A Study of Night: A lot of the work I’m doing lately involves dark woods, forests at night. Learning to draw these places better means spending time in this environment. Which is also something, until recently, I was extremely afraid of. This summer’s camping trips and evening forest explorations have allowed me to literally face that Fear. During my most recent late-night study of the woods I realized it’s the obscurity that causes my fear. In the darkest of dark, shapes blend together and stop making sense to the eye. The imagination runs wild on what can barely be seen. Even worse is the periphery. In the moonlight or firelight there are some rain-damp leaves that catch barely a glint of light, which can’t be seen when I look directly at it. But a turn of the head and the light is brighter in the periphery. Is it really a damp leaf? Or a will-o-the-wisp? Or something more sinister? For me the real Fear isn’t in monsters that are right in front of you: it’s in the intangible that plays with your eyes. 

Today’s “Folklore Thursday” theme over on Twitter is “transportation” ~ and I was reminded of these wee tiny Baba Yaga Chicken Shack paintings I did last year for a show at @gristletattoo. 

“Baba Yaga in the Morning” is based on the comic/graphic novel I’m working on called Cicada Season. 

“Baba Yaga in the Evening” is an accurate picture of how I spend my evenings. 

(You don’t want to see a image of “Baba Yaga at Suppertime”. Eeek.)

OH HEY TUMBLR. 

Man it has been a while. But I’m excited for the @monthoffearart party that’s about to begin, so I’m back. 

Here’s a drawing I did recently! Last month I read “Uprooted” by Naomi Novik and loved it (I actually read it twice in a week, it was great). This drawing is of the main character, Agnieszka. I really loved and identified with her story and character. And, y’know me, I’m a sucker for a Baba Yaga tale.

Baba is daughter by Baba Yaga, she is an old woman from Slavic mythology. A Baba Yaga appears in tales of Slavic folklore. Most of them with an antagonistic role, but in others in a benevolent way for the protagonist, there is a story similar to that of Cinderella where Baba Yaga is helps the protagonist. That’s why my Slime will cause chaos and sometimes help her classmates at Monster High

New post but actually finished last year and I feel it is more fitting today than when I worked on it which was around February 2021. Back then, it was my way of channeling the Corona crisis in an artistic way.

This one was informed and inspired by the work of Adolph Tidemand + Hans Gude from 1848 and of course the wonderful work of Sergey Orlyanski https://www.artstation.com/artwork/PPJ4r
I took the liberty to create something new out of this landscape that is occupied by an actual procession that looked like a marriage. That this piece was created in the midst of the Corona-crisis, is most visible on the clothes of the group on the boat. It is not as dark and grim, it should also reflect hope with whatever is going on at the far horizon like the group of people is leaving the place for good or in search for a place that is not contaminated…

For the last several months, but also for the last four years, I’ve been working on an art piece I’ve been calling the Witch Houses. The house shaped shadow boxes have been thrifted, and I fill and arrange and decorate them with witchy miniatures I’ve collected in nature, or found in antique stores, or repurposed. Each house has a theme that has emerged over time, or appeared in a dream, or come from a fairy tale. The finished works will be on display at @recspec.gallery for WITCHES, opening reception October 13th. I am also co-curating the show. There is a featured stories album on my profile for more behind the scenes work.
