There seems to be a pill for everything nowadays, thankfully even for Covid-19 (which could be a game-changer in the battle against the pandemic), and yet, one problem persists: in contrast to the western world’s overmedication, poorer nations don’t have access to affordable medicine. A 2015 fundraising campaign for the Dutch AIDS Foundation by branding & design studio @dogandpony_ams and consultancy @suebehaviouraldesign drew attention to this paradox by making fun of our inability to see beyond our first world bubble. Have you ever wished for the ability to see unicorns, perfectly time your jokes, or make your farts smell like parfum? The cheekily named “First World Problems Store” had just the right pill for you! Needless to say, the peppermint placebos didn’t deliver on their lofty promises but they did something much more consequential - all profits from the Store went into providing HIV medication for those who can’t afford it.

Unveiled in tandem with the opening of its new exhibition space in Palazzo Brancaccio in #Rome, “Apartamento” is the latest endeavour of @contemporary_cluster, a contemporary art and design project space dedicated to cultural promotion and multidisciplinary experimentation. Located on the palazzo’s sixth floor, the private apartment was meticulously refurbished and eclectically furnished by architect @giorgia_cerulli_, co-founder of Contemporary Cluster, whose artful mix of contemporary brands and designers is set in dialogue with the building’s architectural heritage. Featuring a playful paint colour palette, which was developed in collaboration with colour consultant @sabina_guidotti of @bludiprussiaroma, the apartment explores the modern dimension of living and highlights the pivotal role of design. Apartamento opened its doors in October with “Tout Brûle”, an exhibition of paintings and ceramic and metal vases by Paris-based Italian artist Luca Casillo @di.loer which ran until December 11, 2021.

Located within an iconic Brutalist building in central #London, @toklas_london, a new restaurant, bakery and grocery store stands out among the latest arrivals in the city’s hospitality scene as much for its unpretentious yet sophisticated Mediterranean menu as for its restrained elegance and culture-minded inspiration. The brainchild of @friezeofficial founders Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover @mslotover, the venture is named after American author Alice B. Toklas who, together with her life partner Gertrude Stein, turned their pre-war Paris apartment into a modern art salon. By interweaving vintage and contemporary elements, British designer Stafford Schmool @stafschmool has subtly channelled the avant-garde spirit of Toklas and Stein’s artists and writers-packed soirees to create Toklas’ low-key, charming and genial environment.

After a pandemic-prompted hiatus, @designmiami was back on track for its 17th edition which took place between December 1 – 5. Welcoming visitors at this year’s fair was Tomorrow Land, a public installation by Portland and Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary designer @alexproba that has transformed the Miami Design District (@miamidesigndistrict) into an interactive playground bursting with candy-bright colours, organic shapes and zany patterns. Designed in Proba’s signature style, the 21 large-scale sculptures marry the dreamlike surrealism of Salvador Dali, the energizing exuberance of Keith Haring and the zany mischievousness of the Memphis Group. Complemented by an interactive, virtual game from Portland-based design practice Enjoy the Weather, the fun-packed installation “harnesses”, in curators @anavaprojects’ words, “the power of design to spread a little joy and a sense of community”, a lofty mission matched by a deserving timeframe – on view until May 2022 with a selection of sculptures staying put as permanent fixtures.

Taking over a former 19th-century church on Park Avenue in New York’s Flatiron district, the recently opened @chapelbarnyc is the ideal venue to inaugurate the city’s post-pandemic night life — created by Swedish photography museum @fotografiska and design-led private work and social space @neuehouse, the members-only bar and lounge combines a speakeasy discreteness with a meditative solemnity and a sense of community, sought after qualities in the aftermath of a major health crisis. Add in the cultural cachet of @fotografiska.ny next door, the sulky, jewel-toned interiors by acclaimed design practice @roman_and_williams_, artworks by celebrated British artist and photographer @milesaldridge (including highly stylized photographs from his ‘Immaculée’ series which reference Catholic depictions of female saints in ecstasy), and an eclectically curated menu of signature cocktails and rare spirits, and you get an idea of Chapel Bar’s unique, transcendental appeal.
