Although nothing will grow on that steel deck (except rust), Navy Sailors work hard around the clock to keep American warships clean, rust-free, maintained, and, of course, battle-ready. That’s the norm in most navies around the world.

I found during my Naval career at sea….most Sailors took a huge amount of pride in their ship. Even the traditional grousers almost always, deep down, felt an attachment to their ship. And as long as the ship’s leadership could foster and harness that pride…you had a great ship.
A lot like growing a great garden.

If I told you that the surface area of a sea otter could cover a professional hockey rink, you might be forgiven for being a little confused, as these charming creatures are only a maximum of about 1.5 metres long. The secret lies in their fabulous fur coats, which are some of the densest in the animal kingdom. An adult male may have up to 800 million hairs on its body (for comparison, we have only about 100,000 hairs on our head!). Fascinating new research has found that body hair such as this can increase the surface area of animals by up to 100 times. This means that not only would a sea otter’s true surface area cover a hockey rink, but your cat could cover a ping-pong table, and a honeybee a slice of toast. The aim of the study was to assess how body hair affects an animal’s ability to stay clean. While it is clear that having fur greatly increases the potential surface area available to pick up dirt, it also acts as a shield that keeps particles away from the body and makes them easier to remove by actively grooming, shaking or secreting chemicals, or by passive displacement of dirt. Mammalian eyelashes, for example, act to redirect air flow and help to prevent dirt from being deposited in the eyes.

Clean Up Your Desktop *Permanently*
So I’ve found that Mac users tend to have more organizational quirks then their PC counterparts. To help with this is a little trick I discovered today. Just fire up the Terminal application and write in:
defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool false
And then either restart your machine or relaunch the finder in the force quit window. The best part is that you can still access all of these files under the desktop folder in your home directory.
However, If you find that you miss your desktop clutter just enter:
defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool true

edit: I’ve found a much better solution called Camouflage, and best of all it’s still free. It’s just a menulet that sits up in the menu bar. Now you only have to click the icon if you want to hide/unhide your icons, no terminal required.
