Redwoods have been my favorite type of tree for many years, so staying at a cabin surrounded by redwoods is a big deal for me. At the end of November we spent four days at a cabin in Sonoma County on the North Coast and these beautiful trees were the view from my room.

A dreamy day at Bodega Head made better by afternoon fog. Summer at Bodega Head is my favorite as the weather is cool compared to the warmer weather in central California. After being away from Sonoma County and the north coast for many months, I was so excited to return back for a short visit. The sea air was a delightful smell that welcomed me back to the area.

BIG SUR ADVENTURE: WINTER

Our cousin flew in from NYC to go on a classic California Adventure so my brother and I took her to Big Sur. The winter weather can be unpredictable in Big Sur but it ended up being quite lovely. We saw Elephant Seals, Dolphins, Redwoods and much to my excitement the endangered and once almost extinct California Condor. After a lot of searching we camped in one of the more remote locations of Big Sur overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Originally we planned to camp in the Redwoods but decided to seek out an ocean view. We found a small meadow which was quiet and beautiful. Not another person in sight or sound for miles.

Big Sur at sunset with a nice assortment of vegan camp food. Beyond Burgers with Upton’s Bacon Seitan, gyoza, cast iron oven baked beans and coffee. Are gyoza the perfect camp food? Yes. So easy to make, tasty and fun.

Lots of roads are closed in Big Sur so make sure you figure out your routes in advance and be prepared for a gorgeous sunset.

Channel Islands National Park: Santa Cruz Island

We got to hang out with the cutest little Santa Cruz Island Fox on our recent adventure to the Channel Islands. The little fox was very curious and came to say hello several times during our trip. It’s hard to believe these little foxes almost went extinct just a decade ago. They’re currently making a recovery. I’m so glad people figured out a way to save them.

Santa Cruz Island is roughly a 1-2 hour boat ride from Ventura and it’s one of the best ways to completely escape the city. It’s a beautiful, relaxing and extremely quiet place to visit. There are no services of any kind on this island. You have to bring all of your food and water. Once the boat drops you off you’re stuck there until they pick you up. This will give you some nice time to think and relax. Come prepared and you’ll have an amazing time.
