Took Harry in for a long-deferred vet visit. He doesn’t go out and is healthy, so it’s been a few years.
Main reason for visit was a lump he’s had on his side or five or six months. It seemed to be mostly fluid and I tried to get rid of it but was unsuccessful. The vet aspirated it, with a syringe, and maybe a teaspoon of clear fluid came out. She said there is a good probability it will refill, but knowing it’s benign, just clear stuff, I shouldn’t worry about it. If at some point he comes in for a procedure or surgery where he needs to be sedated, they can actually remove it then. She said it was always good to check on lumps.
Since I was there, I also described the three different incidents of “digestive distress” Harry has had, where he has exploded at both ends. The last time there was a big hairball at the end of it, so I thought maybe hair is plugging up his tummy or something. Anyway, she gave me a big tube of anti-hairball medicine. Maybe as he’s getting older he just can’t handle it. The medicine is supposed to taste like tuna, so I expect he will love it.
We also got Harry caught up on all his shots, which were way, way behind, no big deal since he’s inside, but if he’s around other cats or some other situation, he’s set.
Weight in: 13.1 pounds. I was sure that he had gained 4-5 lbs., he seems pretty heavy lately, but it’s the same. Maybe because when you hold him, he is just dead weight.
Harry was a trooper riding on Lyft and at the exam. The only thing he complained about was a shot in his butt. (Can’t blame him.) The needle poking into the lump was fine. He’s now taking a nap. Turns 11 next month.
Litter Robot: Spaceship, Litter Box, or Both?
The Kitties were spoiled this holiday season with a brand new Litter Robot!Our little household received a nifty new Litter Robot from the kitties’ awesome auntie Jennay for Christmas/humom’s birthday about a month ago. Louis picked the flavor he, Olivia, and Emory would share and it was an all around hit. Lou devoured his right away. Olivia was a little hesitant, but I added some water and then she decided she liked it. Emory, who has recently decided that she does like fish, ate her whole bowl! There’s a lot of wet food in each pouch so there was plenty for the three kitties to split. Plus, each pouch has pumpkin in it, too, which mixes things up for the kitties and is good for their general health!

MAMA LUPINE IS ADOPTED!
“After a year and a half an all of her kittens being adopted, Momma Lupine finally found her forever home. This is an old picture because I didn’t think to take one while she was exploring her new home. She will be an only kitty which she will love. Her new mom stays at home and teaches classical piano. IN LOVING MEMORY OF DR. MIKE ZARESKI, DVM
On Saturday, December 9th, 2017, a charter plane went down due to engine failure in Clairemont in San Diego county, California. The pilot attempted to land the small plane in a school yard. The plane was carrying three other passengers. The plane was successfully landed but the pilot was unable to control the speed or the brakes. The plane collided into a house and both the plane and house caught fire.
Thankfully, no one was inside the home at the time of the crash although the 16 year old poodle owned by the family who lived there was outside in the backyard. It’s unclear if the dog perished in the fire or if he got spooked and ran off and has yet to be recovered.
The pilot and the female passenger, Dr. Dawn Stelling, visiting from New York to attend a veterinary conference here in California, survived.
The other two passengers did not. Dr. Stelling’s husband, Robert, died on the scene. The other passenger on that plane who didn’t survive happened to be Dr. Mike Zareski, DVM - the owner and director of Western Veterinary Group in Torrance, California.
Dr. Mike, as he was known to clients and staff alike, was kind, understanding, compassionate, knowledgable. He was great with animals and people, alike. He had built Western Veterinary Group up from it’s original location at the old spay and neuter clinic in Lomita to buying out Crenshaw Veterinary Hospital and turing it into the revamped WV in Torrance across from the Crossroads Center on Crenshaw Boulevard. He had a great business sense and a knack for hiring exemplary veterinarians, vet techs and staff.
Any time we took one of our KD kitties in for either an exam or something more complex, if Dr. Mike was in, he’d come out to chat with us - even if he wasn’t our attending doctor that day. He made us feel like extended family - and we considered him as well as the entire staff at WV - as extended family in turn.
Dr. Mike was such a good man who did so much good for so many.
Kitty Devore Rescue was beyond devastated to learn this sad news yesterday and grieves the loss of Dr. Mike. We wish to extend our love and sympathy to his family as well as the staff of Western Veterinary Group. WV is a vet that many KD kitties have visited over the years and Dr. Mike was one of the best veterinarians around. We ache for the loss his wife and children must be feeling. We know he was loved by his staff and know they must be hurting, too. Our hearts goes out to all of them. This was a man who was too amazing to have left this earth so soon and too early.
Dr. Mike, you will be so very, very missed.

CAT RESCUE ED 101 - WHAT YOU SAY?
To a cat, “meow” is an all-purpose word. They say “meow” as a greeting (“Hey, how ya doin’?), a command (“I want up, I want down, more food now”), an objection (“Touch me at your own risk”), or an announcement (“Here’s your mouse”). Some people have watched their cats walking around the house meowing to themselves… just like some people talk to themselves.
Chirps and trills are how a mother cat tells her kittens to follow her. Aimed at you, it probably means your cat wants you to follow him, usually to his food bowl. If you have more than one cat, you’ll often hear them converse with each other this way.
Purring is a sign of contentment (usually). Cats purr whenever they’re happy, even while they’re eating. Sometimes, however, a cat may purr when she’s anxious or sick, using her purr to comfort herself, like a child sucking his thumb.
Growling, hissing, or spitting indicate a cat who is annoyed, frightened, angry, or aggressive. Leave this cat alone.
A yowl or howl (they sound like loud, drawn-out meows) tells you your cat is in some kind of distress - stuck in a closet, looking for you or in pain. Find your cat if he’s making this noise. However, in unneutered and unspayed cats, these sounds are part of mating behavior. If your cat is elderly, he may be suffering from a cognitive disorder (dementia) and may howl because he’s disoriented.
Chattering, chittering, or twittering are the noises your cat makes when she’s sitting in the window watching birds or squirrels. One of KD’s president’s cats also does it any time she or her husband sneezes in addition to watching the nature show on “Kitty TV” at their large living room window. Some experts think that this is an exaggeration of the “killing bite,” when a cat grabs her prey by the neck and works her teeth through the bones to snap them. It’s also speculated that the chattering is a sound made out of frustration that they can’t get to the prey they see.
