Due 9/15/15: The Westly Foundation is awarding cash prizes of $20,000 each to young innovators in California with creative solutions to community problems at home or around the world.
We are awarding cash prizes of $20,000 each to innovators under age 29 with creative solutions to community problems who live or attend school in California. Students from California who are attending school out of state are also eligible to apply.
We are looking for individuals who have worked on a scalable project that has been prototyped and, ideally, tested with the community-in-need. We’d like to begin communicating with potential applicants to guide them through the process, so your assistance is invaluable. Applications are due September 15, but we give priority review to those who apply by June 1.
Past winners have included both non-profit and for-profit entrepreneurs, who have crafted solutions across a range of disciplines, from distribution of surplus medicine, to providing alternatives to incarceration, to creating educational software for youth.

Granny Wolf - Little Red Riding Hood reimagination
The Wolf, who I self dubbed as Granny Wolf, from Little Red Riding Hood. Did he have a name in the fairy tale? I can’t recall anything aside from Wolf.
This was more of a character drawing and brainstorm sheet, rather than orthographic. I do plan on creating an ortho for him once I finish my current personal project.
Challenge 5 for the Brainstorm group! The theme was Blade Runner.
I thought it was interesting that the replicants in the film were made out of organic substance and I thought it would be fun to imagine how they would be build.
I pictured a kind of 3D printer, where there’s a flat surface that slowly goes up while organic matter is released into the basin by the 6 faucets on the edges. The organic matter (DNA) moves through the liquid to find its correct position and gets ‘glued’ to the rest of the body by the laser around the edge of the table. This process would continue and the replicant would slowly emerge from the liquid, like a print from a SLA 3D printer.
I tried adding movable parts to the machine so it would feel alive when active, like the Voight-Kampff machine while monitoring.
Made for the awesome Brainstorm Facebookgroup. The challenge was to combine fossil bone with a military character.
Kamikaze Ptero-Unit
Strapped with comp B and a light machine gun (lightly based off of the Japanese Type 97 machine gun), this Japanese WW2 ‘pilot’ is about to take his first and last flight.
The idea is that his arms interlock with each other, making the gun complete and ready to fire. One arm holds the ammunition, the other the actual gun. Once the two lock and the locks of the wings connect with the suit & boots, the wings will open and the pilot can fly.
However, once locked, the suit will stay locked, trapping the pilot into his own suit and making the mission his only option.
