Leverage: Redemption 1.10 — The Unwellness Job

Eliot “Grumpy Marshmallow” Spencer

Bonus, this was after Parker was talking about how she didn’t even remember Eliot’s name the first year.

Poor Eliot. Here he has been, with his family for the last 10+ years for Parker to say she didn’t even remember his name.

But here’s the thing, she may not really have remembered his name but she certainly knew who he was.

He was the one who was there to catch her, before she even knew she’d jump.

wistfulwatcher:

I love how he tries to argue . He’s really attached to the idea that he’s this tough guy that doesn’t worry incessantly about his family to the point it probably keeps him up at night but damn if he won’t go to his grave rather than ADMIT THIS OUT LOUD and instead choose to grouse and grump like the big angry goose that he is about all this.

Look, bud, your big sister, wife, and husband  Sophie, Parker, and Hardison know damn well that you’re both TOUGH and SENSITIVE AS ALL FUCK and they love you for it so stop trying to pretend you aren’t you big grumpy marshmallow.

Okay maybe he’s making a show of it in the 2nd and 3rd gifs for Breanna and Harry because surely THEY think he’s a tough guy without the marshmallow bits.

Of course, Breanna totally knows and is making a list of extortion material for Eliot with all his soft moments that he thinks that Breanna hasn’t picked up on. She will share that list later with Alec and Alec will be so goddamned proud of his little sister for taking up the mantle of annoying Eliot when he was away.

As for Harry, he’s totally picked up on the fact that Eliot’s a bit soft for his family but to him that makes sense so he would never question it. (Also, he’s not in the habit of questioning the team hitter because, wow that would be stupid.)

really, a shame we never got a scene like this:

Nate, planning a con: “Eliot, you’re going to take her out.”

Eliot:[pauses] “Like…” [somewhat hesitant garroting gesture]

Nate:“Wh- no, like on a date.”

or the sequel (ideally later on in the same episode):

Nate, over comms: “Eliot, take her out.”

Eliot:[pauses, blinks at the security guard] “What, like on a date?”

Nate:“No! Knock her out!”

For extra fun, a setup where the earbuds are glitchy for some reason, so he has to confirm Nate’s order via gesture, and Eliot makes a gesture that he thinks communicates “Like, seduce her?” and Nate confirms thinking he was pantomiming, e.g., tie her up and stash her somewhere, and things go off the rails from there.

Hardison insists that one or both of them is henceforth banned from Charades as a consequence.via@onyxbird

good!!I have faith in their ability to figure something out eventuallybut I love the thought of the debrief afterwards where Nate gets roasted for misunderstanding the signand Eliot gets teased for somehow successfully managing to Distract someone who was actively hostile a few minutes previoushe has a date to avoid now and he debased himself for nothing. thanks a LOT Nate.via@wolves-in-the-world

this is all very fun to picture, thank you both. I would like to add that (a) this absolutely becomes a Leverage meme. When they find out Sophie and Nate are together, Hardison will ask, “Did you…” and trail off into the seduction/abduction gesture. Parker does the same when Eliot brings Quinn to help the team. “How’d you get him here, was it” [gesture] or [very much the same gesture]?“

and (b) I gotta wonder if perhaps this inspires Hardison to start a game of Charades. Like, they already had planned family time hanging out, he’d heckled people into agreeing to play some sort of games with him. So when Eliot shows up at the end of the episode (with takeout, to complete all three meanings) (also possibly ditching his date and grumbling at the accompanying teasing), it’s to Hardison and Sophie conspiring to begin a game of Charades. They all force Nate and Eliot to be on the same team, because no one else wants to deal with them, and when they protest claim this is a "learning experience” for them. It’s a moot point anyway, since Hardison is the true MVP and anyone with him on their team is guaranteed to win regardless, but they both insist they aren’t that bad and get mad at the other one for misinterpreting what they consider very obvious gestures.

Hardison starts including “(se/ab)duction” as a step in his planning slides. It means “Eliot removes this person from their post, one way or another.”

Eliot and Nate both hate it, meaning he suggests it as frequently as possible.

Since this formulation only really works well in text, Parker ends up truncating the concept to “‘duction.” This works fine (aside from aggravation of Eliot and Nate), as long as it stays within the core team who is familiar with the source. But as they enter the Leverage Redemption era…

Just realized this whole conversation was basically rewriting this joke:

Marvelous.

jobs I know in my heart the leverage team has done:

  • shut down a puppy mill
  • conned big oil companies polluting the ocean
  • smugglers of exotic animals
  • more corrupt cop cases
  • gotten poachers arrested (and subsequently set up a sanctuary)
  • taken down a ring of unethical circuses and relocating the animals
  • stopped logging companies threatening the amazon rainforest
  • fucking over jeff bezos
  • exposing corrupt/incompetent foster parents in the foster system
  • helping international teams with getting foreign artifacts back to their native countries
  • helping underpaid teachers in a school system
  • fucking over the westborough baptist church
  • something to do with animal testing
  • stoppinggovernment officials people in positions of power funding neonazi groups
  • conning elon musk
  • the comicon job
  • exposing more government secrets and serving retribution (as a treat)
  • NFTs
  • helping queer kids in a discriminatory school system

I’m not sure what I want more

mcsweeten being in leverage redemption and still having not a clue that parker and hardison are, in fact, not federal agents and are actually world-class criminals

or at some point between the finale and now he did find out, and then some government official gets wind of one of their heists and is jabbing their finger at a blurry image of parker and hardison mid-thievery and with a completely straight face, mcsweeten explains that guys, those are agents hagen and thomas and they are working on an undercover op and were in no way at all involved of what is inconveniencing the government now

and the government official keeps trying to explain they are criminals but mcsweeten just pulls up their dossiers and credentials and he can literally see the vein throbbing in the man’s forehead but he just smiles says that he has personally worked with agent hagen and would trust her with his life

Ok but consider this the team comes clean and Mcsweeten takes it hard and says he needs some times alone . After a few days they go to check on him and find his apartment empty. Panicking they go to the FBI and find out that his office is empty too. After some discrete probing from Sophie they discover that Mcsweeten never existed . Apparently this was a brilliantly crafted false personality used by a mysterious spy who has managed to infiltrate the highest levels of the FBI

The team stunned and with their professional pride hurt decade to join in on the task force designed to hunt Mcsweeten . They finally track him down and burst into the warehouse only see … a surprise party with every member of the task force they thoguht they left in the dust and Mcsweeten who goes “I loved your prank where you tried to make me think you were criminals so I decided to play one on you as well. Thgouht it would be great for team building !”

And the episode just ends with the team unable to decide if Mcsweeten is really that oblivious or if he really is playing a massive prank on them

ot3 au set in the Harlan Leverage III Montessori School, which i will never write but need to put out into the world

  • second grade teacher eliot, who volunteers as a monitor for afterschool pickup. he’s seen as a bit of a loner by the adults even after a couple years there, given his hesitation to get close to others after he was forced out of his old, private school after whistleblowing on the corrupt principal moreau. he sings his lessons a lot.
  • school counselor parker, who recently joined the staff. she wanted to do better by kids than how she was treated growing up. she’s seen as super wacky and weird by the other adults, but that’s only because she teaches the kids self-sufficiency, speaking their mind, and that adults aren’t always right.
  • librarian hardison, who uses his ability to act with huge personalities to be the very best of Kids Corner Reading Times. he is very knowledgeable and helps so many people who come in by connecting them to information like how to pay bills online, how to make a resume, etc. he has a hobby of fixing up old computers and gaming systems.

the ot3 starts to roll forward when nana asks hardison to pick kindergartner bre up, but nana had put a sibling who has more flexible hours as an emergency contact for bre, and forgot that detail. so eliot won’t give bre up to hardison, and they have to go through a whole song and dance to make sure nana okays this, which brings in parker and… idk. things keep rolling but they are surrounded by kids and are very sweet with them and bre wants eliot to be her teacher when she gets to second grade and is very sad when hardison eventually says that cannot happen—BUT its okay because it cant happen because eliot(!) and parker(!) are gonna hang out with hardison more. and bre is very satisfied with this result.

we deserve an lesbian 80s au with bre/emily. one boombox has to be fumbled over as they both reach to flip the cassette or i riot
