~Tom didn’t play badminton yesterday.

Tutoring yesterday was mostly just playing badminton with my girl Angel. I love this little diva, I will miss her when I get home.

Nagisa Aragaki Should Have Been The Main Character of Hanebado! (はねバド!)

I made this video expressing why I feel Aragaki should have been the protagonist and why I prefer her over Ayano as a protagonist. I hope you enjoy the video. Let me know what you think cuz I worked hard on this video.

Thank you!

time for my favorite olympic tradition: mary carillo’s on-air breakdown about badminton from 2004

this is like a jerma rant

“Hey, Mary…we’ve got got just under four minutes of air time to fill before the badminton starts - can you handle that?”

Mary, whose eyes started glowing at the word ‘badminton’: “sure”

Batboys Sports

So quick thing this post is inspired by @jaybird-rednerd Jason Todd Hockey AU Moodborad and Headcacons. BTW I love them! Anyway I had I thought on what the other batboys along with Jason would play/do. Hopefully this isn’t stealing or anything cause that’s not where I was going with this.

Yell Leader is what my school calls the male cheerleaders. So when it comes up that’s what it is. I don’t know if that’s the right name because my knowledge of cheer or any sport really is small.

Dick Grayson - Gymnastics and Yell Leader/Mascot

Gymnastics ‍♂️

  • Dick has the coordination, strength, flexibility, and balance to be an amazing gymnast.
  • Plus he would look great in the uniform.
  • He would most likely compete in the rings, floor exercise, and the pommel horse.

Yell Leader/Mascot

  • This one could go either way. He could be a yell leader (male cheerleader) or the school’s Mascot.
  • As a yell Leader he would be helping with stunting and pumping up the crowd.
  • He would be tumbling along with flips.
  • He would probably volunteer to help teach a kid’s tumbling class.
  • Now as the mascot, he would ham it up.
  • The whole point is to get the crowd and the team pumped up.
  • He would probably be doing silly dances, cartwheels, and anything the suit allowed him to.
  • This spirt and energy would make him good at both.

Jason Todd - Hockey and Volleyball

Hockey

  • Okay so I’m not going to be able to write this one without copying @jaybird-rednerd so here’s the link to theirs. Go check it out. It’s really good!!!

Volleyball

  • The gym teacher was out sick one fateful day of his freshman year of high school. And boys volleyball coach was the sub
  • Volleyball was the choosen activity during class
  • Jason got into the volleyball game and he seemed to be a natural at it
  • The coach didn’t hesitate and told him he should tryout for the men’s volleyball team when the time rolled around
  • Jason was all for it. He would practice when ever he got the chance and when tryout rolled around Jason made it
  • When Jason grew taller and gained more muscle mass, he became a force to reckoned with.
  • You didn’t want to be on the other side of his spike
  • He was best at spiking and blocking simply because of his strength and jumping ability

Tim Drake - Chess Boxing and Baseball

Chess Boxing ♟

  • He is having to explain that chess boxing is a real sport ever time he brings it up
  • Low key annoys him
  • When he first found out about chess boxing, he was immediately interested.
  • He was good a chess and he knew how to box thanks to Jason.
  • Shortly afterwards he began practicing both more and began to compete.

Baseball ⚾️

  • At first he wasn’t sure if baseball was his sport
  • Once he stated, he found out quickly that swing a bat felt as natural as breathing
  • He was Gotham High School’s (I have no clue what the school is actually called) star hitter.
  • He had the best batting average of any other players to walk the halls of the school
  • When he wasn’t hitting, he could be found in the right field.
  • He had a killer throw and was great at catching. Hitting into right typically resulted in an out.
  • Tim thanked Damian for his throwing abilities. He would throw things at Damian to get him out of his. After so many year the skill had to come in handy.

Damian Wayne - Fencing and Badminton

Fencing

  • This kids has a odd obsession with swords and sword play.
  • VS letting him have any more real swords Bruce signed him up fencing classes
  • Damian hasn’t looked back since
  • He typically defetes his opponents quickly
  • Fencing requires speed and strategy which Damian has
  • Very rarely does he meet someone he struggles to beat until… well that’s for later

Badminton

  • Damian was more forced into playing Badminton then anything
  • Original he wanted to play tennis but the boys tennis team was full, so the coach sent to the badminton coach
  • Damian tried out and made it but he was excited about it, until his first match
  • He was able to play singles and batminton was kinda of a smaller version of tennis
  • He quickly progressed and was the top badminton player in the school
  • When a spot on the tennis team opened open, the tennis coach wanted Damian on the team
  • Damian turned it down flat
  • Turns out badminton + Damian = a perfect combination

Orpheus and Eurydice

There are some very Orpheus and Eurydice themes in the narrative of Ed and Stede that do indeed make me feel many things. For the record, I’m using one specific take on the myth here (specifically notthe one in Symposium), but as is standard for myths, there are many different opinions on the nuances- this is merely one of them.

First and foremost, we need death. Stede endures this in a more literal sense- legally, he is now dead. An act of devotion, perhaps, as he seeks to cultivate a fresh start with his love. Equally, however, Ed himself undergoes a death. Not only does he gift Stede a disordered burial at sea, but he invokes one for himself, too. In episode ten, he lets the red silk representing his heart sail steadfast across the ocean. Anyone who’s familiar with the ending of Orpheus’ life will know that upon his death, his head and dutiful lyre were sent floating down the Hebrus River, straight out to sea. While Ed is alive both literally and legally, he sacrificed his heart- washed to the ocean much like Orpheus himself.

Next up, we travel to the crux of the myth. The quintessential theme of mournful love. The deep and burning sort, the kind that drives you to the underworld in an attempt to rectify what was so tragically lost. In OFMD we need to backtrack to episode nine, to Edward and his act of grace declaration; a show of all he’d lose, all he would risk, to keep his love safe. He accepts the journey, perils and all! Stede mirrors this in episode ten by not simply closing the door on his past, but by going so far as killing himself off, playing with death, in order to truly live life alongside his love. Much like Orpheus, this poignantly speaks to the boundaries that need to be crossed- both that metaphorical death and journey, but also the literal treck he’ll be undertaking as he pursues his lost love.

Orpheus finds himself underground because of this simple, grief-driven hope that death cannot be final- it must be negotiable. He brings his lyre, performing a most dismal tune, and the gods presiding over the Underworld are so utterly moved by his performance that a glimmer of hope is provided. Go on then, find Eurydice, but here is your caveat: have trust, have faith, know that she is there and do not allow your eyes to wander. It’s the backbone of all relationships epitomized to the highest stakes. You need to trust in yourself that your partner will be there, to have that faith that when you make it to the Overworld, they’ll be right behind you.

For Ed and Stede, this is episode nine. Edward returns from the Underworld, preparing for a new life- for them to enter the Overworld together- but his love is not there. This doesn’t follow the myth’s narrative to a T- but it does bring us back to the idea of trust and faith- both in your partner and moreso, in yourself. It’s the nagging fear that this is too good to be true- that the excitement can snap back to grave reality in a heartbeat. Both Edward and Orpheus turn around with buoyant hope, and in doing so, they are instead faced with their worst fear.

(One possible reading of the myth could be that in season two, Stede will be making his journey to the Underworld, seeking out his lost love. All the while, Ed has already made his trip downstairs, lost his love, and had his heart utterly grief-stricken in the process. There are so many ways to slice up this myth, but the themes are wonderfully applicable!)

AND IN ADDITION,

If we are going to view the symbolism of Orpheus’ lyre as comparable to Edward’s red silk, then we find ourselves with a very interesting concept indeed. A myth regarding Orpheus’ death also comes to explain the constellation Lyra. Following his death, Orpheus’ head and harp eventually came to rest on a beach- the waves having carried them ashore. Here, his remains were found and through various passing-alongs, ended up in the hands of the gods. As many important objects often are, it was placed in the sky to create the constellation Lyra- symbolic of Orpheus and his ceaseless, joyous music.

If we take that, and we say that Ed’s silk is his lyre, then we come to the conclusion that this item will wash up ashore, be found with reverence, and placed with pride in the sky; much like a flag that one may fly from a ship.

So, in that context, are the Maenads represented by Izzy who, in wanting Ed to engage with life rather than (celibate) mourning, kills him, sending head and lyre (red silk) floating downstream? He very much wanted to stop the music of his collaboration with the crew/ channeling of Stede.

Absolutely, you put it perfectly by describing it as ‘stopping the music’!

If we’re really going to dig into this metaphor (because you’re right - this is intensely fun), may I also present for your consideration: Badminton as the snake. Both of the brothers are catalytic/ pivotal events, arguably, their behaviour governed by their essential nature, but cruel in the context of a bright, sunlit wedding. (Although I now really want to write something about characters who reject their early training and those who embrace it in the show.)

What a satisfying finale!

The confessions, oh my goodness!

I was screaming when they had these interactions! It feels like my ship has finally sailed! AHHHHHHHHHHHH!

I’m sooooooooo happy for them! Congrats to these champions!

(And Tatsuru also championed the heart of Mikoto! )

Man, when Mikoto shouted Tatsuru’s name! I JUST SQUEALED! Finally, they’re on first name basis!!!!!!! I still feel the chills as I write this post, oh gosh!

THERE SHOULD BE A SECOND SEASON, OR ELSE!

Shoutout to Tomari’s Cheerleading Squad for the support!

I supeeeeeer love this anime, definitely on my top list!

The worst cliffhanger in sports anime history!

Why did it have to be like that?!?!?!?!!?!

And Takuma reminds me of Daiki from KNB and they are both aggravating, ugh.

PLEASE BE OKAY, MIKOTO!!!!

P.S. Congrats to the Saeki brothers for another win!

P.P.S. I think Usuyama needed that loss to improve himself and kudos to Ibuki for being so sport.

SAEKI BROTHERS!

I’ve got goosebumps watching the game and I didn’t realize that the episode is already finished! Great job, Sota and Toya! Keep it up!

I still love you, Daiki-san!

Damn, as a working adult, I could totally relate to Tatsuru being ganged up on by the board. Such power tripping! Thankfully, Mikoto is on his rescue!

Surprisingly, Toru had a landslide win against Ayato! I wonder how he played against him! I’m so excited for the next episode!

Also, super nervous for the long-awaited match of Sunlight Beverage and Mitsuhoshi Banking!

We finally knew about Tatsuru and Mikoto’s past!

It was so moving! I didn’t imagine that Tatsuru was like Mikoto during his first days at work. However, it’s amazing to know how they really met - that it was Tatsuru who first taught Mikoto on how to play badminton and how Mikoto inspired Tatsuru to thrive in order to better himself.

I also love how Mikoto became more vocal now and how he’s willing to adjust for his partner. It’s just so heart-fluttering!

Mikoto got a bit dependent on Tatsuru knowing that he would always be by his side so it’s nice to see Tatsuru relying on Mikoto this time.

And to know that Mikoto’s playing style is for doubles only proves that he’s destined to be partnered with Tatsuru.

Learning these, I can’t help but ship them even more!

We all love a drunk Mikoto!

This scene was so funny and adorable at the same time because you’ll see how Mikoto got so irritated at the fact that his partner is acting different when in the beginning he didn’t even particularly care. What a great character development, indeed!

Also, I loved how Toya and Sota’s relationship as brothers became the highlight in this episode.

Moreover, a huge congratulations to Koki for being promoted as coach!

Now I see that not all marriages are toxic.

So, Toru’s backstory has finally been revealed but I didn’t expect that he and Futami were highschool sweethearts! That’s so cute!

Anyway, I love how they are so supportive of each other despite the fact that they got married early.

I love how Futami encouraged Toru to pursue his dreams this time.

I would love to have a marriage like this.

However, I’m happy that Tatsuru and Mikoto won their game but it’s a bit unfortunate for the Take-To pair and Sota.

I think this’ll be the turning point for Sota to truly engage in the sport because of his game against Ayato - who, by the way is a monster inside the court.

What I’m more worried about is how they’d handle the game against Mitsuhoshi Banking and Tatsuru’s leg injury.

Luckily, I was able to get a glimpse of Daiki-san again!

The anxiety I felt when this question appeared was incomparable!

This ruined so many lives!!!!!! LMAO.

P.S. Make sure that you have the retrieve setting ON.

Way to go, Koki!

Not only did Mikoto overcome his fear but also Koki!

Thank you, Yukei. Lol! Despite your aggravating attitude, you were able to help Koki with his trauma, unconventional it may be.

Maybe I could use this everytime I’m feeling nervous in front of a huge crowd.

By the way, I wanna know about Usuyama-san’s background and why he stopped playing the sport aside from the fact that he got married. And who is Ibuki in his life, apart from being his doubles partner?

So… Tatsuru and Mikoto already met each other before?

Why was I not surprised? It’s more like I’m already expecting it. And though as cliché as it could be, I’m excited to see how this would work for them. I mean, what will Mikoto’s reaction be? I’m looking forward to more revelations!

Also, I remember Tatsuru using that line on Mikoto during the first few episodes. I wonder if he intentionally said that to know if Mikoto would still remember?

(The place looked like the same playground where they first met as adults, AHHHHHH!)

Whew, so that was what really happened!

I was an episode late! Ugh. Sorry, got busy with work.

Anyway, so it really wasn’t Mikoto’s fault that Azuma got injured… it was because he was training himself so bad that his arm got worn out during the day of the competition and it was actually only got triggered by Mikoto bumping into him but it wasn’t him who caused it in the first place.

I understand the pressure on Azuma of having a skilled partner and the feeling of being burdened by the responsibility of wanting to be on the same level. However, I’m just happy that they didn’t have any hard feelings against each other and that they were able to make amends in the end.

Also, the fact that Mikoto was finally able to overcome his fear is definitely worth celebrating. Of course, huge thanks to his partner, Tatsuru.

I also enjoyed the camaraderie between Tomari and Sunlight Beverage teams! Hoping to see more of their interactions soon.
