork. The game itself isn’t anything too special, but I felt a pretty strong sense of novelty from the fact that someone actually made this machine.

Fun fact: although the concept for this game was obviously inspired by Donkey Kong, the characters, level design, and gameplay more closely resemble those of Beauty and the Beast, a Donkey Kong ripoff that was released for the Intellivision:

Ice Cold Beer (Taito)

Not a video game, sure, but this was unusual enough that I wanted to include it. Basically, you have to control a ball bearing that’s tucked between a metal rod and a vertical playing field. You can control the slant on either side of the metal rod, and your goal is to navigate the ball bearing into one of the designated goals. It’s ridiculously challenging, but the idea is really cool.

Abstract Advent: Week 2

Abstract Advent: Week 2

Last week was a blast, this week for the Abstract Advent the Christmas Shit™ started to bite, and I found it harder to juggle meeting up with people, portrait sessions, getting all the cards and parcels off in a panic because like storms, flooding, wrong kind of wind, snow and ice on the roads as always Royal Mail can’t keep to their last posting times…

As Sandy Denny says in ‘No End’ “They said…

Table Flipping Game! This is an awesome arcade game we found in Tokyo and which already has a fair few youtube videos dedicated to it and is quite well known.

So of course… it was halloween and we were a little squiffy and we had a go and filmed it. I know this might not be the kind of thing you guys follow me for and it falls into the category of personal interest rather than general appeal, but I hope you get a giggle out of it at least.

I can’t remember where this particular arcade is i’m afraid… but there are some good ones that do have the table flipping game opposite sunshine city in Ikebukuro, in the same building as the izakayas i’m always harping on about.

The commentator by the way is Blake, my favourite Hawaiian who was here last term and who we miss dearly.

FIRST LOOK

Cave Studios is making a video arcade game “Slingball.”

The game itself is simple – use the ball to hit objects within the field. It’s a neon-retro arena where the ball can bounce along the walls. But the game will have more features than meets the eye! Our programmers are currently working on its quirks and visual appeal.

Follow for more updates!

hey guys! some friends of mine are making a video game and they need exposure. They’re a new organization and don’t have a following on social media just yet. Help them spread the word please! The more people know, the more motivation they’ll have to actually finish this lol

Now for something completely different!. Last spring I was working on a video game pitch together with a producer. A modern re-envisioning of classic beat-em-ups like Final Fight, Double Dragon and Streets of Rage. Now in HD and with hand drawn graphics and animations. I created a lot of art and tried to emulate that colorful 90s Capcom look I’m very fond of. While I received great interest and inquiries from several publishers, the project was put on hiatus as it became clear that I’d have to self-finance a playable demo before I could move forward. For now the pitch is on hold but might resurface someday as a Kickstarter, Patreon or if I find a talented programmer enthusiastic enough to devote their spare time towards a demo. In the meantime I’ll share a few glimpses over the next few days.
