She awoke to a curious sensation at the back of her throat. A pressure was forcing its way up her gullet, pulsing rhythmically as though repeatedly swallowing in reverse. Her eyes flicked open, only to squint closed again having met the harsh green light that seared the base of her vision. An unnatural grogginess burdened her return to consciousness and the heaviness of her body drained her energy. In the glowing green blindness, the woman attempted to assess her situation.

At first she assumed she was choking, her gag reflex perhaps triggering in emergency; yet, she didn’t feel the acridness of asphyxiation in her chest. No, her breathing was unlabored but for the shock of awakening. To the contrary, as she took in the thin, metallic air of her surroundings, she was suddenly aware of how easily it entered her lungs, despite not registering any motion through her mouth or nose.

Her heartbeat rose ever so slightly, ever so sharply.

The pendulous weight of her chest rose and fell with increasingly shallow breath. Indeed, as her faculties returned to her she noted the weight of her body and the unpleasant ergonomics of her arms and legs. The pressure in her throat subsided briefly with a tingle, shrinking into nothingness between her collarbones. The brisk chill of a sudden draft across her back and breasts and she knew she was naked: at odds with the warm bed sheets she had retired to that evening. The woman motioned to dispel the goosebumps forming across her arms and bosom, as well as preserve her modesty in that uncertain environment.

Or she would have, were she able to move. The haze with which she awoke had all but faded by then, but the weight of her limbs was ominously unchanged. Immobilized, her heartbeat rose further while her muscles tensed and strained, confirming it was not a night terror or bout of sleep paralysis. In little time, she identified the supposed exhaustion beleaguering her arms and legs to be solid encasement.

Her supple body squeezed against her restraints as the pressure returned, this time more vigorously. Her heart raced in double time as she discerned the pulsation now dominating and distending her gullet to be unequivocally foreign.
The pressure built into a pounding, each cycle creeping closer to her uvula. She willed her eyes open, desperately looking as far upwards and away into the darkness for any sign or signal as to the nature of her predicament. As she craned her head backward though, the object compressing her insides shot forward, far past her uvula and into the chamber of her mouth. She felt herself gag truly as vomit erupted from her body, but the taste of bile was lost before it reached her tongue. The object, notably fleshy and organically rigid, burgeoned across her tongue in its place and she found in it an unexpectedly familiar flavor. It was pressing up against her teeth now, the length of its girth following from the root of her distorted neck all the way to the cusp of her lips. The taste was unmistakable, but before she could place it, her body was rocked with another round of gagging and the unidentified appendage burst through her newly agape mouth.

She saw it rise into the lower arc of her vision as the scene changed, spinning about until coming to rest on even more green lights. Tears had not yet begun to well in her eyes when the image resolved to reveal the silhouette of her familiar bust, side by side with her moistening ass. It was a brief moment before the connection was made between the green disks sectioning her body in half, the disk around the stump of her neck, and that hellish green glow sharing origins with the cock protruding from her lips.

There was no telling how long it would last, she knew. She considered her chances of fighting, of escape. Alas, it would be a grisly end if the power to the portals keeping her alive were to be cut. There was nothing to do but wait for her captor to finish.

Here is a list of items that you need to stay away from because they ignore the laws of physics along with space and time.

Leach Pad: IPad that, when used to take a selfie, devours your skin pigmentation, leaving you as an albino.

Dead Set: Head phones that allows you to hear the last thoughts of the dying. This has a side effect of relaxing your normal hearing with only being able to hear the thoughts of the dying.

Always Watched: A wrist watch that destroys your perception of time when worn for longer than an hour.

Always Awake: An alarm clock that when heard will always be heard even when turned off. So when you listen to an alarm one time, from that day forward you will hear an alarm at the exact time that you first heard it for the rest of your life.

Fan Tastic: Fan that creates portals directly behind the person who is touched by the wind blown by the fan. These portals are normally gateways to a labyrinth with no food and no escape. So don’t fall backwards into it.

Garage Hell Opener: A garage door opener that when used can cause someone you know who has died to come back from death and hunt you down and try to kill you. I have no idea what this has to do with garages.

Universal Charger: A charging cord that has a charging end for almost anything. When used it drains the nearest star in order to power your object. Thankfully this doesn’t drain our sun, but it does always destroy a star with every charge and put all that energy within the object.

Fear Bulb: A lightbulb that when put into a lamp, and then turned off but then turned back on while in the presence of the individual who turned off the light, creates whatever it is that the person is afraid of, within that room.

Keep an eye out and be safe everyone.

Portals to another world are a staple of fantasy world. Chronicles of Narnia; Stargate; Monsters, Inc.; and many others have portals to another world, all presented differently. I’ll go over some different types of portals and ways to deal with them.

Types of Portals

Portal to a parallel universe

Portals to parallel universes, like the quantum mirror in Stargate SG-1, transfer the character(s) from this world to a parallel one, one where there has been some divergence but where it is still fundamentally the same as where they came from.

There are basically two types of portals you can have for this. You can have a physical portal, like with the quantum mirror, or you can have a purely magic portal. I’ve seen one story where the portal is passive and worn and transfers the consciousness to the same body in another world when the person wearing it dies.

There are three main things to think about for this:

Is it two-way? You need to figure out whether or not it’s a one-way trip, and your character doesn’t need to know the answer to this when they go through the first one. If it is a two-way trip, there should probably be some symmetrical means to get back. It always reads weirdly when they come through by one means and come back by another. There has to be a really good reason for the characters to come back a different way than they came; the physical object only existing in one world is one of the only good reasons I can think of. That doesn’t mean that there can’t be a whole adventure to be able to go back home.

Where do they come out? You have a few options for this. They can come out in an arbitrary place, they can come out at some set magic nexus, they can come out wherever the physical object is on the other side, or they can come out in the same place (longitude/latitude). For each of these options, you need to think about why they come out where they do.

Do they replace alternate!them? Because they’re coming out in a world that they would theoretically exist in, think about whether they replace them or exist in addition to them. In Stargate SG-1, for example, there are times when they show up and there’s another of them there and there are times when other!them is dead and they never interact with them. Both of these have their issues—what happens when you meet yourself, how are you different from other!you, how do people keep from conflating you, etc.—and you need to figure out how to incorporate them into your story.

Portal to another planet

What I’m talking about here is where the characters and the reader know that they are on another planet in the same universe (and often the same galaxy) as where they came from. The classic example of this (and yes, I have a theme) is Stargate, where they use portals to travel to other planets. For this, one of the biggest things to think about is making the new planet(s) livable without making it/them Earth. Do the aliens look human? Are they even humanoid? How do they communicate with each other? How do they communicate with the protagonist?

Also, how did the portals get there? In Stargate, they were seeded through the galaxy, as were the humans, which is why there are humans on many of the planets with Stargates. If there are ones to multiple planets, you also need to think about dialing and identification systems, as well as whether or not characters have other means to get to these planets (i.e. space ships).

Portal to a magic/other world

This is the classic idea à la Narnia, where there is some way to get to another totally unrelated world that is neither on another planet not in a parallel universe. The common story with this is a character or characters on Earth being teleported to a world with magic and either being the “chosen one” or otherwise getting embroiled in political unrest or war while having to figure out their way around.

These worlds tend to look Narnia and/or Tolkein-esque, with foresty pseudo-European landscapes and cultures. As with all fantasy stories, that isn’t at all necessary. You can have them show up in desserts or tundras or marshes or floating cities or underground or literally wherever you want. It’s fantasy.

Another common thing is to have the world be magic with pseudo-European-medieval-except-without-the-gross-stuff levels of technology. You don’t need to go in that direction. You can have whatever type of magic you want with whatever level of technology you want, because these worlds don’t need to have the same historic path as the Earth.

Portal hub

Another option is that there is a hub of portals where a character can enter from any and go through to any other—or whatever other level of security or access you want—and it can end up as some sort of trade or culture hub.

Things to Think About

What is the portal? Whether or not the portal is a physical thing, there needs to be some idea of what the portal actually is. Traditionally it’s something that’s walked through, like a literal gate, but it can also be an object or a teleportation spell.

How does the portal work? Is it activated by touch? Is it activated by magic? Is there a ritual? Is there a specific time it needs to be turned on? Is there a specific place it needs to be? Is there a set of criteria to create it or make it work? Is there a specific length of time for which it can be turned on? Is passing through active or passive?

Who has access to it? This is true both in terms of physical access—who can physically get to it, who knows about it—and in terms of who can pass through magic-wise. There could be a class distinction or a location requirement, or maybe only a select number of people know about it (e.g. Narnia, Stargate).

Can inanimate objects be sent through? Can communication (e.g. radio or sound waves) be sent through?

What is the cost? This is tied into how it works, but also think about what physical objects may be needed, what physical toll opening it or passing through may cost, or what magic may be required.

Can it be opened from both sides? Is it possible to pull someone through to your side or even open up a portal and let people come through from another side without them opening it on their side?

Nah you didn’t fail to convey your opinion. I just misread it the first time(Might be doing it again too), then got carried away with explaining my theories. Okay, so let’s answer the question of “Why is this considered Alright?”

To me, I don’t consider it that way. I secretly cringe everytime I see a mage RPer create a portal for something as mundane as “I forgot my bag back at my apartment. One moment. Okay, it’s here now.”

It’s use in combat: I find it impractical and silly. Not to mention a little bit Overpowered. If a mage could do that so casually, why invent other spells? Fireball, Arcane Blast, Polymorph and the like? Spells specifically meant to be used in combat? Seem’s redundant if you ask me. So I agree with you there.

However, perhaps the reason people think that’s okay, is because many of them don’t quite know the lore behind portals and teleports, and just want to be like Doctor Strange  I mean… Flashy >.> … and want to believe their mage is Skilled enough to cast Teleportations and Portals instantly. “I’m a Master Conjurer! Also fuck authority! The Kirin’Tor is obviously corrupt!”(They aren’t. At least not anymore. Unless Blizzard decides otherwise again.) Which, yes, is pheasable. But if your mage really was a master conjurer, they’d know the damages portals cause to the fabric of reality XD

If I still missed the point of your post then I sincerely apologize. I am trying here. :P

In past RP’s, I’ve used both portals and blink in combat, but each with their own caveats:

1) Portals: cast time took 3 uninterrupted combat turns, and it took us to a city that is commonly ported to; it took reagents and drained my caster of most of her mana, after which she was left in a weakened state.

2) Blink: distance was short range; my caster could only use it twice in one combat experience; the only time she used it to save another person as well, she could only use it once, and it drained her of twice as much mana as normal.

At the end of the day, it’s about tempering abilities based on the skill of the characters. Overpowered abilities are cool, but they sap the fun and creativity out of small fights. Saving them for those Nat20 Critical kills is way cooler!

Just my 2 coppers’ worth.

~found some new portals in my souped film results ♡ living in these blobs til Spring

Hey guys! I just wanted to take a moment and post a small accumulation of all the lectures Emmy has done thus far. Bare in mind, that while I do deeply research every piece of lore that will be discussed in these topics, they are still widely head-cannoned, and are subject to change if Blizzard decides to expand on their lore regarding magic.

The reason being that Blizzard discusses pieces of lore, but then doesn’t bridge gaps in understanding between them. These lectures were widely designed as my way of doing so myself. So take from that what you will! In the meantime, enjoy!
