#book talk
in the mood to complain about how bad most book covers have gotten recently (specifically the ones that fall in line with an overly-simplistic lineless art style that does Absolutely Nothing for the book)
okay mini rant: the main conclusion I’ve drawn when it comes to looking at books with very simple, lineless cover art is that these covers give off such a lifeless, boring vibe that to me personally it really detracts from my ability to get into a book that I know nothing about. i know the whole “don’t judge books by it’s cover” phrase has some merit to it but these covers do have a direct impact on how readers perceive the book! book covers are such a massive tool for marketing that it’s a shame that they all look exactly the fucking same. you can have book covers with simple typography, graphic design, or cover art that look incredible because they match the energy and themes of the book but this does not (and shouldn’t be forced to) work for every single romance or ya or new fiction book that comes onto the market.
do you see what i fucking mean

When You Manage To Finish A Book In One Sitting
Okay can we all just agree that The Cruel Prince would have been 100x better if It was a spicy book!
Like I just know the things Cardan would have done to Jude after all that sexual tension, would have been the most EXPLICIT SEX SCENE EVER
Like he would devour her wholly after wanting her for soooo long- I’m so mad we got a fade to black scene instead ugh
bookblr community….what were your LEAST favorite books of 2021? the ones that made you seethe, ones you have been wanting to complain and rant about, whether you loved to hate it or hated hating it. I am here and dying to know
I usually DNF books that I don’t care about in the first fifty pages, so there aren’t many books I hate. There are some that are boring, but… there’s not the case of this post.
HOWEVER, I did finish A dowry of blood because I got it through Netgalley and needed to write the review. And oh, boy, it’s a queer retelling of the Dracula’s brides and how can queer vampires be so boring!!! I didn’t like the characters, the writing style, the letter format… ugh.
Also,Vita Nostra. I finished it because I wanted to know how it would end, but that book doesn’t make sense. And not in a cool way.
How about you? I also want to read some rants!!
The road trip by Beth O’Leary
I feel this book was advertised completely wrong !! I don’t know if it’s because the authors previous books where lighthearted, nice reads and this was kind of presented in the same way . But It wasn’t the slightly angsty road trip I was expecting. It’s a book that needs trigger warnings for many things including sexual assault. The back and forth between the past and present was frustrating and To be honest none of the characters were that likeable.
I always thought it was a lighthearted road trip story?? The cover is so ~ cute summer vibes ~.
I hate it when the advertising is misleading!! I read Meet Cute Diary (that was advertised as a Cute romcom with fake dating), and it kind of subverted the trope? I’d like if it was what I expected, but it was not the cute trope-y story I wanted to read
Exactly ! If it was advertised correctly then maybe I would have liked it because I would have read it when I was in the right mood and I wouldn’t have been as shocked at the darker twists of the story

in sunshine our titular heroine tells of a book she reads when she’s sad wherein a gothic heroine transforms herself into a waterfall to escape the villain and i have wanted to read that specific book for years.
